I wasn’t really sure I wanted to try out the Maverick because its not really my style of truck, but as they say there’s a butt for every seat, and maybe this is the perfect beginner, commuter, parts runner, or old man truck for one of you. It’s not my style, but maybe it will be some day.

I’ve got one and love it. I’ve owned all the way up to an f450 and now I’m in this. Me and my gf took it on a trip to Colorado Springs and it did great on the trails out there. Definitely not anywhere close to jeep levels of performance but great for most people (especially since we got close to 30 mpgs on the close to 2000 miles we did)

We own a 1st gen extended cab 4x4 v6 Tacoma and now my wife has one of these. AWD FX4 XLT with the turbo. This is basically a Subaru with a bed. I know as I also own a Forester XT. You have to understand what you are buying, and what you are going to use it for. My wife can run to Home Depot or Lowe’s and pick up stuff for her projects without worrying about protecting the interior. Comfortable, modern bells and whistles, and excellent fuel economy. She just went camping with this and it carried her and passengers with their gear no problem. Not as capable off road as the Taco for sure, but it does what she needs it to do. Living in suburbia as we do, we actually use it for more “truck” activities than the guys who roll around in showroom clean Raptors and Rebels.
@ZACH_95_
@ZACH_95_ Жыл бұрын
Well yeah people buying those raptors and rebels aren’t using them for that shit. People are buying them to race light to light and drive like an idiot on the highways with. People aren’t doing that with the maverick but are actually using it for it’s intended use.

This looks like the perfect fleet vehicle for landscaping crews. Fit at least four, fill the bed with fuel cans and small tools, pull a small trailer if necessary, and reserve the real trucks for bigger jobs that require it. I can also see my wife loving this for picking up plants, bags of potting mix, etc. *Edit - Fred, I forgot to add, I love the spot on vision of a modern day Ranchero sport utility vehicle.

To me this is the successor to the Ranger, and all the truck most people who drive trucks really need. This probably won't thrive on abuse and neglect like the old Rangers do, but the new Ranger is too big to have the same utility as the old ones.

Auto-hold is for bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic. It works the way you describe it but it's main use is that you don't have to constantly hold the brake pedal when stuck in traffic. This needs to be turned off at automatic car washes or alarms will sound and people will point and laugh at you :) IMHO typical 1/2 ton trucks and even the mid-size trucks have a "reach-over" height that is too tall. The mini-trucks like this make it easy to reach into the bed. Our perfect example of why this would be for us is the run to get potting soil and annuals for the garden. We could easily reach into the bed versus climbing into the bed. I love Fred's every guy impressions, there's tons of reviewers that pile on the specifications ad nauseum, Fred just lays out how it is for him and as such most of us. I think that the hybrid version will become the new small delivery and auto-parts delivery vehicle of choice. If Ford can produce enough of them. Right now the order banks close really fast for these as they are pre-selling every one of them.
@oambrosia
@oambrosia Жыл бұрын
Agreed on the reach-over height. My dad's '89 Toyota was great because it was so easy to get stuff out of the bed. Even at 6' tall I need to climb into the bed of new trucks to get stuff.
@RyTrapp0
@RyTrapp0 Жыл бұрын
Remember when 'reach over height' used to be something that was always brought up in truck reviews? lol, those days are SO far gone. Frankly, it's pretty wild to me that modern pickups are so huge. And, being a whopping 5'5, it makes them a major pain in the ass too, especially 3/4 ton and bigger.

My parents had matching 1974 Ford Mavericks which were a 2 or 4 door sedan. I don't understand why they resurrected that name for a pick up truck, and then called the 4 door Mach E a Mustang. It's like they've forgotten their history! I feel the Mach E should have been given the Maverick name and this truck should have been called something else, just my two cents.

One thing I can't get over these days, and this isn't exclusive to Ford, is the ridiculous and seemingly arbitrary "exclusions" they have in place when choosing options. For example, with this Maverick, the Tremor package, which adds gold accents to the grill, wheels, and tow hooks, cannot be chosen with the color you have here. Of the 11 colors offered for the Maverick, the Tremor package is available on all but 4. Why can't I have gold accents on a gold truck? Like I said, it's not exclusive to Ford. You'll find the same thing with Chevy and Ram. IMO, that is simply overthought, unnecessary, nonsensical bullshit that only serves to add frustration to the already tedious process of buying a vehicle.

