I once saw an interview with Morrell, where he talked about the contract negotiation for the film rights. Going over the deal with him his lawyer tells him "and this clause gives you a percentage of any sequels they may make." "Sequels?" asks Morrell, "How can there be sequels? He dies at the end!" Stallone in the Blu-Ray extras talked about a key reason they changed the ending was because of the problem of veteran suicide and how he didn't want the movie to be saying that veterans should kill themselves. Given that suicide takes the lives of more veterans than combat does this was a very valid thing to worry about. Great video as always Dom

And, David Morrell did write novelizations of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III which, oddly enough followed after the book. How can this be, you may ask? If I remember correctly, the foreword for the novelization of Rambo: First Blood Part II was basically "So, I know Rambo died and the end of the first book, but these guys threw a big bag of money on my desk to get me write this thing, so just pretend that whole 'dying' thing never happened, Okay? Okay. Good. Enjoy the story."

To help clarify your confusion on the structure of American law enforcement, police have jurisdiction in a certain city, sheriffs and their deputies have jurisdiction in a given county, state troopers have jurisdictions in a given state, and marshals have jurisdiction across the entire country. Some local laws extend the jurisdiction of these different departments. For example, in Georgia sheriffs and their deputies can enforce the law throughout the entire state just like state troopers.

Just to get more confusing, there used (and maybe still are in some places) TOWN/CITY marshals who were pretty much the same as the town/city police chief. Again, it probably made sense for the movie to make Teezel the sheriff since most of the pursuit was out of town.

Also to clarify a little further: Police chiefs are appointed by the mayor from a group of police veterans who are eligible after a intense screening process. Sheriffs are actually voted officials by the people of the country, and must have served as a deputy for 5 years. Also, according to American law, a sheriff is actually the highest level of law enforcement a citizen should ever have to deal with. If you are arrested by police, you can request to be seen by your local sheriff, or one of his representatives and negotiate with them. If you're a local in a smaller county, this is preferable over dealing with police bureaucracy.

To further confuse - In medium to large population counties , it is common to also have a County Police Department in addition to a Sheriff's Department . It's a matter of political power and money . The County Council ( or whatever local form ) doesn't want to have money or potentially high profile decisions not under their control . In such situations , the Police Department will handle essentially all the criminal investigations , routine patrol , etc , and Sheriff will only handle the duties explicitly named In the respective state constitution . Typically Courthouse security , serving Civil Court Orders , running County Jail . transporting prisoners and handling extraditions . In some large counties , goes even further , with a seperate County Department of Corrections to run the Jail and any other correctional facilities . * At the local level , Town Marshall is essentially an archaic title for a Chief of Police . ( The U.S. Marshals Service is a different thing entirely .) Constable has disappeared from most of the US , but in certain areas of a handful of states still exist , and in some of those actually still do some " Regular Law Enforcement " . Notably in certain areas of Pennsylvania , Kentucky , and Texas .

It's ironic that he doesn't seem to know what a sheriff is, seeing that US sheriffs have their origins in English county sheriffs, the most famous being The Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood, and Nottinghamshire being an English county. The name comes from "shire" (i.e. county) and "reeve", with a reeve being a medieval form of law enforcement in England.

One interesting bit about the movie rights to this, the author's lawyer added a clause that he would receive a portion of the merchandising rights. At the time he thought it was pointless because he thought nobody would want a lunch box with a mass murderer on it. He was glad that was added later

The movie was filmed in and around Hope, British Columbia, Canada. The book was set in and around Madison, Kentucky. BC is more mountainous and densely wooded than Kentucky, but the climate and environment are fairly similar.

Nitpicks: Teasle received the Distinguished Service Cross, not the Victoria Cross. The latter is a UK/Commonwealth decoration while the former is a US one. Other than that, this is a really well done and sensitive treatment of what might be touchy source material.

Teasle was in fact a veteran of the Korean War. The Battle of Chosen Reservoir to be exact. He was awarded the the Silver Star, The Purple Heart, and the Army Distinguished Service Cross. He also had grudge against Vietnam vets for overshadowing the Korean vets. The Korean War is sandwiched between World War 2 and Vietnam and had already been deemed "The Forgotten War". That's not to say the movie version is justified, just further explanation.

