This was our first sleeper train journey and what better way than to get initiated in Italy?! 🇮🇹 After 12 hours on a train (and a boat), we made it from Rome to Palermo, Sicily! Enjoy the video and stay tuned next Sunday for a day dedicated to Palermo (and delicious Sicilian food) 😊

We've ALWAYS wanted to travel on a sleeper-train. Having your transportation be your lodging for a night so you can hit the ground running when you arrive always seems like the best of both worlds. We're excited to see more of your adventures in Sicily! 😊 🚆

It’s pretty nice! We love taking trains between destinations. And the sleeper train was a fun experience! We’ll for sure take more in the future. We have quite a few videos from Sicily that’ll post over the next few weeks! 🇮🇹 thanks for watching 😊

Rail ferries in Europe: in reality there is also the ferry line that connects Villa San Giovanni with Golfo Aranci marittima (Sardinia), but it is used rarely and only for freight wagons or to send diesel locomotives and railcars from Sardinia to the continent for their inspection at one of the Trenitalia workshops. In the past, the FS ferries to Golfo Aranci Marittima set sail from Civitavecchia Marittima and also transported cars, trucks and passengers on foot. They were quite small and cheap. It took them exactly 8 hours and the two daytime couples and the two nighttime couples met halfway across the sea. From the Radio Room it was possible to make telephone calls to the whole world via coastal radio station with payment in gold francs converted into Italian lire

So, to explain some things in the video. Your car was named "Excelsior" as there actually are 4 compartments with toilet AND SHOWER en-suite. Actually, the Italian night trains are pretty much confusing with their travelling class names. - "Basic" is a seating car. - "Comfort" is a couchette car, but with only 4 bunks in compartment instead of 6, as it was standard in couchettes. - "Deluxe" is a basic sleeping car (MU type) with 3 beds and washbasin in compartment. That is the type of compartment you travelled in, but in a different car. - "Excelsior" car (the T3S sleeping car type) has 4 en-suite compartments, the others are normal as in "Deluxe" cars. That was your car, which only runs on this train.

Love the train journey! FYI, I travelled in the EU for three months last fall and you can get a QR code when you apply for an EU health pass as a visitor. We applied through the French Government’s website (the first country we travelled to) . It took almost a month to have the application processed and the pass approved-which was just in time for our trip! Even though it was issued by France we could use this QR code in all EU countries. It was free and easy to apply for-just a bit of wait to receive it. I don’t think any restaurant or museum in Germany would have let us enter without the pass, so we were happy we had it!

Glad you enjoyed the train video! Thank you for the tip; that’s super helpful! We’ll have to do that if we make it back soon to the EU.

I'm so glad I found your video. I was curious to see how the sleeper train would look or be like as I plan to do Rome to Catania later this year. I have 2 questions though, is there a lock on the cabin door on the outside? Like if you both left the room for abit, is there a key to lock or open the door so you know your bags are safe? Also, when I was looking at train tickets, some of them said ferry price not included. How do you pay for that? I hope to hear back from you. im off to see your other sicilian adventures!
@Luigi-uj5ml11 ай бұрын
For a few years now, the compartment doors of sleeper and sleeper carriages can be locked from the inside. As far as tickets are concerned, you only have to pay for the sea crossing if you do not intend to use a train that is not ferried between Villa San Giovanni and Messina Marittima. If, however, you use an Intercity or a night train that is ferried, the sea crossing is included since the ferry belongs to RFI (it is considered a section of track). For a few years now, when the RFI ferry ferries a train, cars and foot travelers have no longer been allowed on board.

Looks a fun way to head south from Rome. I have always fancied a decent sleeper train. This had the added interest of the ferry to Sicily. Your apartment in Palermo looked great. My only sleeper experience was years ago in Turkey. A cabin for six had a group of Turkish students who insisted on being hospitable until 4am. Not much sleep. Thanks for the info. I have been on a few Italian trains and this might well be a future option.

as an Italian I'll tell you, I took this type of train several times from Tuscany to Calabria (and once even from Florence to Vienna) and there even used to be a service which included having your car put on another train for cars that was just behind the passenger one and it was really convenient. They would then divide the train in Lamezia, most of it would then continue on to Palermo/Siracusa and the remaining coaches would be sent on to Reggio Calabria via the Jonica railway. Sadly they no longer have long haul trains on that railway and they removed the "car behind you service" (I don't know what's it called in english, but in italian is "auto al seguito" and "autozug" in german) because thieves would steal stuff from the cars when the train was stopped especially in large stations like Napoli Centrale which is one of the reasons now Intercity Notte trains usually avoid big stations like, for example, if a train departs Rome, instead of going to Naples it's diverted to Caserta and if it departs Turin it goes to Genoa and the Thyrrenian railway and if it departs Milano Centrale it goes to Firenze Campo di Marte and not Santa Maria Novella. Plus, they're always late. It is already a miracle if a high speed train arrives on time and doesn't accumulate delay over time, let alone a sleeper train. I once took it from Pisa and was supposed to be in Lamezia at around 9 am. The station announcements kept changing between "it's arriving" and "it's delayed". Eventually someone had to call the train conductor themselves and they were informed that the locomotive had broken down and they had to send another one. It ended up with a delay of 3 hours and 10 minutes, my worst train delay so far. However, another time I took the same train (this time from Campo di Marte) it arrived 30 minutes late but actually managed to arrive on time. Me and my mom were originally planning to get off in Rosarno, another town more south than Lamezia and closer to our destination but we decided that since the train was gonna have delays anyway we chose Lamezia. What ended up happening was we got off at 5 am and had to wait 2 hours till the car rent was open 😂😂
