Hey Gary, I still haven't left Samui. 😅 Loving this island! I haven't been to Na Mueang yet but will have to try it now after seeing this video. If I may give a couple recommendations although not very "local" location the food is pretty good, E-Saan Krok Mai (I eat there practically every day), Father of Noodles and The Fish Restaurant. As you may know there are a lot of luxury resorts in Koh Samui. One I've really enjoyed was Conrad Samui in Taling Ngam close to Ying's Cooking School which has a few restaurants within the resort. Can't wait to see more Samui videos!

Thanks Gary for this look into the quiet side of Samui. I first travelled to Thailand in 1997 and spent ten days on Samui, loved it! From the looks of it, things have changed quite a bit but was so glad you found a bit of old Samui to enjoy. Things were pretty jumping on Chaweng when I was there but Lamai and Bo Phut were really chill and the rest of the Island was fairly undeveloped then. One of my favorite food stories was my ex and I were cruising along from Chaweng towards the SW side of the Island and ran across a little roadside restaurant and we pulled in for lunch. Great view overlooking the Gulf of Thailand on the East side of the the Island, we got a cold Chang and ordered some food, I got the spicy Squid salad, just barely cooked squid rings and tentacles, tomatoes, onion, spring onions and a dressing of fish sauce, chilies, sugar and lime juice tossed quickly after the squid was cooked and served strait away. I fell in love with this dish and every time I go back to Thailand I seek it out. Thanks for your tour of Samui, I'm going to have to make some of that up soon and thanks for the tips for the next time I end up there!

There are many variations of bak Kut teh in Singapore and Malaysia. The Teochew version has a peppery broth, there is a robust herbal version in Kuala Lumpur and there is the Klang version (which can include ingredients such as enoki mushrooms, trotters and tail), similar to what you ordered in Koh Samui. Give them a try when you have the chance. Same same but different.

It's Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶 - directly translated as meat bone tea but officially known as Pork Bone tea). Very well-known in Malaysia. Singapore stole it from us and made a clear broth without adding the Chinese dry herbs (熟地 - shu di - Foxglove root) or even dark soy. In Malaysia, we even have the dry version of Bak Kut Teh. If you would like to discover more best you visit Malaysia & avoid the touristy cliché area like Jalan Alor.

The Ba Kut Teh thai version looks and presume should taste different from the Singaporean version. The Sing version normally is only made with short ribs, has the spices without the floating mushrooms and vegetables. There are places that would serve you this soup with a syrupy bitter thick sauce in a miniature cup that you take between sips of the broth. Must try as this is a staple pretty much like Laksa. The Hah Gao, Shiumai, looks somewhat commercially made that is bought in quantity and just steamed. Not what a handmade/homemade version. Sorry, just my opinion, I can see why you weren't sold on the flavor. Good efforts in sharing your tastes and flavors!
