You can really see how all the extra weight the GT-R was saddled with absolutely hobbled it over a race. Still, great memories, so thank you!
@markmark52696 жыл бұрын
It wasn't "saddled with", the rules were in place years before it was raced. They had a choice of configuration, Alfa, for example, went with 1.8 liters for their turbo because it put them in a lower weight class, but also skinnier tyes. Same for the M3 BMW, they stuck to 2.0 liters out of all their models as they believed it to be the right combo..

@@markmark5269 It actually was "saddled with" extra weight for the 1992 season we see here. The GTRs were required to carry an extra 140kg for 1992, bringing them up to 1500kg, which was considerably more than the originally mandated 1260kg they debuted with in 1990. They also had their horsepower restricted to 470hp by the use of a (supposedly) tamper-proof valve on the inlet manifold, although it's now widely known that Gibson Motorsport eventually got around this by altering the settings of the power output rig in order to fool CAMS. Considering the Sierras were easily producing 550-600bhp and carrying less weight it's not surprising Fred Gibson and his team worked hard to restore their lost horsepower. Other vehicles in the category were subject to alterations for 1992 as well, the Commodores and the Sierras were restricted to 7500rpm (which didn't slow the Sierras at all, they just changed the curve on the turbo to deliver max boost at lower rpm, and the Commodores were flat out revving much more than 7500 anyway). The BMWs were required to carry an extra 50kg. But without doubt the extra 140kg AND power reduction imposed on the GTRs was definitely the biggest change in the rules. To say the GTRs weren't "saddled with" extra weight isn't true at all. It's a testament to both the cars and Gibson Motorsport's development that they continued to be competitive despite the huge restrictions placed on them.

@@markmark5269 Please don't spread fake history! They were "saddled with" extra weight and also huge boost (power) restriction because they were previously too fast. Nissan built the ultimate Group A touring car within the regulations but were a victim of their own success.

@@brucerobertson5919 4 wheel drive. They should have won every single race with the way they were able to take off. It was a good attempt at BOP by the ATCC. The Nissan was competing against cars that were abandoned by Ford. I believe production of the Sierra stopped in '92, but in reality, Ford was done developing this car by the mid 80's. So yeah, Nissan had to be saddled, as their counterparts were dinosaurs! Ford abandoned Australia, the sedan market. Whenever they get a good thing going, they didn't know what to do with it! as soon as there's a blip on the radar, kill it!

@@xr500t Thanks for your thoughts. Ford built all of the Sierras in 1986 (2 door models) and were certainly involved in developing them as race cars for a few years after that. Because there was demand from the motorsport customers they did also remanufacture some slightly altered bare 2 door shells in the early 90s. It was about the time of the release of the Sierra RS Cosworth that Nissan were well into the thick of the R32 GTR development, so they could release it in 1989. The Sierra was still very much not a dinosaur, but for sure it was technology from a generation ago. Ford decided not to respond, preferring to support rule changes to allow them to stay in even earlier 1970's level technology with the V8 supercars. Ford is a strange company (I used to be a Ford engineer). Too big and don't seem to have a heart about them. I was in Detroit a couple years ago and visited Henry Fords famous house at Fair Lane - he was passionate about that house and site. It was pretty much abandoned and in a state of disrepair, although some restoration was being done very slowly. It amazed me that it wasn't a celebrated shrine of the company and family history. I got a real buzz being there as I sat alone in his garden where the great man would have sat, but a multi billion dollar company doesn't care about it's roots and history it seems. That sums Ford up to me. That's why companies like Tesla will eat them for lunch.

The season when they had to hobble the R32 GTR's with low boost and over a hundred kilo's of sand bags in the boot to slow it down so Ford and Holden had a chance. Jim Richards stated he wouldnt drive it anymore (the GTR) if they added anymore weight as it was becoming dangerous with the back end trying to come around in corners....that was the reason the GTRs were slower in the corners and having to brake early.

They weighted the Mustang in 2019 to help the commodore. The Sierras also had 80kg added weight by 1992 even though they were 6 years old with bicycle tyres & saucers for brake discs! The rules in Australia have always favoured Holden since the beginning of time.

@@scordatura9259 Not necessarily, the GTR and Supra,s etc were Japan,s entry into the muscle car to compete with Mustangs Camaros etc, ATCC changes were going on from the Group C to Group A ( the Group C were sometimes called the 'big bangers', Group A was more of a hotted up road car with a roll cage etc ) there was some confusion as to exactly what was going to be the future hence between 85--87 Dick Johnson ran the Mustang to fill the gap, end of 92 decision was turbos were banned ALL would race 5ltr V8,s. The GTR got some factory backing and good bits, to compete with the Sierra which in 92 were up 650hp but only RWD hence they had trouble putting power down. This was brilliant racing, classes set out to offer best performance across the board, small power lightweight cars with narrow tyres, against medium power medium weight cars with medium width tyres, against big power heavyweight cars with wide tyres. It worked because each class had it's advantages for different types of tracks and situations. Today's clowns have made them all the same, and we get no passing, fookwits.
