put the stock shift linkage in and change the fluid before you spend 30 to ship and rebuild
@GarageTherapyOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, I doubt that the gearbox needs a rebuild. If the syncros/pinion shafts were worn you would hear & possibly feel the chatter when changing and when you left off the gas suddenly. Having quite a bit of experience with the 996/997 I would go back to the stock GT3 RS shift setup and linkages if they HAVE been messed with. The stock shift is really really short by default and notchy so modification for the RS is unnecessary. The twitchy rear end will be two things generally. The rear sway bar is at the stiffer end of the settings and the geometry will need to be adjusted. The 997.1 and .2 chassis are much more traditional 911 than the 991.1 and .2s you have experienced so lift off oversteer is a lot easier. However as you said at 30-40mph it shouldn't do that. I would wager the previous owners had a customer geo setup on the car for the track. The suspension on the 997.2 GT3 RS is magical so unless you go full blown KW Clubsport (Manthey setup), Ohlins or Bilstein and a real good geo by an expert again I would leave it be, its great out the box. If the clutch hasnt been done I would certainly have that looked at and changed. Worn clutches can produce more noises which makes you think something is wrong in a Mezger car. Brake squeal is part of the deal with that gen of PCCB but with some heat it does calm down a bit. Check the pads of OEM Porsche would be my advise. Hope this helps, //Maz

My 987.2 has numeric cables which were very poorly set up by the previous owner, it was extremely notchy and physically difficult to change gear. These cables have a massive amount of adjustment and after some tweaking the shift is now solid and smooth therefore I would recommend playing with the setup before pulling the box out.
@cjbaldwin2562 жыл бұрын
pretty sure the car has the numeric without the cables, which could be a problem in itself
@joetacchino44702 жыл бұрын
Get rid of that Numeric before you decide to do anything. Would hate to re-build the trans because of a wonky shifter. I suspect it’s the shifter. It seems so notch when you move it compared to my experience in non-GT 997’s. A worn synchro wouldn’t present balking until the very last second when you try to engage it. It looks, and I could be wrong, like you are experiencing resistance throughout the entire throw, which would point to shifter.
@Tdaz2502 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It’s as if the whole thing is too stiff. Which is too bad because numeric is known to be “the best shifter setup”
@my-usirname23602 жыл бұрын
The shifter in 997 GT cars is nothing like the other models. It is notchy and rifle boot like from the factory. I have had experience with both, but not any with a numeric shifter.
@atrainshoes63672 жыл бұрын
It’s because the rs is a pure track car if you know how it feels it’s not going to feel all smooth because it’s not meant to be that way. Get a normal gt3 then if you want that feel
@nls85202 жыл бұрын
@Atrain Shoes But... both 997.2 GT cars use the same transmission and also shifter. The only powertrain or driveline difference is in between the lightweight flywheel of the RS and the gearing is lower in RS slightly. Otherwise same throw feel and notchyness.
@ehpdrives2 жыл бұрын
When I bought my cayman R I got to drive a 997.2 GT3 right after. It was crazy how much notchier and noisy the GT3 was. The trans whine, the shifter, the clutch chatter, the stiff ride. You could tell it was a race car with a license plate and it’s awesome
@atom9992 жыл бұрын

@LT644442 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt. I have a 996tt with the numeric and cables. The chatter you are experiencing from the inside is from the cup cables, numeric offers insulation to help quiet it down. Also, I doubt you need a transmission rebuild. I would try switching back to all new oem shifter and cables to see what you think. The numeric takes a lot of force and is very notchy by design.
@patrickraf98842 жыл бұрын
I agree with you in regards to 997’s. They are so raw which is the reason I love mine. The newer ones are faster but the 997 is fast enough to get me in trouble .
@joetacchino44702 жыл бұрын
Also, for heel-toe; if your feet and ankles are like mine, you’re not heel-toe. You’re left forefoot - right forefoot. Just roll your foot outward keeping your heel on the floor. I’m duck footed so I can’t use my heel. The left side of my foot is on the brake, and the right side rolls out and down to blip the throttle. . Get the Rennline adjustable throttle pedal. You can dial in the spacing and height and it’s PERFECT to get the heel - toe right.

@ 13.30 - "... is it really jacked up, or is it my..." Its you Matt, the car is everything you feel, hear and garner while driving it. Coming to terms with the unique experiences of a car of this nature is part of the process. You should make it yours for sure but the gearbox is not an issue. If you want to upgrade it, that is what it is, but the shifting experience you feel is the cables and shifter. I LOVE the factory short shifter in my 997.1 Turbo and watching you shift, my shifter throw is similar without the clicking, if I'm hearing that correctly. I think you need a mechanic to address the cables and shifter.

Matt, as many others are noting before you blow loads of money on gear box, it may not be the gear box. I drove my 997 gt3 over 30,000 miles and the car was always raw. The gearbox is like caulking a rifle. But as you see, the car is constantly reminding you how to drive it, it’s one of the most intense and fun cars I’ve ever owned. Hope this helps. Shine on !

What I can tell you from my experience driving the 997 platform it’s a bit notchy. I’ve only had seat time in a 997 turbo with upgraded clutch and flywheel and it liked higher rpm. At lower speeds it was kind of rough how your saying it is on the RS. Anyways first drive gave me all the sounds I knew the 3.8 RS makes.

Although it may be annoying at first the pursuit of the project can be fulfilling. Obviously you have found an even ground with this car which I find extremely awesome. Maybe it's wisdom but nonetheless I am excited that you are trying something new despite your distaste for the jankiness that would surprise us likeminded folk!

Heel / Toe (toe and toe).. The seat looks too close and too high. Is the steering wheel as close to you as it can be? And for heel and toe, don't piston your right leg. Find a place for your heel and pivot your foot (ankle) from this spot.. Pistoning your leg from the hip makes repeatability of braking or blipping impossible.. Pivoting on your heel allows your foot (ankle) to learn and repeat both "pressure" on brake, and distance of travel for braking and blipping. Avoid shoving your foot too far under the dash when learning where your heel needs to be placed. The heel should stay in one place for throttle/braking/blipping.. Soon as you get comfortable with heel pivot of the right foot, you will be AMAZED and happier.. Love the RS video series. Thanks!! 🏁