I have to comment for the algorithm, so here's my understanding of the drifter assumption. It's easy for towns to be so far apart in the States that the only strangers you'd see walking in from the outside are drifters, whether they're clean shaven or not. People just don't casually walk 40 miles from the next village to enjoy the weather or buy a loaf of bread. In many communities, no one walks to the store because it would take all day to go there and back. If you're too poor for a vehicle, some communities have special bus services, but mostly you bum a ride off a friend or relative. There was one guy who lost his license and drove his lawn mower to the store for a couple years. I grew up in a rural area where a bunch of "villages" where just a single intersection surrounded by trees and farmland, bigger ones had a McDonalds and a mom and pop diner. Sometimes the cops get in trouble for picking up troublemaking homeless people and driving them across county lines so they'll be some other jurisdiction's problem, which is what I assumed the sheriff was doing. There are occasionally people who do just up and Forest Gump across the country, but they're pretty chatty about it.

I think the story would have given a better progression to Rambo's character if he started trying to not kill anybody, and then as the time passed being hunted down, became more ruthless in his methods and started killing. A little bit ilke the creature in Frankenstein.

Ooh I've I actually read the book. The mounting horror and paranoia Frankenstein has as he faces what I personally image to be youthful and ambitious mistakes haunts his waking moments. Then there's the monster who despite being intelligent and well spoken rages on throughout the night. Merry Shelly really deserves more recognition.

but rambo was a recently discharged green beret with ptsd his job was stealth and killing and when his ptsd got triggered that's what he did. it would be different if he was actually just a drifter, but this book/movie is built on the fact that it was a man trained to kill for war was backed into a corner till he fought back and the horrible consequences for judging the guy when he wondered into town

Dom, I cannot stress enough how refreshing it is to see someone talk about book version of First Blood. For the longest time, I was pretty much convinced that I was the only one who knew that book even existed. Every time I would bring up the book version in conversation, without fail, the person I'm talking to would go "Whuh?!" Even from hardcore Rambo fans, I would get that reaction. So, thank you Dom, for reviewing one of my favorite stories that most don't even know exist.

I know it does not follow the book especially the fact in the book John Dies but when I saw this film first I actually cried in the last scene where Stallone went from Angry rant to the pain of losing his friends and the part where Richard Crenna's character would hug and comfort him.

12:16 The book takes place in Madison, Kentucky and the film takes place in the fictional Hope, Washington, which is actually Hope, British Columbia and all the landmarks in the film still exist, too. If you've got a good eye, you can even make out the maple leaf on the Greyhound.

You can also see a KVOS cameraman. It is a station in Bellingham, WA, but when the movie was filmed they also had production offices in BC, Canada because a large portion of their viewers were located there. So KVOS was probably used just because they were nearby, but also makes sense in universe being set in WA.

I think the some of the differences in the film with its focus on PTSD and the mistreatment of veterans (as you mentioned) may have a lot to do with it being a product of its time. Almost decade after the US started to withdraw and only several years after the war itself ended, it was still something fresh on everyone's minds, and the treatment Film Rambo faces, was...well, while it didn't really get that severe, a lot of veterans of Vietnam got awful treatment all the same which is reflected a lot by the film. When the book was published, the US hadn't been out of the war for very long at all, so I think that may have influenced some of the decisions that were made.

I often talk about this movie, and when I do, I ask people to try to remember how many people Rambo killed in this movie. Most people figure a dozen or more, others say they can't remember. My count: Between 1 and 5. One was the mostly accidental man falling out the helicopter to his death, and between 1 and 4 MAYBE killed during a scene where Rambo is driving a truck and sideswipes a cop car that is chasing him to flip over. Thing is, that scene is so abrupt, pointless and frankly out of place I don't even know why it wasn't thrown on the cutting room floor.If it was removed from the film I guarantee almost no one would notice and it would actually make the film better by making Rambo a bit more consistent. Essentially, Rambo DOESN'T kill people, and that is a huge factor of the whole movie. It is still a thriller and action movie overall, but it's incredibly subversive all things considered. Rambo's "You can't just turn it off" speech is absolutely heart wrenching and masterfully done. In that one mentioned scene, a cop car full of 3-4 cops that has shaded windows that make it near impossible to see the cops inside just APPEARS with siren blaring and they open fire without a verbal warning. The whole thing plays like a random encounter in a sandbox game, and is incredibly out of place with everything in the movie. It honestly bothers me because I have to delete it from the canon of my mind, or believe it was a hallucination.

