In defense of the US, the IJF were quite insistent on doing things THEIR way. The Americans made some (and some not) very sound and reasonable suggestions for how the defense of the mainland should go, but the Japanese didn't exactly want to go with those pragmatic choices. It was understandable from both sides. So when the Americans had bigger fish to fry and decided they couldn't realistically keep helping such a difficult and uncooperative ally, they cut their losses -- dirtied their hands, weren't afraid to choose what they could keep. That still isn't going to make the Japanese like them, so obviously you'd get a rising nationalist, extremist faction that chooses what they want to keep and let go, and how they want to dirty their hands as well. All in all, it's more like a bad breakup than it is a "USA -- bad, Japan -- Yamato Damashii!" type of story

@yamamotomechbattles Жыл бұрын
@@lenonoone4310 Hey no problem. It's a bit of a spoiler revealed at the end of Alternative... The BETA are autonomous mining drones created by an unknown synthetic alien species. They spread into a solar system and land on planets, harvesting everything on that planet and shooting them up into the stars back to their point of origin (the Hive monuments have been observed to be routinely releasing unknown objects into orbit, which disappear into space). Basically, when left on autopilot mode, the BETA use predictable swarm tactics and harvest resources to be processed while neutralizing any hazards that prevent them from doing so. Because both the BETA and humans are carbon-based life, and the BETA were created by others, they don't see humans as "alive" because ironically they practically view synthetic life as alive while carbon-based is artificial. When controlled by their "central computer", i.e. a being in the Original Hive known as the Superior, they are capable of tactics like diversions, ambushes, using reserves, counterintelligence, and developing strategies to outsmart humanity's tried and true tactics. They could've destroyed Tokyo at any time, but instead they created a Hive right next to it and some theorize that the BETA allowed humanity to capture it.

But the Sadogashima battle in the VN, that takes place after most of Total Eclipse...and by the end, both stories conclude at the same time.

By '98, you would have thought Army doctrine would have changed for rifleman gear. At the very least, a battlerifle caliber (308 or 30-06) with m203 (or equivalent attachments) with each squad packing atleast 2 or more Carl Gustofs. Inf. Should never operate without soft armor capabilities. Inf. Should be tasked as a QRF only come to think of it.
@yamamotomechbattles Жыл бұрын
Yeah riflemen are really only good at deterring human threats. In the short story War Ensemble (which hasn't been translated, so I haven't read), I believe it follows a unit of mechanized infantry who use the feedback protector power suits. So we know the Japanese were fielding those during 1998. Maybe light infantry as we know it essentially became the mech. infantry, while the light infantry we see in the story are more like MPs and security forces. If that were the case, then the soldiers on Sadogashima were likely just being forced to fight in a role they were simply never meant for due to the lack of proper troops. Or perhaps the IJA poured all their money elsewhere (domestic TSF development) instead of equipping them, which some militaries have absolutely done.

Great video as always. This battle, the first episode of the anime, was my introduction into the Muv Luv universe. It was a beautiful work of subverting my expectations (is that the correct way to say it? English is not my first language). I do have two questions, one about the lore and another about the making of these videos. If the UN, not the US, send help to Sadogashima, how would that impact the way Japanese people view the UN? Because as far as I know, they consider the UN as an American puppet. Are you getting information about these battles just from VN's, anime and the Wiki, or do you have another source? Once again, thanks for the content.
@yamamotomechbattles Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Subverting expectations is like making you think something is going to happen, and then making it happen in a way you didn't fully expect. Muv Luv is very good at that. If the UN were there I think it would've made more of a difference, especially in how the Japanese see the UN (many of whom in the 11th Force are Japanese too). They were said to have helped during the Fall of Kyoto, but even then, that battle had mostly Imperial Japanese forces fighting on the ground. As far as I know, before 1999, the UN didn't really have a huge presence in Japan, whose people didn't really rely on them as they didn't think too much about the war reaching their shores. But Operation Lucifer and the US actions were followed by Youko's proposal to build Yokohama Base for the UN, which made it look like the UN was doing the dirty work of hoarding G-Elements for the US. But overall, I don't think they had as strong a presence there during 1998. As for lore, I use the main VNs if they are translated, and the same goes for the short stories like Marimo's and Isumi's. I use the anime adaptations where I can as well; I know most of those are hated on but I actually enjoy them for what they are. On top of that, I use the wiki and some translations of TSF Cross Operations that I've found online. I found several Light Novel side stories of Schwarzesmarken just by looking hard enough. And then there's the Muv-Luv Alternative Codex, which has been translated to English -- I have yet to finish reading it start to finish, but there is a ton of lore within, along with some interviews with Kouki Yoshimune himself.

