The visual story telling in this episode is on epic level. This is why I was so excited when I found that Keiichirō Saitō is returning as director for s.2 1st - We have the ring shown in 2 previous episodes. We have the set up that its important but Frieren does not remember why. 2nd - The bell at the beginning of the episode. Foreshadowing what would happen while also starting the process of memory returning to Frieren. 3rd - The way the object finding spell is presented. An illuminating light on a dark sky just before dawn - like a memory coming back in ones' mind before its fully revealed. 4th - The big pay-off. The scene with the clock tower standing between Himmel and Frieren, symbolizing time. And the shadows behind the two of them representing how much of their life have passed. 5th - And to wrap things up a mirroring relationship between Fern/Stark and Himmel/Frieren. Fern's ring having a blossoming mirrored lotus symbolizing that her love with Stark would happen. While Frieren's one a mirrored bulb lotus symbolizing that her love with Himmel would never do. And to add even more weight we have the quote "I am used to losing things", not only referring to the ring but to people.

Also, back in episode 1 we see Frieren reacting strongly to the sound of the bell ringing at Himmel's funeral. Before that, she felt no emotion during the whole ceremony, but she seems to "wake up" when hearing the sound. And there is an interesting delay visually, where the swinging of the bell is shown, but the sound of it ringing is only heard a second later, perhaps symbolizing how her feelings were similarly delayed. It is only at that point that Frieren breaks down in tears, but she doesn't understand why, because the emotions are so new and unfamiliar to her.

One thing I seldom see people mention in the comments is that, if you go back and look at episode 1? Immediately after the burial scene? Frieren is holding and looking at the ring. It's baaaaarely visible and it's a short moment but like, can you imagine dropping that in just for the payoff 12 episodes later? It also kind of indicates that, even then, Frieren did consider the ring somewhat special despite her playing off its loss.

This episode is precisely why I think the way this story is presented works so well, and why so many people inexplicably get choked up every time a flashback starts and we see Himmel. We already know how their story ended up. Seeing a display like this from Himmel is not particularly surprising or a "twist", but we as the viewers know from the start how tragic and beautiful that moment is every second it's playing out. It's that weird mix of happy and incredible sadness.

Himmel loved Frieren very dearly. Did you notice that in the 1st episode that he was still on his own when Frieren returned to visit him 50 years later? Himmel never married because of his love for Frieren. His line ended with him. And now it seems that we're seeing Frieren slowly realizing that she loves him too...30 years after his passing.

​@@Zettern96 Manga Spoilers . . . . . . . . . . There's an arc in the manga where the present Frieren get transpored back to the past while they're still on the journey to kill the Demon King. The whole party then got ambushed by a demon who's signature magic is giving it's victims a dream they oh so desire (the whole party got to know about the Future Frieren shenanigans since Frieren told them she's from the future and need their help). We then get a scene where Himmel and Frieren are about to kiss and get married, which was at first implicitly framed as Himmel's dream. It then got revealed that He and Frieren share the same dream. Before Frieren returned to the present, Himmel thanked her for showing him such a nice dream. So even before they killed the Demon King, Himmel already knew that Frieren noticed and reciprocated his love but only after he died.😭😭😭

If you look all the way back to Episode 1 you can see Frieren looking at the ring in silence immediately after Himmel's burial. Again they show Frieren lost in thought looking at the ring after Fern pours the clothes dissolving potion over her head. They've been subtly leading up to the reveal about this ring and how important it is to Frieren from the very beginning. I agree with you that Himmel knew Frieren wouldn't understand his gesture, but I don't think he expected her to understand what happened over time. I think he did that gesture, not because of Frieren, but because those were his feelings. In the first chapter we caught a glimpse the end of the days of Himmel, and he lived alone. This time it's not about "what Himmel would do", this time it's what Himmel did: the hero made a declaration of eternal love, and lived by that declaration until the end of his days.

The visual storytelling and the sound design in addition to the writing and characters is what makes this my #1 anime of all time, and it deserves it's number one spot on MAL as well. The only thing that stood between their love was time, visualised by the clocktower between them, which himmel understood and accepted. He loved her in his own way, enjoyed her company as much as he could and left her plenty to remember him by so she wouldn't be alone in the future.

