Bit of a disappointing review from Ginny. I drive a Megane and it has some quirks but is a really good car. The drive selector is easy to get used to even if French logic means R and D are not where you expect. The cable storage is exactly the same as on the Megane and frankly yes it could be a nuisance if you had to get to the cable with a boot full of stuff..but here’s the thing. I rarely carry the cable as away from I pretty much always use CCS rapid chargers so don’t need my cable. On the rare occasion I know I might (e.g a hotel 7kwh charger) I just find some space in the boot. Oh and yes the underfloor storage bit is actually the same issue in many EVs. As to the speech recognition..just say heh Google it is brilliant and amongst many things it will do is turn volume up and down and the same with temperature. Iam not a fan of Google but their car system is really good. As to the rest..iam sure driving is a matter of taste and other journalist seem to like it and I may or may not if and when I have a test drive. Final bit. Wind noise. I suspect the car you drove has the same problem I currently have and that needs fixing. Basically some of the windows are falling a small amount within the door. If you hit the raise window button it goes away.

Agree, it appears that they're all fixated on how the plastics feel. Soft touch plastics and materials high up, and on touch points, look and feel great. Hard, wipe-clean plastics lower down where they can pick up scuffs from shoes, bags, and things are better. A 2014 Mazda 3 I once owned had soft touch plastics on the entire door card, and on the first attempt to clean the car, my microfibre cloth scored it very low down. The cloth tore a track along the surface. I notice that neither my 2016 MX-5 nor my 2021 Mazda 3 have this problem. Soft touch isn't always appropriate.

The only thing I don't agree with is your dislike for the Renault satellite style radio remote. I find it so much more natural and convenient to just stretch two fingers with my hand in its natural resting position on the steering wheel with the satellite remote. On other brands, with the buttons on the front of the spokes, somehow I can never reach the buttons without moving my hand or holding the steering wheel in a position that feels unnatural. I definitely wish more brands would do the remote satellite instead of the buttons. But I guess my hands are larger than yours, so that might be the reason for our different preferences.

Hi from Italy, i didnt hear about one pedal driving…. How is it in this car? Thanks
@Aegirsince20122 ай бұрын
One pedal driving isn’t available in the Renault 5. There are multiple levels of power regeneration but it won’t stop without hitting the breaks. However,, the Renault 4 will apparently have it. The 5 could perhaps get it later.

A critical review. It would be great to see this car go head to head with the new Citroen eC3. Thus far, the Renault 5 is my preferred choice.
@timnicholls98272 ай бұрын
Compared to the Citroen eC3, it is a bit obvious how they have pared back to achieve the price. Like the original Renault 5 it has poor rear legroom where the Citroen definitely scores. On the boot like the Megane it isn't very long but deep instead. Probably the eC3 has more useful space although the volume is less on paper. As usual Renault errs on the very optimistic as regards range. However it does have external style and Renault have learned not to penny pinch on the heat pump which is only an optional extra on the Citroen. The only car (without a frunk) where you dont have to empty the boot to get at the cable is the Skoda Elroq which has the brilliant solution of storing it under the parcel shelf. Why has nobody thought of that before?
@flo_h_962 ай бұрын
All the negatives you mention have nothing to do with the price and equipment and used materials are still better than on the e-C3. Also the e-C3 is longer and has a smaller boot, obviously it therefore has a bit more rear leg room. But cars of this size always will either have good rear leg room or a well sized boot and not both. The boot of the e-C3 might be easier to use, but in the end if you have something big it still might fit in the R5 but not the e-C3 as the missing space might be the deciding factor. Renault is not more optimistic with range than others. In perfect conditions you can get the WLTP range with all the Renaults, whereas some cars from other manufacturers aren't able to, and only very few are able to go over the WLTP range. The Megane is very efficient and R5 is efficient too according to other reviews. The Scenic is also very efficient in most scenarios. Only on the motorway it's not the most efficient bc they made one of the best looking cars with a distinct design and not only focused on aerodynamic in the design, but it's also not a super thirty car. There other SUVs which are way more inefficient

Great video - 2 out of the 3 bug issues you mentioned, made my decision not to choose this as my next car. Shame as I really like the look of the R5 - back in the day this was my very first car……

There is no way that this car can be described as "compact", have you ever driven the original? That was compact and just what is needed for local driving. This is the size of a house by comparison. Good review as always, Ginny.

ROAD NOISE. (Wind noise on the motorway). This is a deal breaker for me. I’m really hoping this was just a one off and that when you get the car on UK roads you will find it so. Please update asap.

The car is huge no? It's 1,50m tall, same as a modern S-Class. Reminds me of the Ioniq 5, looked like a nice hatchback on pictures, but in the flesh it's a bit of a monster.
@madmandonna12 ай бұрын
It's tall because it's built on top of a massive battery pack, if it wasn't you'd have 0 head room. It's smaller in length than the clio and by modern standard, it's small.
@grandtourerpt2 ай бұрын
@@madmandonna1 that's bullshit. Other EVs with much larger batteries are not as tall. That's just bad design
@madmandonna1Ай бұрын
@@grandtourerpt It's not bullshit at all. It's 6cm shorter than the Zoe and head room in that isn't great (I have one, my 6 foot 2 friend struggles). The entire car is bult on top of the battery, if they make it shorter you have no head room. It's 4cm taller than the mini, it's not big at all. The Tesla Model 3 for instance is slightly shorter in height (6cm to be precise) because the batteries are under the passengers seat, not under the whole car.

What would be good to see is a group test of all the new small electric cars compared to the BMW i3 which many consider to be the best of the original crop of small city cars. Obviously the range in the i3 will be a limiting factor but, that aside are the new car significantly better than the original benchmark small electric small car.

price wise it is one of the best cars, but the range should do better. No parking is very odd design choice
@anthonybrown48742 ай бұрын
I kind of agree that if the wind noise is an isdue given the development resources available its an own goal, quirkiness is fine some things just take time to get used to and appreciate. Personally a bit disappointed at the price point I'm sure there are plenty will think it's a bargain and it might be compared to top spec 208s but the public are looking at approaching price parity with small petrol hatch backs though the likes of Ford shooting themselves in the foot dropping their cars might help. 10 years of development required before we say these are petrol equivalents though if China is allowed to export their largesse of production things might change though some European automakers might cease to be in the face of aggressive dominating pricing.

I'm a little disappointed that you can't have the fun colors on the base spec car, colours that no doubt you have to pay a premium for after paying a hefty premium for stuff that should be standard fit in modern cars like heated seats. MG did the same with the MG4, in which I went for the Trophy in orange and has proven to be the most deeply frustrating car I have ever owned. I hate to be nostalgic about car specs but I really miss the days when you could order a basic car with only the bits you wanted. On the plus side the bit about being able to save the safety features you want on and off is a brilliant idea especially with daft additions like speed limiters being enforced on new cars. I am going to have a look at the R5 as it will if it works for me be the car that stops me reverting to petrol.

Loverly thing, but if you aren't offering a glass roof and you are putting decals on the roof, why not bung some solar up there? Ok, it's not going to recharge the battery but it could be used to keep the car cool while you do some shopping. As for the wheel size, it feels like someone said merde! what about the Alpine version that will cost thousands more? We can't offer 19/20 wheels because people will pay 1000's more for that
