What I love the most about the final scene is that Colonel Trautman had been bragging about Rambo for the whole film, speaking proudly about how he had transformed him into a war machine. Then he was forced to confront the fact that he never turned him back into a civilian, and everything he previously felt pride over he is now ashamed of.

I never thought about that. It’s very sad because these veterans go through hell and are supposed to just come home and go back to a “normal” life. They don’t get the help they need to acclimate themselves back into the world.

@@cflournoy1529 It's better now than it used to be, but I still think that rather than throwing free taxpayer money at illegal immigrants the government should invest that money into veteran-run businesses.

First Blood is an excellent post-Vietnam war soldier's trauma story. The later Rambo movies are ridiculous, but pure fun action movies. Stallone was trying to tell a very important story in this one.

It’s hard to believe that the press always said he couldn’t act because the way he talks. But he is a great actor who brought to life Rocky and Rambo two of the best franchises in history. He’s one of my favourites. My dad and all of his WW2 buddies lived through what John did . They all had some level of PTSD. And the Vietnam vets got the worst of it. A large part of the homeless men after that war were veterens who couldn’t cope. We failed them. Every time I see a war movie I think of my father going silent, having a whiskey and lost in a recurring nightmare that never ends. When you see the greatest man you know experience this it breaks your heart. Wars are never really over. For some it never ends.

Wow. My dad was USMC during Viet Nam. If you startled him napping...wow. My dad eventually self medicated himself off this Earth. I appreciate the first Rambo movie a lot. I don't think I really got it when I saw it in my teens on VHS. I love the fact that Rocky isn't about boxing too. Tulsa King is a brand new series, and he plays his 75 year old self as a gangster in Tulsa. Copland is also a great Stallone film. He can act....no doubt about it.

At my Legion Branch 12, the oldest one in Windsor there is a memorial just outside where our Colour Guard would have a ceremony each year. Downtown at the river there is a Special Memorial where our Vietnam Vets could come for their special ceremonies. At every meeting we pledge our allegiance to the Queen and to our Country. They had two things we said at every meeting. Lest we forget and We will remember them. Just to remind people that this is no joking matter. It’s not Arnold Swartzeneger. The movie was originally named "First Blood," adapted from a novel. After Rambo became a movie franchise, a marketing decision was made to rename it "Rambo: First Blood" so people who hadn't seen the original would know it was a Rambo movie.

Sylvester Stallone himself said that this was his best acting and I agree, this movie has such an action movie beginning and an ending with an awesome emotional punch. Everybody I know that watches this movie feels the emotions of that ending and feels like they understand the war veterans struggle a bit more. It is a brilliantly made movie with so many great acting performances from both Stallone the protagonist and Brian Dennehy the antagonist along with Richard Crenna as Colonel Troutman and other great supporting performances that kept the immersion going so well. Also the music created a sense of suspense that went with the pace of the editing and helped feed the audience's need for vengeance until that great ending that finally delivered the reality of a damaged man that has been turned into a weapon and can't find a way back to being a normal family guy.

I grew up in this era. The Post Traumatic Stress these men carried with them was intense but usually would take some butt head like the Sheriff and his men to know they were affected, otherwise they stayed to themselves, no longer trusting society, no longer wanting to live the pipe dream of owning a house so you can load it up with stuff and more stuff. They just wanted to be free.

You guys are great at reacting to movies, love your comments and observations. The big problem they found out from Vietnam is that it was the first time when solders went from the battlefield one day to the next day being home. They had no down time to deal with what they went through. In previous wars they would come home by ship, and it usually took several weeks to months to get home. The whole series is fun to watch with some being bloodier. You still would probably like them.

I saw this in a theater when I was 16. It was very impressive on the big screen. Also, that year in my city, a Vietnam Veteran took a 7-11 store hostage and subsequently went outside and started shooting at the cops who killed him. HIs gun had blanks in it, and he didn't hurt anyone in the store. He just wanted to die.

Gault died because, against health and safety policy I'm sure, he removed his seatbelt in order to get a better shot. Gault killed himself. Rambo killed no-one in this film. In the book though he was a mass killer and Trautman kills him in the end. The difference between the book and the film illustrates the different perceptions of Vietnam vets between 1972 (when the book was published) and 1982. Kirk Douglas was first cast as Trautman but, when he heard they changed the ending, he pulled out leading to a last minute replacement in Richard Crenna. Back in a time when almost all movies required a ton of light to expose the film, Andrew Laszlo was given the task of lighting the scene where we first see that Rambo is alive in the cave. He took two matches and stuck them together. That whole cave scene is lit by what are called in the industry 'practicals' - the flames on screen in this case. You have to keep the flame close (but not too close!) to the subject and the environment to make this work. A cave is an ideal environment for practicals. Could go on for hours. One of my most watched/studied films. Want to know how to make an engaging action movie? Behold First Blood. Genius.

