Bula, I think its not a scam , but a rip off / price gouging by taxi drivers. It happens in Fiji too.
@XLTravels5 күн бұрын
Yeah happens everywhere around the world sadly. I just thought I would finally make a video about it because I go back to Samoa all the time and come across this repeatedly. Sadly not a good look for tourists if they come and first thing they come across is getting overcharged a taxi ride straight away.

Taxi fares in Samoa will always be contentious due to the lack Taxi Meters. I've been traveling to and from Samoa for the last 40 years and and this has always been the problem. Taxi drivers don't need to inflate fares because most passengers, including myself always pay more than the fare quoted. In 2023, the last time I visited, I did a small grocery shopping at Frankie's for my taxi driver. You see, honesty can surprise you in so many ways.

If you want to maintain the integrity of your statements on personal videos like this, it pays to go and get the taxi fare fact sheet from the Ministry of Transport or the Ministry of Labour. Hey BB - overseas traveller here too, for long taxi rides I’d give an extra 10-20 tala & shorter trips 5-10 tala more as petrol prices are high in Samoa. That’s what I do anyway, thanks for the vid uce happy travelling! Ps. Good tips re phone packages.

Malo uso! Yeah I will always tip my drivers when I am back home or anywhere around the world. Unfortunately I usually know how much a taxi ride is from one point to another in Samoa so when they try to over charge me by a lot it really annoys me. If a cab driver is up front and gives me the right price or close to it, ill usually reward their honesty with a nice tip. I'm sure other foreigners would do the same as well. Safe travels friend!

Definitely not a scam in my opinion, considering it’s a 40-45min drive. An Uber costs more here in NZ for that distance, also it’s 100WST which is about 60NZD, reasonable pricing. Bit of an unfair take on the Taxi drivers/services in the homeland, but hey that’s your take I guess.

Malo uso, although there are scammers out there who do prey on the gullible...I don't ever remember the fare to Apia ever being $60 (maybe it was in the early 2000s) but when I moved away in 2011, the standard fare was always $80 tala. When I last took a cab in 2019 to surprise my parents, it was still $80 tala as well then. So, i wouldn't say $100 5/6 years later is unreasonable.
@XLTravels5 күн бұрын
Malo uso! Man im sorry to say this but you were most likely getting scammed back then too. I travel to Samoa often and have always come across taxi drivers trying to overcharge. December last year I took a cab from Lava hotel in Apia to mulifanua warf and it was $80 tala. Everywhere around the world taxi drivers will try to overcharge at the airport and tourist spots and sadly if people dont know then they dont know. You might think the standard fare is $100 tala but if you ask the security officers in the terminal before you come out how much a cab would cost they would say around $60. If a taxi driver says anything over $70 then they are def lying lol
@Sam0anKnight075 күн бұрын
@XLTravels called my folks when i first saw ur video asked how much it was and they said it was $65 (our house is in Tuaefu) but the reason I always remember it being $80 was because we always took a taxi van and they would charge an extra $5 (for the lot of us and luggage), plus my folks also would tip them another $10 which why $80 was always ingrained in my head lol

There's a better way to address this instead of bringing down a whole country due to your 1 person experience. If you don't know, Samoa government had an ad on tv addressing this. People like you just want the views, this is not the Samoan way. Taxi's in Aus (Brisbane airport) are way worse, NZ taxi's in Auckland far more. So please, say something nice.

Every time I go to Samoa taxi drivers always try to over charge me, sometimes at even double the rate, probably because they know I am from overseas.