4XFred, I appreciate and agree with your perspective on unnecessary tech! Why can’t you just use your other foot to hold the brake?! Why do we “need” more tech when people can’t drive anyway? I make fun of people that can’t parallel park, back a trailer, or drive a stick shift. Driver “aids” are one more example of less attention to driving and the world around us.

I just miss full frame rwd mini trucks that I used to get second hand from a convenience store chain. My hopes 20 years ago were to get to where I could buy a new one, but they stopped making rwd trucks for people who aren't compensating for anatomical inadequacies by maxing out their debt load. If they still made the trucks I want I could walk into a dealership with cash to buy it. But they can make more money off of people with no money so those of us with money get stuck with a front wheel drive minivan with the back chopped off.

This is a through back to the first Ranger. It was for young people going to the beach or skiing. Or for people that gardened and cared for their lawn. They might need bags of dirt, rocks or compost and didn't want it in their tunk and could hose it clean. It is hard for full size truck people to understand. Look at it as you need to go 150 miles to pick up an engine and gas is $5-6 per gallon. Not to mention if your rig is a bit of a spine pounder and you are going to take the lady with you. Clean seats with all the creature comforts to make her happy.

conceptually i am a fan of the maverick, a cool little efficient trucklet for those that want a little hauler to camp, ski, hike, what ever with. there are inexpensive lift kits for these that imo make them what they should be and look like. and with a lift and bigger tires and a mid height bed rack and the oh so popular roof top tent you would have a cool little overlander. that being said i wouldn't trade my one ton crew cab or trail jeep or my grandpa comfortable infinity M35.

Good video but be more familiar with all the things it has and can do. The bed has various adaptions (you weren't familiar with) so that YOU CAN HAUL 10+ sheets of 4x8 plywood. You can also configure the bed to have multi-levels for various cargo, and can also convert the bed into horizontal dividing sections, ALL OF THIS by simply using common 2x4 or 2x6 boards (and lowering the tailgate to it's halfway position when hauling 4x8 sheets of plywood, which I have done with my 22 Maverick XLT (which also has the Luxury and FX4 packages). I have also loaded thirty, 2-cubic ft. bags of wet mulch (approximately 1,300 lbs.) and hauled them over 100 miles with NO issues, AND I got 28.7 mpg doing it. The Maverick is a VERY capable, quiet and comfortable small truck with an incredibly well designed interior and bed. Notes: 1. When Auto Hold is engaged, when you're stopped at a light, stop sign, on a hill or on the flat, it will prevent the truck from moving BACK OR FORWARD. 2. You're correct that it's NOT a F-150, a Ranger, or a Gladiator. But it doesn't pretend to be, nor was it designed to be. And if you stick with the XL or XLT, you'll save anywhere from $15,000-50,000+ bucks in initial purchase AND more dollars EVERYDAY when you drive it compared to the others mentioned.

Fred, you should do a lot more homework to get to know this awesome little truck before making a video. Learn about all the buttons and controls, and what they actually do, and why. Then about how the flex-bed can be figured in countless ways, to include the three position tailgate just to name a few. Examples: 1. You guessed it might haul "ten sheets of plywood". Actually, it will haul 17-18 sheets of 3/4" plywood laying flat, with tailgate in middle position. 2. Sleep in the bed in fetal position? Just drop the tailgate and you have six foot bed to sleep, stretched out. 3. Auto-Hold is best used for when you're sitting at long lights (or on hills) in heavy stop and go traffic. 4. Why the big gap by interior door grab handles? Yeah, they're for 1-ltr bottles (another well thought out and clever design). 5. "The Maverick is an "old person" truck? Really? It has 10+ times the potential market of buyers than the cool, but limited BIG and BURLY trucks for hard-core off-road, rock-climbing, cliff-scaling market of buyers. 6. You do know that it has a nice backup camera? I noticed that you did not use it. Are you just not used to it or do you not trust it? 7. After doing your homework you'd soon come to realize the Maverick's real capabilities. Another couple of examples: Take it's 1.500 lb payload (it equals that of a full size Dodge 1500). And regarding it's AWD Intelligent System it can do a lot more than drive down gravel roads. 8. Hitting on it because it can't do what a F-150, Gladiator, or Ranger can do is way off base. The Maverick wasn't designed and built to do that. And it makes NO CLAIM to do that. But what it was designed to do, it does it exceptionally well in all areas. 9. You got honest at the end with who should buy the Maverick and who should buy a standard gas-guzzler rig. Oh, after loading the tires, you could have raised the tailgate to it's middle position for added security. 10. And finally, the mighty Maverick is NOT an OLD MAN'S truck. The Maverick is carefully thought out and well designed truck for the masses of ALL ages, and unlike ANY other truck, it's loaded with unique features. It's a truck for those looking for a LOW price, that delivers great MPG, has remarkable capabilities, and is quiet, comfortable and comes in a handsome package. Few could ask for anything more. I agree with you, that Cyber Orange Metallic is an awesome color.

