The fidelity of this record is great. I'm sure it is a heavily used store demo copy which explains all the scratches.

The real "first" 45s were laboratory test pieces, never issued to the public. THOSE would be top-level collector items.

IIRC, the 45 with catalog number 1 is Eddy Arnold's Cattle Call. It's hard to say what the "first" one was as there were a large variety released simultaneously when the format was launched.

RCA wanted to stress the seven basic kinds of music they offered on "45's"- and they did it via seven different colors, primarily for eye appeal.

I have the original 7 pack of colored records in an envelope given to me by a record manager in Wichita KS. I helped her move in 1967 and she gave me these. She and heads of record departments were invited in Feb. or March, 1949 to Chicago by RCA to introduce the first 45rpm record. The envelope is a little worn but the records have never been played. I might list on Ebay, but Ebay doesn't protect the seller any longer. Will see.

Played with a proper mono microgroove stylus and the information will sound even better! A stereo stylus is smaller and rides further into the groove and doesn't make full contact with the undulations on the walls. Regardless, Thank you for sharing!

@TC Fenstermaker shellac can sound incredible, but the equipment of the day often degraded them quickly. A good condition 78 played with proper stylus, cartridge, and eq can produce very good fidelity. Look up Chordettes Mr Sandman 78 rpm and prepare to be blown away.

Serge Francoeur Non. La face B est vierge! Pas de sillon, ni de "label"... De tels disques sont rares, car les compagnies prennent la peine de mettre du contenu en face B aussi, au pire le mettre identique au "A".

given the age, and mishandling of the recording, it would sound much better if it got a good cleaning. that is a "DEMO" used in stores that sold R.C.A. systems, this recording would have been made in march 1949 when the single 45 R.P.M. was released to the public.