Funnily enough (and i know this is 2 yrs late) The Batman (pattinson) has a similar chase scene that took me out of the movie bc a highway full of ppl dies due to his reckless need to catch the badguy its cool but takes away from the films methodical and fear inducing batman just a little by making him kill when he methodically injures but never murders throughout the movie (afaik)

Re: Sheriffs vs Police. It's complicated, but to sum it up as best I can, as I understand it. In more rural areas there often isn't an "police" force and it's place is taken by a "Sheriffs Office" so whoever is the lead Sheriff would effectively be the same thing as a chief of police in a larger city. Some larger cities have both a police force and a sheriffs office, and how that plays out depends on the area. I know in New Orleans it's mostly police who worry about enforcing the laws, whereas Sheriffs more handle the post work (If you come to New Orleans you are arrested by the police, then you are taken to jail where you are handed off to the Sheriffs office who run the jail.)

Frequently in the USA, sheriffs serve as county-level police who fulfill police roles where a township does not have its own law enforcement. That's the way it runs in Los Angeles and Orange Counties in California. On a related note, the head of the sheriff's departments out here is referred to as "THE Sheriff", much like "THE Dom", so the lower-ranking officers would likely address their superior as simply "Sheriff".

Tony M the basic difference is the local police operate on the city/town level while the sheriff operates on the county level. If a city or down has no local police force, jurisdiction usually falls to the sheriff's office or highway patrol (depending on exact what you're talking about).

I would add that the term "police" is commonly used (at least where I have lived) as synonymous with "law enforcement" and not specifically to municipal law enforcement. So while "city police" would seem redundant to some people, it's actually a necessary distinction. Also, many US universities have their own campus police (not security/rent-a-cops, an actual mini-police department that is legally equivalent to a municipal police department).

In addition to the literal differences between sheriffs and chiefs of police, I've noticed that writers usually use sheriffs (instead of small town police) when they want the law enforcement in the story to be more adversarial. Sheriffs in media are usually corrupt dickheads or bigoted good ol' boys, unless they are close to the protagonist(s). I guess there's a perception that, unlike chiefs of police who can be dismissed by the mayor or whoever appointed them if they don't toe the line, sheriffs aren't really beholden to anyone once they are elected (more likely to be the "don't tell me about the law; I AM THE LAW" type in fiction). Any story that takes place in a rural or remote area normally has a sheriff even if it's not strictly accurate that there wouldn't be a metro police force in the area as well. However, in this case, the movie's change made this detail more accurate, since a police force's jurisdiction would most likely have ended at the city limits, and then they would have had to call the county sheriff's office to chase Rambo through the mountains anyway. (And he would have killed an additional bunch of people who had nothing to do with the inciting incident.)

Dom, Have you ever considered doing a film vs. novelization Lost in Adaptation? In other words, the film is original and the book is based on that. I can see some issues since novelizations tend to be written from earlier drafts of the shooting script and will have scenes that are cut or altered because of time or just didn't work on film. Of course since Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is on your list, you essentially may be doing that since the movie adapted the book which was adapted from a radio series.

I've got quite a few of those including the original terminator novelisations and I think they can be very different from the movies as the authors have to base them on an original draft of the script and included bits that end up on the cutting room floor or just don't get made here are 2 examples from the novel of the terminator 1, when the terminator walks up to a payphone and shoves the trucker out of his way to read the phone book the trucker walks back and finds the indentation of its finger scrolling down the page and stopping at the 3 Sarah Conners he briefly considers calling them to warn them of a large and sinister looking man is looking for them but decided against, later as he and his wife are watching the news he is suddenly shocked and all he seems able to say for hours is "I should have called them, I should have called them" 2, in the novel the terminator after gunning each of the other Sarah Conners down sliced open their left thighs, Kyle explains that in his time Sarah Conner was dead and skynet had examined her body and found a metal rod in her left leg (cause unknown) and was a means of positivity identifying the real Sarah Conner, this doesn't convince anyone that Kyle is not mad as Sarah says she has no metal rod in her leg but when the terminator gets blown up a piece of it gets embedded in her leg which requires a metal rod to repair.

I absolutely have to suggest you do a Lost in Adaptation of "The Tale of Despereaux", the movie is a great example of how the need to kiddie down movies seems to be more important than representing the source material.

12:16 the location in the movie is Hope, which while supposedly being a small American town in the Pacific Northwest, is actually in British Columbia, Canada. The book however takes place in Kentucky.