Just look at how popular CUV's (compact utility vehicle) are.... everything from Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Toyota RAV4, Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape, etc.. and the Maverick is built to fit in, except with a pickup bed instead of cargo area (same as the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Honda Ridgeline are doing). My (nearly) stock Jeep Wrangler is overkill for the off-roading I do... I'd rather drive 100 miles of forest roads or desert trails here in Arizona than 5 miles of rock crawling or mud bogging. I'm also a tech/safety nerd, so the adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, wireless phone charging, etc. is more intriguing to me while commuting or long distance vacation traveling than what the breakover angle specs are for off-road. Something else to think about; My Jeep offers 2Hi, 4Hi or 4Lo, but no AWD traction on the road/highway for when it's raining or snowing. Many of the CUV's, including the Maverick, offer AWD for better traction while driving/braking in all weather. I like the Maverick (and the Santa Cruz and Ridgeline), and I like looking forward soon to joining the ROMEO club - Real Old Men Eating Out, and using one of these compact rigs to drive to a diner to enjoy breakfast and tell lies about the good old days, while sharing recent camping and out of state vacation trips taken in them. Always enjoy your company and videos, Fred. Peace and cheers! Pete - KI7LIL

A case for the Maverick: My wife should be getting an XLT (mid trim) Maverick with moonroof only-option in about a week. Almost $27K after destination, before tax and trade. Ten grand extra for goodies doesn't make much sense for us in what is supposed to be an affordable vehicle. We went from two cars and a pickup to one car and a pickup a couple years ago, because our daughter-in-law needed a car, and we sold it to her cheap. This has left my wife driving an F150, regular cab, 2wd for part-time work nearby and errand running. I have a long commute, so me driving a 24.5 mpg vehicle for a commute doesn't make much sense. December 2020, I traded/purchased new and drive a Mitsubishi Mirage 3 cylinder, 5 spd for $11,820 (before trade and tax), and I average over 49 mpg year around; uses three qts of oil on an oil change; easy to work on; 400 mile range; cheap to maintain; regular gasoline; indirect injection; perfect for my 58 mile round trip rural commute that is 45-65 mph speed limits along the route. My wife had her second hip replacement and we needed to get her a lower and more practical vehicle for daily driving. Used car prices were out the roof high at the time we were considering adding to our fleet, because we want to keep a truck for our needs. So then we came upon this Maverick idea; trade the F150 and get a new Maverick, thereby keeping a truck; albeit a 2' shorter bed, but with back seats and just all around more practicality, without going back to three vehicles for about the same price as adding a used vehicle. We ordered the Maverick in September. Ford completely sold out what they can produce for 2023 model year in just 6 days, and then they closed down ordering. We got our order in on the first full day allowed. The model we ordered has an estimated 35 mpg combined rating and front drive only. It's a hybrid with proven reliability going back to 2012 in a Fusion. We were expecting an 8-12 month wait but they got ours built in about 3 mos. You said a couple things that I'd challenge: The Maverick can easily haul ten pieces of plywood via a cut piece of 2x6 placed in the slot of the fendor wells and the tailgate moved to the 1/2 up position (up to 500 pound capacity on the tailgate in that position). You implied the compact truck had very low utility. For towing, I would agree, but the 1,500 payload beats some high end model full size with crew cabs and off road packages. Some luxury models, payload drops into the 1300s. It's also worth pointing out that crew cab standard bed full size trucks are around 5' 7" beds and mid size are 5'. I'm not suggesting that the Maverick is a heavy work truck, but neither is many full size trucks; especially the expensive ones that many ppl choose to purchase and drive to show off their wealth and to pretend to need off road capability.