U guys are spot on. Vietnam vets weren't treated well when they got home. Many of them couldn't get any jobs despite their whatever qualifications, skills etc, as many businesses didn't want to hire them bcoz their involvement in the war. Government didn't do much to help them too. These along with the severe PTSD led them into the streets broke, with nothing but alcohol, drugs etc to cope with their psychological issues. If I'm not mistaken PTSD wasn't really a widely understood psychological illness during that time. Some decided to eventually just suicide themselves. It's just sad seeing Rambo's breakdown in the end (he was conscripted into the Army, like many other Vietnam vets right after completing high school).

The deepest part of this movie is how much it changed men. Just imagine being drafted and like most decent people you where brought up to be a good man. To be a family man. You had a moral compass you always just had that support. Then a man screams spit in your face and tells you all that you know is bulls*it because out here it's you or them. You either go insane by this or you adapt. If you adapt you get "used" to hearing graphic stories at dinner of a guy getting blown up talking about it as casually as the weather. You get used to losing your friends in combat. You start to make bets on how long the new guy in your platoon will last. You learn how to effectively use weapons to hurt and kill the enemy. You get used to raunchy jokes that once bothered you and eating in dirty places and wherever you could. The blood of war becomes as common as water. Then you are told to leave it all behind and go home. To go back to being a family man who always hated guns and promised to never hurt your fellow man. Your not the same man anymore. You wanted no part in it and just wanted a "thank you" at the very least. But you won't get it. The general public sees you as monsters. No body will hire you. Your family is horrified at your swearing and new outlook on life. Your buddies can't understand why you just can't get out of bed today to go hunting after a nightmare flashback. Some wives found the new husband returning not to thier liking. And people abandoned them. Many felt thier brothers in arms was all they had. This masterpiece shows those struggles. He will never again be just "some guy walking down the street." He will always be called "trouble" even before this movies story even began.

@@ThisLoveIsSweet I don't know if you have been to the American South (Georgia to East Texas), but in the south, veterans are treated well, you see the American flag everywhere and patriotism is part of everyday life. Case in point, in 1983 I transitioned from active Marine Corps to the Marine Corps Reserve. This was in New Mexico. I started putting in job applications, everywhere-McDonald's, Burger King, small restaurants, security guard agencies. Over 200 job applications in one month's time. I only had 3 interviews. Finally, the Marriott Hotel followed federal law and hired me. All those other places were hating on me because I was a veteran. After two years in the reserve I moved to Texas and went to college. Finding a job was easy. People seeing my military record thanked me for my service and a few places actually gave me discounts (and they still do).

I'm glad they changed the ending. Rambo become an icon for veterans everywhere. The original ending had Rambo take Trautman's side arm and shoot himself. Would have been way too bleak an ending I think. Rambo, the veterans, needed hope. Some will say that Rambo 2 and 3 miss the point of the first film, which might be somewhat true of Rambo 3, but Rambo 2 continues some of the themes from the first film in terms of our veterans and how they are often forgotten and discarded, and that wars don't just end with everything nice and tidy, there's left overs and clean up for years. For example, to this day, there are still mines in Vietnam from both the French expeditions in the 1950s and the Vietnam war of the 1960s and 70s. We send young men to do some of t he most terrible jobs imaginable, and when they come home they seldom get more than the bare minimum.

Anti-vagrancy laws _were_ a thing in the US at the time the film was set in. Then, during the 80s, such laws were deemed by the Supreme Court to be unconstitutionally vague, serving effectively as a blank check to arrest on a whim. A deleted scene shows that Teasle was also a war veteran, like his book counterpart. Teasle fought in the Korean War, also known as the "Forgotten War" due to its minimal coverage by US media outlets. Teasle had earned several accolades, but _not_ the Medal of Honor, making him largely motivated by envy of Rambo - a veteran of the highly controversial Vietnam War. This is gone more into depth in the book. Out of all the villains in the Rambo films, Teasle stands out because he was far more complex in his motives compared to later villains, often leaving fans wondering if he'd return in a later film with a wiser outlook on life and a cooler head. Sadly, Brian Dennehy passed away in 2020, completely killing off any chance of this happening.

John was not trained to injured or delay an enemy. He was trained to kill the enemy. The only person who died was the sadistic deputy. He was leaning way out of the window if the helicopter taking potshots at John. John threw a stone at the front window if the helicopter probably hoping the pilot would go back to the airport. The pilot unnecessarily jerked the yoke when he was in no danger. When he did, the helicopter tipped and the sadistic deputy fell because he could not keep his butt in the seat and the seatbelt on his lap. John could not have foreseen that. As for everybody else he encountered, he could have killed but did not.