Yeah the laser tech is still in the works and is later used to great effect, but logistics demands has forced humans to just keep churning out massive amounts of standardized weaponry rather than mass producing specialized innovations. The nukes have been used in some battles, as well as a nearly tactical nuke equivalent (equipped as a self-deletion option in some ops). Overall though, most of the nations oppose nukes and WMDs because they fear irradiating their countries which they hope to recapture. It's a bleak thing to hope for.

The interesting part is they clearly thought they could still win with relative ease despite everything happening on the mainland. Think about it, there is literally no defensive depth on the island, their civilians were sheltering basically in the middle of a defensive fortification which means they believed said fortifications would not fall. Perhaps they assumed the Americans would be the definitive factor in holding the island, it would fit with the Imperial Japanese militaries tendency to only plan for the best case scenario. The weird thing is one the scale of the threat became apparent they didn’t initiate an evacuation despite having the means to do so and the shelters just ended up being a convenience for the beta.
@yamamotomechbattles Жыл бұрын
Yeah at some point they started pulling civilians out, but it was clearly not soon enough. As far as the episode goes, the Sado Island civilians were symbolic of that old debate between Takeru and Meiya at the volcano, but practically, I think they all thought Sado, their home, was a final refuge while it was the Mainland that was doomed to fall. In the end, whoever survived either had to become new soldiers or were just more mouths to feed...refugees in this world seem to be tolerated first, cared for second due to strained economies. I think they just had no other options than a lose-lose situation, and the dialogue in the episode stated it: "The government isn't showing us the way forward" or something like that, so they just stood and fought and hoped the Americans would pool in with them. Perhaps they hoped the fight really would just be a sideshow and they'd get off easy.

Excelente video!!!

Thanks! It's okay, my phone can translate haha Yeah, the US could've at least launched a few sorties and moved close enough for naval artillery support. It wouldn't have put them at too much risk. The politicians were eager to leave, but I honestly believe the troops on the ground would've wanted to help. For example, the Jolly Rogers fought in Kyoto to the very final stages, only retreating and handing the baton to Ikaruga after they ran out of ammo ("This is all we have left, good luck"). Of course, historically, I somewhat liken it to the US withdrawals from Vietnam or Afghanistan -- the local military is getting destroyed and the US focuses on leaving. Sadogashima is definitely being worked on. I'm divided on if I'll do Op Lucifer because there's some lore, but not enough to know everyone there and where they were. I've also seen an unvoiced short with Takayuki as MC, but I don't know anything about it.

@yamamotomechbattles Жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you're getting something out of this crazy concept I had lol The BETA don't need to breathe, and thus can survive in space and underwater. They can only survive in the ocean to a certain depth though, any deeper and they don't go because of the pressure. I can't recall the exact limit, but it's very deep, like the midpoint of the Pacific Ocean. Smaller ones need the Fort-Class to transport them under all bodies of water as well. Otherwise, entire herds of BETA can sometimes remain dormant underwater for indefinite periods of time along the Eurasian coastline...when they do it's usually a sign they're about to invade.

I love it. It shows human nature, otherwise the story would be too black and white. Some people in Muv Luv are so arrogant they are already planning for "after we win the war" even though they aren't winning. There will essentially be a huge attempt by various polities at grabbing BETA resources once they've been defeated...much like how ww1 and ww2 saw the winners dividing up territory and resources in ways that would only spark future wars. It's a good commentary about how war is truly waged by our politicians.

