First AoE2 DE Commentary! DauT vs Hera!

This was my first bit of commentary on AoE2 DE Gameplay between DauT (Cumans) and Hera (Bulgarians)! I forgot to enable the high graphics for this actually, but it was a lot of fun and these new civs seem very interesting. We will continue to explore the new civs and game over the next few days on the KZbin and Twitch channel.

Minor DE nitpick: I'm not super keen on the spectator overlay. I liked seeing the tech progress in AOC, and pretty much everything the guys at Capture Age brought to the game. Fortunately, that means that there might be some room for them to improve on the new formula...

Agreed, Capture Age is a perfect overlay, easy to understand but this one ain't too bad either and as you said it can still be improved. The sad part is, if Aoe2 DE makes Original Aoe2 absolete, then what will happen to the poor capture age team? They worked hard on they're project but as things stand, DE is an improvement, one that has everything than Original Aoe2 has (except stuff that was made in time like mods and maps, unless Microsoft somehow made those things compatible to DE).

@@birisuandrei2866 DE is still built on the same engine as the original game, so depending on how the program is built, not all the work the Capture Age team done is lost, it might take them a while to adapt to the new system changes, but it could be pretty fast before a new version of Capture Age that works with DE is out.

@@beganfish that would be good, i know that DE is same engine, but usually when a game gets remastered some data gets deleted, some systems are swapped with better ones.

Is DE the same engine...? I would have thought they'd have to rip out half the engine to put any of these graphical effects in, and for sure they've revamped the MP protocol. I think it uses similar protocols for stuff like maps though. CA guys are in the dark but I reckon MS know they'll embiggen the competitive scene so I reckon they'll be happy to keep them onboard

Hera: Building Krepost T90: *"He is dropping Creep Post!"* Also, I like how the game looks and new civs, but a little bit concern if it would divide player base. Hell, there are literally THREE versions of the game at this point.

I agree krepost should be smaller. They're kinda between a tower and castle, so it makes sense for the scale of the graphic to be in between.

Logically that makes sense, but from a game mechanic perspective, it might make the seemingly already op Bulgarians, a tad bit more op

@@ShirotheWiseWolf Which game design perspective? Mine is that it's better to start it op and at least know it's interesting. Rather than preemptively nerfing and never finding the fun. It's a unique structure that adds variety. To your point about actual balance though, I feel like blocking off more map space makes it stronger. Aggressive drops deny space(usually at a resource location or chokepoint). Part of that is it's ability to physically block pathing, in addition to the range/damage around its location.

@@ShirotheWiseWolf if they were clearly lower than castle it would still look appropriately smaller without changing anything about the ground usage i think just making the massive rear tower of regular tower width would be enough to make it look appropriately

Hello from Athens, friend! Long time since I first subbed to you- it's 3 years and something now- but I always watch your videos. Well, this seems to be a really definitive edition, I'm hypped to get it as soon as I can. Unfortunately, my work prevents me from this... But I see that the dev team has done a good job and the new civs are very good. Steppe-themed, they seem, and variants of Slavs, I think. Not a bad idea, as there are variations of all the civ types, so as to have variety. As an analyst and good with numbers, I see that they have some work to do, in order to balance the new civs and discover antidotes to their advantages. But overall, it's a great game. Not a surprise though, as AOE 2 hides many of these, that's why it is the best game ever created- at least in my opinion, since I'm playing it for 20 years (started in 1999)...

I cannot wait for this! I played the crap out of AoE2 back during the MSN Zone days. I swear I had the fastest castle times around. :) I still play AoE regularly but I'm not good anymore. Hoping get back to form in this game.

I need to adjust my eyes and get used to this, I have a hard time seeing what's going on or identifying units, especially in fights. I hope it's just something I'll get used to, older AOE2 benefitted from very simple animations and unit models especially given the number of units.

i had no problem whatsoever identifying units from the beginning. i did have problems with some buildings from some civs though. i couldn't find where my enemy hid his siege workshop, and turns out his "markets" were siege workshops. but meh, i'll get used to that.

you need to go through 10 matches and then you got it. The only problem i have is that i dont knowe if or how you can zoom in the minimap. I hahve verry bad eyes ( 5% one the left and 25 on the right) and struggle with the colors and the pure tinyness of the mnimap, its funny to see me go panicmode whenever I have to figure out where the fck i get attaced^^. But just play 10 games and than you will be familiar with the units. Sry for my english, didnt write a comment in the last 4 years ;)

Map scrolling seems a bit jittery, to the point of being bothersome. Was that an issue with the recording software or comp specs? Considering getting the DE version but want to know how well it actually runs

Well AOE 1 DE has heaps of frame dips and stuttering even on high end specs, so don't get hopes up.

@@ScribblesOfOwls I suspect it's the color palette / contrast that does it. Units and buildings are simply a brighter color in standard AoE2, which makes everything stand out more. Additionally I suspect it's a sharpness/smoothness thing. The low-res nature of standards AoE2 actually helps it, since edges become sharper which again helps define foreground from background. DE2 is much higher res and therefore smoother, having the opposite effect.

ive seen this in a lot of games. compared to old sc, diablo2, quake live all the next version have these blurry graphics. I has smth to do with engine shared. I never played quake champions but watching streems the game feels so heavy in comparison.

12:53 I am actually kind of sad to see this go because I saw Viper used this for a masterpiece where he collected wood from a tree, then clicked stone, and kept doing that till he manages to cut through the tree for a sneak. It makes sense for gameplay reasons obviously, but no more of those masterpieces:(

9:00 When you said that they were mainly focusing on performance for a few months, that's typically how it goes in the games industry. Art/programming have a cutoff date for features months before full release in order to fix issues and optimise the game. Features only get added in during this time if they are small enough to be thoroughly tested in a short period. Even something as small as UI elements have the power to be game-breaking, which is why beta tests are only used to fix crashes/bugs, rather than bring in new features.

performance is great in this game for me, as long as i don't use the ultra HD assets, which are useless anyway (i don't zoom in EVER, always max zoom out). the only thing that bums me out is that it's still single-threaded.

I had a pet dove who I kept her cage in a window (it was a gift). One night a big crash shook the window and scared the hell outta me. I went outside to find a concussed owl on the ground trying to get up, he did eventually and flew off. The next day tho, there was a perfect owl silhouette on the glass made of very fine dust, with his little talons open lined up right at where the dove sleeps. it was pretty cool, that window glitched his ass big time.

@@tamaiantama the steam workshop won't be available because Microsoft wants everyone to get mods from the same places (such as modding sites), and that's because AoE2 DE will also be available on the Microsoft store which doesn't have a workshop system like steam does. But at the end of the day you will be able to mod it, there's a "mods" button on the main menu of the game, but it won't be as easy as clicking on a subscribe button anymore

I mean, HD was the first digital release for AoE2, and you could argue that it was worth it for that alone despite all the crappiness of HD. Just not having to bother with the CDs and stuff. And DE2 has completely revamped graphics, new civs, significant balance changes, lots of quality of life improvements, and you also get a reduced price if you already own HD. They're not being greedy with this I don't think. The only bad part of DE2 is that it could seriously fracture the player- and watcherbase.