This movie came out when PTSD was still a controversial diagnosis (PTSD was recognized by US doctors only in 1980), so Rambo wouldn't have had access to the same kind of psychiatric care available to US veterans today.

This film is brilliant.. I'm not a fan of the others to be honest.. this is so moving the others don't come close to it. The acting at end from stallone was 4 minutes of the best acting I ever seen.. should have got a Oscar for that on it own..

This was how modern day vets were treated- and I saw modern because we still have living Vietnam vets not being treated well- it makes me questions soldiers and warriors of old. Yes some were respected or given land but how many were treated like Rambo. Then the matter of PTSD and therapy/depression medicines/mental health is only recent. Therapy should’ve been existing long long ago.

Stallone has always said Rambo saved his career. He said everything else he tried to do up into this point besides Rocky was a failure & he begun to think all he ever would be known for was the Rocky movies.

most modern folks are kinda confused by the "flag on the jacket" comment by the sheriff because it's a very "of the time" reference to some political drama involving something called the "Flag Code" which were rules about using the flag outside of official circumstances and some Anti-Vietnam/Anti-War activists displaying the flag as a form of protest. The sheriff was implying that Rambo was a hippie and possibly transient draft-dodger and thus not the "kind" of person he wanted around.

Good History Movies - *Tora Tora Tora ( written from the perspective of the Americans and the Japanese) *Paton is an excellent movie of WW2 *Sergeant York (amazing true story of a backwoodsman who becomes a great hero) *The Pianist - amazing true story of a pianist surviving the Nazis *Braveheart - heart breaking but also uplifting war of Scots and English and the Irish *Lawrence of Arabia - very long dramatic tale of an Englishman who fought the Turks with impossible circumstances *The Crossing - great movie about George Washington

Minor correction, it is Patton - with two Ts, just an FYI. Great Oscar winning movie btw. Other good history/historical movies... *The Patriot (about the American Revolution & it's effects on a family drawn into it) *Amazing Grace (about the United Kingdom/Britain abolishing slavery) *Gettysburg (about the civil war battle - very historically accurate) *Gods And Generals (prequel to Gettysburg) *Glory (about the first all African American union civil war regiment) The Alamo (there are two versions, the 1960 film with John Wayne & the 2004 film, that is more historically accurate). *Amistad (about the slave revolt that happened near American shores in 1839) Edison, the Man (biopic about the life of Thomas Edison, played by Spencer Tracy, who invented the 1st electric light bulb, among many other things) *Chaplin (a biopic about the life of Charlie Chaplin, played to perfection by Robert Downey Jr, and his lasting impact on motion pictures/filmmaking) *Titanic (Oscar winning film about the famous sinking ship - very historically accurate) *Flyboys (about the first allied air force in WWI) *All Quiet On The Western Front (any version, they are all good, about disillusioned German soldiers facing the horrors of trench warfare in WWI) Yankee Doodle Dandy (a biopic about playwrite/Broadway producer George M. Cohan, played by James Cagney, known as the king of Broadway) *The Great Escape (about WWII allied prisoners daring & ingenious escape from the toughest German prison camp - based on actual events) *Life Is Beautiful (a film set in the concentration camps during WWII, where a Jewish father tries to protect his 4 year old son from the horrors of the holocaust). *A League Of Their Own (inspired by actual events and real people of the all women MLB baseball team during WWII) *The Tuskegee Airmen (true events about the first all African American air fighter squadron in WWII) *Tucker: The Man And His Dream (biopic about Preston Tucker, played by the great Jeff Bridges, and his attempt to produce & market the 1948 Tucker Sedan, which was met with scandal between the "Big Three automobile manufacturers" and false accusations of stock fraud from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) *Glory Road (the true story about the first all African American basketball team). *Apollo 13 (about the actual NASA doomed Apollo space mission that almost went terribly wrong, Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Keven Bacon, Kathleen Quinlan, Gary Sinise & Ed Harris were all great in it) *We Were Soldiers (about the very first US battle of Vietnam and its effects on the families back home) *Elvis (Biopic about the life of Elvis Presley, play to perfection by Kurt Russell...the recent film isn't too bad either). *Miracle (based on actual events of the historic Olympic win of the 1980s USA hockey team) *Three Kings (a fun romp about a group of soldiers stuck in Iraq during the first Gulf War) *Untied 93 (the true story of the passengers who fought back against the terrorists who hijacked the airplane and brought it down on 9/11) *World Trade Center (the true story of two NYFD firefighters who rushed in to save people that became trapped under the rubble of the WTC and how they survived on 9/11)