I just realized something, where were the orbital divers during this. I feel like the evacuation could've been a lot smoother if they joined the battle. Or maybe even, they could've held out long enough for backup for mainland to come. For an elite unit, the orbital divers are probably one of the most unused units in the muv-luv verse.
@yamamotomechbattles Жыл бұрын
I believe that's because their primary use is for hive infiltration ops, so they're not a defensive force. The key behind their doctrine is in drawing massive amounts of BETA from a hive via normal ground forces, and then sending in a new and elite force from the only other angle the hive can be attacked from...above. It takes a LOT of preplanning and logistics to schedule a drop, as the Sadogashima Hive op took a monumental effort to get all the HSSTs into orbit and in position on time. So they aren't good as a QRF unless someone allocated their resources into being one, but that would also go against what those resources are intended for to begin with. They would make good force multipliers though if embedded with ground troops, like Ellen Aice for example

@@yamamotomechbattles It's a real shame that none of the nations didn't consider investing a lot more in orbital divers especially the US. They could have been amazing quick reaction forces. Imagine seeing dozens of drop pods in the skies during the invasion of Japan. Would've been a good way for Orbital divers to utilize their skills.
@lolroflroflcakes Жыл бұрын
They wouldn’t actually be an effective reserve or quick reaction force because they have limited numbers, do not include supplies, a way to actually get out of the situation and they aren’t that fast. Even if they just happened to be in the correct orbit at the right location to drop on a beleaguered friendly they are either going to roflstomp and it’s ludicrous expenditure of resources for what is essentially a dramatic entrance or you are just trapping more people in a bad situation because again, limits numbers, no supplies and no way out. That said dropping them on their own into a hive doesn’t really seem effective either because ultimately they will be cut off and surrounded unless you immediately follow up. Honestly they seem like they would be best employed not in capturing a hive but instead by securing specific tunnel entrances or securing the ground around the monument for the deployment of a bunker busting nuke. Lasers can’t shoot down the nuke if it’s carried in by the reinforcing army.

Consider the fact that Japan at this point has 3 separate command structures (IJA, MDF, and Imperial guard), 3 different doctrines, and three different mainstay TSFs (Type 77 for MDF, Type 89 and Type 94 for IJA, and Type 82/pre-production type 00 aka type 98 for the Imperial guard) it not a wonder that they can't agree on anything with the US. They can't even agree amongst themselves (with Imperial guards agreeing more to American suggestions while MDF opposing. You have to wonder how the MDF, an organization with 0 experience fighting BETA at this point, gets to decide the defensive strategy of Japan).

12:46 there is a Taktikal mistake in not exfiltrateing first east to turn north after passing the static defence so the line of fire is not blocked (and the fort class could not have ambushed B Sqadron this way)

Bear in mind I'm new to Muv-Luv (I found this just yesterday) but I'm also a sucker on anything military. So I have a few questions: 1. Why didn't the IJF not deploy more underwater detection devices after the BETA took control of Korea? Its pretty much stupid to not do that. 2. Why did the IJF not deploy more mines on the waters outside the island's coastal areas? (i.e. beyond the shallow waters) 3. Why didn't the IJF not evacuate the civilian population when the breach happened? Or better yet, why didn't they just evacuated the population by force when the BETA was reported or smth? Civilian casualties could have been avoided if they pulled out the civilians out of the island. 4. Why did the US decided not to help Japan? Although I can understand Japan's reluctance to rely on US help, but Japan is a strategic location for any potential UN liberation of East Asia as well as another line of defense for the US to prevent the BETA from reaching North America. 5. Why didn't Alpha not retreat from the second line after it was over-runned? The line has already fallen so defending an already fallen line would just be next to useless. 6. Why haven't the IJF not consolidated its remain forces at the third line after the second fell? Pretty much the IJF are scattered after the second fell. So it isn't unplausible to consolidate the remaining defenders to the Third for a much more organized defense. 7. Why did the IJF not fortify and reinforce their coastal lines after the fall of Korea? These are just questions that popped off my head. I may lack on knowledge of Muv-Luv but I do know a lot on anything related to the military.

US decition not to join was a bad one. Their firepower alone could have achieved alot. Even if they would not land their troops on Sadogashima. but the biggest problem with the decition not to join was simple - it breeds resentment, and once resentment is taking hold , you cant get rid of it.

@@murasame5071 yes a small US Carrier fleet that housed the VF103 jolly Rogers was in Japan and even helped during the evacuation of Kyoto but majority of the the entire US pacific fleet and its ground forces has been redirected to the other side of the world for a much more important objective And I'm sure there are also many US artillery, MLRS etc at Japan during the BETA invasion and I'm sure they weren't enough to stop the BETA invasion It's pretty much just shit timing if the US forces hadn't been redirected, both US and Japan would probably have flushed the BETA out of japan
