At least he's still on the Show. When The Young & The Restless debuted back in 1973, it focused on the Upper Middle Class Brooks & The Blue Collar Fosters. Then when The Bold & The Beautiful debuted in 1987 it focused on the Fabulously Wealthy Forrester Fashion Designer House and The Blue Collar Logans.

Yes, that's quite an achievement but let's not forget Bill Roache (Ken Barlow) Coronation St., 1960-to the present with the exception of One Year Off. In The US it was Don Hastings who played Dr. Bob Hughes on As The World Turns from 1960-2010. Yet The Actor who played Ian was very lucky that they didn't "Recast" him. On US Soil they have SORAS. (Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome). If there was A US Equivalent to Ian Beale it would be Frank Dicopoulos who played Frank Cooper on Guiding Light from 1987 until the show's Cancellation in 2009.

I loved the Back To Ours Specials. The smartest move that the Creators Of EastEnders did was that they never forgot to keep the Beales/Fowlers at the Center of The Show. A lot of Soaps forgot to do that. On The Young & The Restless it orginally focused on The Blue Collar Fosters and The Upper Middle Class Brooks Family now it focuses on The Abbotts & The Newmans.

because casting directors often try to cast actors with similar physical appearances and mannerisms who are playing related, adds to the realism. There are loads of examples-think the slater girls or in corrie with sarah lou and her daughter bethany or in emmerdale with trish and her mum steph stokes, emmerdale chas and cain, deirdre and blanch in corrie, miles and frasier on frasier, even daniella westbrook got cast for her round face similar to phil and grant -again phil and grant being an example....

Julia Smith, the producer, argued with the head of the wardrobe department, who had visited the East End to seek inspiration for the characters' clothes when the show was in preparation in 1984. The head of the wardrobe department had found that the real 1980s East Enders were wearing very flash, bright clothes - in fitting with the styles of the decade, but Julia wanted her characters to look grim. After she retired, she told the head of the wardrobe department that she (the wardrobe head) had been right about the clothes! Despite Julia saying that she wanted the show to be set 'uncompromisingly in the '80s' the real life outfits of East Enders were far too bright and expensive for the anti-Thatcher vision the show wanted to portray. It had an agenda. In 1987, several newspapers challenged the show's view of the East End. One published an article about residents of a real-life East End square - who were all financially and emotionally happier than the Queen Vic gang.

Close. Mark and Michelle are siblings and Ian is their cousin. When the character of Mark was recast (due to the tragic death of the original actor playing the role), the character also underwent a change.
