Hello and welcome to very special train review!
Today we will be riding on one of the last remaining train-ferry services between Sicily & mainland Italy with Trenitalia Intercity. We depart Siracusa and travel up the East coast of the island, catch the ferry from Messina, across to San Giovani and continue up Italy's West coast to Naples/ Napoli.
Sit back and enjoy the ride on the most unique train service I've experienced to date! The trip also takes us past Mount Etna & Mount Vesuvius which adds to the amazing scenery!
Date of Filming: 30/7/20
Camera: GoPro Hero 7 Black
Operator: Trenitalia
Departure: Siracusa, Sicily
Arrival: Naples / Napoli Centrale, Italy
Cost: €32.90 (Second Class, Advanced Fare)
Check out my friend Dylan's Travel Report's video of the sleeper train version which also goes on the ferry here:

Amazing train trip! About the Messina bridge: they have been talking about building it since the roman times (2000 years ago) but never happend. Other projects were done in the XIX century by the "Borbone", the dominators of Sicily at that time (tunnel, bridge, ecc) but they didn't do. During the '900 a company was founded (Stretto di Messina S.p.A.) with the purpose of building a bridge. After a huge sequence of bureaucracy and many past governments, the project was approved and the works began around 2010. They had already begun construction of the pylons and excavations for the motorway ramps but the global economic crisis that hit Europe in 2011 led to the interruption of the works by the "Monti" government. The Stretto di Messina S.p.A. Company was dismantled and a lot of money were lost. The debate is still ongoing and is very popular. Many sicilians (and calabrian, but also the whole southern Italy) feel cheated by the Italian state and are furious because they have been waiting for tens of years (the lack of a bridge and high-speed rail continues to cause serious delays in economic development), but the company is gone and therefore the possibilities of building the bridge are reduced to a minimum at the present stage. One of the problems of the construction of the bridge is the danger of crossing an area with strong seismicity (which caused catastrophic earthquakes such as that of Messina in 1908, the most serious documented disaster in the history of Europe, with over 200,000 deaths) in addition to the fact that the area is crossed by strong sea currents and that the seabed is very deep and this implies the construction of very deep pylons, besides the fact that it would be the longest suspension bridge in the world (its tower would be around 400 meters high). According to the engineers, these problems were solved in the design phase. The problem remains a political one. Some politicians had proposed the financing of the bridge in the European Recovery Plan (as it would be located along the route of the TEN N.5 Helsinki-Valletta corridor) but the idea was discarded at the last moment. It is likely that the bridge will never be built in the near future, so crossing the train by ferry will remain the standard service (as far as the train is concerned). 😐

I think that if there is one thing menacing the existence of those ferries it's not the chance to have a bridge in the future, but the existence of affordable flights from all Italy. From Milan to Sicily it has always less sense to spend a lot of hours on a sleeper train if there are plenty of flights from Milan to 4 different Sicilian airports. It can make sense if it's a summer-holiday and it's a family traveling on a budget, with children, lots of luggage and with a destination far from the Sicilian airports. And it's a similar situation from Rome...

I just hope when it will happen, they will choose the best design, the most appealing, paired with the best structural system. I wish so. The point is that the railway leading to Noto, Pozzallo, Ragusa and Gela, just below Siracusa, is a disgrace. You could take as much as 5 hours for covering 80 km. I travelled northbound from Catania to Messina and it was quite fast. And the E464 locomotive that you had, it's InterCity version is only in Sicily, as in the rest of Italy (except Sardinia, where the railway is all unelectrified) they are used for regional services only