I would dispute the idea that "80s action movie starring Slyvester Stallone" is all you need to know about First Blood. Honestly, the action is kinda secondary to a story about what war does to people and how we treat people when they come back from it. It's surprising dark and emotional for the genre. First Blood II is much more in keeping with stereotypical 80s action, but the first one is honestly closer to drama in my opinion.

I haven't read "First Blood," so I'll assume that Dom is correct about the differences between the novel and movie. However, I disagree with his description of the movie as a typical 80s action movie. When I saw the movie in the 2000s, I was aware of the character as an action movie killing machine, so I was very surprised at Rambo's restraint. As Dom says, he avoided killing as much as possible, though he was clearly capable of it. In the sequels, Rambo had no such restraint, becoming the stereotype. In a typical 80s action movie, such as "Commando" or the Rambo sequels, the protagonist is unambiguously the good guy and all of his enemies are unambiguously bad guys who can be killed without remorse.

From what I read, Sylvester Stallone actually suggested the ending change to the Director after they were done with the original ending. The Director loved the change and told the producers that he was going to do it. The producers initially didn't want to but let him do it. They then test screened the film with the suicide ending. The audience hated it. One guy even threatened to hurt the Director out loud in the theatre if he found him.

I prefer this sort of "I let a lot of the details go" big picture sorts of comparisons. Sometimes it feels like you get bogged down in certain details (like Harry Potter having green eyes) and those are the sorts of things I wouldn't even notice and cannot get upset about.

In regards to the difference between a police chief and a sheriff, chiefs are generally appointed by the mayor of the municipality and generally have a defined jurisdiction based on the boundaries of the city or town. A sheriff is elected to the post and have authority within the county that elected them.

Dom, I would really love for you to do an episode on Lolita. It's one of the most controversial books ever written but also one of the most complex. It would be wonderful to see you compare it with either of the movies, though personally I would recommend the 90's version as it presents itself as a romance more than it really has right to. Jeremy Irons' performance in particular is something I would love to see you address, though the casting of Lolita herself is also something that warrants discussion. You're the best, man.

About the change in location: You know that little sign under the arch Rambo walks under at the beginning of the film that says "Welcome to Hope?" Yeah, that's Hope, _British Columbia_ up here in Canada. The way I hear it, Hope banned all pyrotechnics because the fire caused by the exploding "gas station" (aka. vacant lot with a facelift) burned out of control and took out a huge chunk of the place. www.bcliving.ca/chasing-rambo-in-hope-bc

You were right, the book and movie did take place in different locations. The book takes place in Kentucky, which I remember because that's the state I live in, and I initially thought the movie had kind of a northwestern feel to it and confirmed through Wikipedia that it takes place in Washington, which is in the northwest. Although honestly I don't know where I got the idea of a northwestern feel, considering I've never been to the northwest.

Hoping you'll do the novelizations of the two sequels also written by Morrell. I only read FB2 but I think it's one of yhose cases when the novelization is better than the original. In the US there's a lot of variation region to region, but in *general*, Police, Sheriffs, Troopers (or their equivalents in states like California and Texas that have a different name for them), and Federal Marshals are all officers of the law, but are different in that they are provided by different levels of government. Police are provided by medium-large cities, sheriffs by the county, but both basically do normal police work--just police are usually seen in more urban environs and sheriffs in small towns or countryside, though they can go up to medium-sized suburbs if that city feels the sheriffs do a good enough job that they don't need to bother creating their own PD. A sheriff Commander or Captain usually wouldn't be called a Chief, but the head of a large sheriff's station might be called that by analogy or misunderstanding (even we can't keep it straight). State Troopers generally only get involved where jurisdiction is confusing (such as the California Highway Patrol's policing of California's gargantuan network of highways) or local cops get in WAAAY over their heads, but a lot of the responsibility for when the local police are simply over their heads has shifted over time to other groups such as the National Guard or Riot Police. Federal Marshals serve federal law only, where most police serve state and local law as well, and since most the basic common-law crimes are technically state issues not federal ones would be a rare sight pretty much anywhere. And a lot of their more general job of "enforce federal laws" was shifted to more specific agencies like the FBI, but they still serve federal warrants and run the federal witness protection program. In Western movies, they (or some particularly active State trooper forces like the Texas Rangers)'d be the guys allowed to hunt down the real notorious criminals even after they had crossed state lines--or even onto native reservations, which was completely prohibited for normal sheriffs or police.