Himmel accepted Frieren the way she was, he had unconditional love for her. So much so that he became immortalized as a hero so that Frieren would not feel lonely, with so many statues of him around the world.The barrier to this unconditional love is unfortunately time

This show is so rewatchable because of the way it fleshes out its characters so slowly and naturally over the season. They're the exact same characters the whole time, but as we learn things about them (exactly like the ring scene), we learn more of their motivations. It doesn't change the character at all, but it completely changes how we see their decisions because we understand them as people better. I don't think I've ever seen a story that does that as well as Frieren

I feel like things were left unsaid intentionally in Himmel's case. I suspect he didn't wanna tell Frieren he loved her because he knew she'd far outlive him. Understanding what kind of guy he is, perhaps he thought it'd be unfair to burden her with that, knowing he'd die and leave her to deal with whatever feelings remained.

Beyond the clock tower separating Himmel and Frieren, if you notice Fern's bracelet has the Mirrored Lotus in full bloom, which signifies that her love has or will blossom fully and become realized, whereas Frieren's ring is a Lotus Bud, meaning that while the love is there and like Sein said Eternal, it will never blossom into reality.

I think Frieren also loved Himmel. She just didn't understand her own feelings. His death hit her really hard and she didn't know why. The ring was important to her but she didn't know why. For elves it probably just takes longer until they realize they love someone. Tragically, that someone is already dead for almost thirty years.

I love this because of the many layers of story telling, when you get this reveal, like you said you back track to episode 1 from the moment she's staring at the ring, then all the memories before this point gain an entirely new meaning. I feel Himmel understood completely Frieren and he knew he wouldn't live long enough for him to see her realize she was inlove with him all along it just took her longer to understand it. The next episodes will touch this topic again, it will help you to understand Frieren better too and the pain of their immortality.

Frieren is just a show that manages to pull on your heartstrings at every turn. If it's not sad, its happy. If it's not happy, it's not necessarily sad.. but can be funny. If it's not funny it is moving and emotional. There's just nothing this show didn't play on for me.. and it did so amazingly well. The scene of Himmel basically proposing silently, without requiring any answer or even act by Frieren other than allowing him to take her hand in such a way.. which she did. It's the sweet, tender, romantic (if one sided - due to the other not realizing) and memorable moment that sold this entire episode so well. We feel for both Frieren and Himmel.. we want them to get together, but we know it's all flashbacks some 80-90 years in the past and nothing came of it. It will make their encounter in Heaven - should it happen, I can't spoil because I legitimately don't know anything past the point of the anime that we already have - all the more, shall we say... interesting? I can only speculate on that one. It is scenes such as this, as well as what has happened prior to this episode and also what happens after (which I am looking forward to see her reactions to.. quite a few AMAZING moments) that make this show the easy all time top #1 anime for me. The animation quality, the voice acting, the music, the characters (again, of which there are still quite a few great ones coming). I simply cannot imagine this ever being topped. Not even by Frieren season 2.

I loved the fact that the clock tower was in between Himmel and Frieren symbolizing that the only thing that stood between their relationship was time. I love the time theme in this anime so much.

It gets even more intense: Did you notice, that the Mirror Lotus on Ferns bracelet looks different to the one on Frieren ring? The one on Ferns bracelet means eternal love, but the one on Frieren is a unbloomed lotus, which stands for a love that never bloomed.

I think you're right that Himmel knew Frieren wouldn't understand proposals/marriage, and that he hoped she might understand many years later, but I think there could be even more nuance there. Knowing the kind of guy he is, I suspect he intentionally never explained things like that (or confessed that he loved her) because he knew she'd far outlive him. Not wanting to burden her with those feelings for many years after he's gone seems like the kind of thing he'd do. In any case, it's clear he resigned himself to just enjoying her company while he could.

From the rear-view mirror perspective.. How amazing and lucky we all are to get 28 episodes for a 1st season? By the standards of today's media, most are 12-13 episodes and then a year or 2 wait for another dozen. This would be a season-ending episode if it were any other show, just to grip you for the next season. NOPE! We get 14 more after this. A blessing upon humanity that this series exists the way it is.

It debuted with 4 episodes on the first day and it breaks me that no one put that in theaters. I would pay good money just to see the meteor shower part in theaters.

@@SageVallant I can see it being in theatres in Japan, but not the US. I saw Princess Mononoke in a theatre in the US when it debuted but it was because of Disney. Hardly any anime gets into western mainstream. That will change someday, but not for a while.

One little detail I love is how Fern hears about the missing ring and immediately declares that they will stay as long as it takes to scour the entire forest and find that ring. Fern, who can't stand to wait for anything and always gets mad at Frieren for wasting time, doesn't even have to think about this one for half a second. She knows the ring is IMPORTANT. Also, Himmel was absolutely sowing the seeds for Frieren to understand him and his feelings on her own timeline, exactly as you say. He literally said all the statues were for Frieren to remember him by. "We're not fairy tales. We really existed."
