45 years ago, Peter and Reinhold made the first summit on Everest without supplement oxygen. What an amazing feat. Congratulations to them!

And we don't have to see comments about the poor Sherpas being used. They are too busy splitting the atom and building skyscrapers.

Not just wihout oxygen, but also without gear and clothes nowadays climbers have.

Sitting on top of the world with no oxygen! Very daring. So glad to read Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler have lead successful lives. Not knowing the Mountaineers, I like to go on to Wikipedia. I could hear the howling wind: brave men are to be admired. Thank you David Snow for sharing. Greetings from Texas.

This is real mountaineering and one of the greatest feats of mankind, This is real Everest. Nothing to do with the crowds of tourists that today saturate the summit. The Everest conquered by Messner and Habeler is simply another mountain, towering thousands of meters above today’s crowded summit.

That wind sound is the best ever. Reminds me of the harsh winters we had around Xmas every year. Our house sat in the middle of a bunch of open fields and the wind would rip though the attic vents making that howling sound. We had big comforters on our beds and would burrow under them in the dark with flashlights etc etc........ just being kids. Watching Clint Eastwood in The Eiger Sanction. Great times

Just to give you an idea what an climbing animal Peter Habeler is: He climbed the Eiger North at the age of 75. This is just insane.

Erhard Loretan and Jean Troillet did in 43h up and down in 1996. No oxy, no Sherpa, no fixed ropes, half a liter of water each and some cheese/bacon. Swiss style.

Is it down to good luck that these two didn’t develop high altitude sickness?
@NancyHanson3472 Жыл бұрын
Everyone's physiology is different. For some reason, unknown to me, some individuals are lucky and do not suffer from it as much as others do. The sherpas have a genetic predisposition to not be affected as much, because their ancestors have lived at high elevations for thousands of years, and it has been encoded in their genetic makeup.

So is it a myth when i hear that it takes months to climb a mountain like Everest because he did it in only 3 days ?
@Novaks_10 ай бұрын
It takes month’s because you have to acclimate at base camp and some of the higher camps. Id say if weather is good and the climber is strong and acclimatized; a climber could summit in around a week.