I'm beginning to be an old guy at 54. I still need a commuter vehicle, and looking to replace my "99 Honda CRV that's been my primary driver for 355,000 miles. The transmission just bit the dust, and I am currently driving my Suburban, which is great but not exactly en efficient commuter. It's primary duty is towing my boat and my camper. The Maverick really piques my interest. It provides everything the CRV has, plus better mileage, better features, better AWD system, and a bed that comes in handy for dump runs and other weekend chores. I was looking at the Ridgeline originally, but this fits my need better.

In fact ( i did ) you can put plywoods sheets and gyps sheets its been tought for that when puting the tailgate at 45 degree with purposed second anchor points so it s right at the hights of the back wheels hub in the bed and the sheets are flat horizontal. I have since almost a year now a blue XLT, Group XLT, FX4 package and i love it.... so pratical , fuel economy is very good, its just well tought and i think Ford hit a vehicule segment having people like me who live in the woods , carry sometimes stuff but dont want a full size or Ranger and it handles like a suv...very cool. And for THE DOOR HANDLE lol ...its just another thing well thought of...there is a gap for a bigger bottle !...not weerd...just well thought of. This truck will revive the mini truck scene...lots of mods and dropped mavericks are already been seens. It s just ...enough...a friend said to me : what are you gone haul with that ..well i dont give a shit...I DONT HAUL. And if you need to have a full size to feel mainly....geee go ahead. This is Ford's new Focus since they don't build cars anymore except the Mustang. The main customer for this car, especially the hybrid, are people cross shopping the Civic, Elantra, or VW Golf. This is for people who wouldn't normally consider a truck but the economy and utility of this vehicle makes them consider it. These people wouldn't consider a $45K Ridgeline as an alternative. I don't see many people making this point.

Im an old guy and just put an order in for a 2024 when they come out. Ive had truck all my life. My first vehicle I owned was a truck when I was 16. Im current driving an F-250 powerstroke. But lets be honest, how much truck does the average homeowner need? My F-250 is overkill for 99% of what I do every day. This truck seems to fit the everyday truck owner's needs. If you need to tow a trailer or a load of construction material, this isnt your truck.

Fred I don't know if anybody addressed this below and I'm not going to read 229 comments LOL. AUTO HOLD is simply keeping the brake on at any stop sign or stop light. So you don't have to sit at a long red light with your foot on the brake. That is all :)

I think this is the "everyman" truck car thing really.. For the average user with the towing package, how much more do you need? 1500 payload / 4000 towing is more than enough once you tell the marketing department to shut the hell up. I think whining about the maverick is about on the same plane as whining about not getting a v8 anymore in a tundra, or buying a wrangler and 10k worth of offroad crap bolted to it without a single scratch or mile offroad. ill take the modest 4x4 ability in trade for good fuel economy in a daily for sure. So that being said I'd buy the XLT for 28k and a $10 fx4 sticker from the parts department.

I have a late model Ford product I purchased new 5 yrs ago, though it’s better built than any GM or Chrysler product, I’m anxiously waiting for the best financial time for me to trade it in on a Toyota product. It was my 1st Ford product and it will be my last. My gut said buy a Toyota or Honda but Ford won because of the 5.0. It won’t happen again. Good luck people. Fords are overpriced, overrated and under built.

I'm buying one at 33, picking up next week. I have a Jeep for all of my off-road needs, and it was also for all of my atv hauling needs. I have a 50 mile round trip drive for work. Finally getting rid of my little Hyundai beater. This truck gets good enough mileage to commute, and will give my old tj a break from hauling. Need something bigger, I feel the parents.

Well hell truck buddy.. It's not a gas guzzling 24 inch lifted truck to go get groceries in. A pickup truck that gets 25 mpg and 50 mpg hybrid for the average handy man or woman with all those nifty designed in water bottle holders just might have a pretty good market considering a person can buy 2 or 3 of these for the price of the F150. I wonder how many we would see on the road if Ford had the order line open for these trucks and could make as many as the F150. For a retired handy man myself I have one and it is great. I have my second one on order for 2023.

I'm relatively excited about the Maverick.....but not for me. I see myself buying a used one in 13 years for my kid when she starts driving. Could be a pretty fun first vehicle. And in 13 years the Maverick will be 13 years old and cheap.

So a new unibody ranchero.. bringing the maverick name back from the dead. Bringing the Australian el Camino to the market. (I know just can’t think of anything but “yurt” instead of what they call it) yea the basic 21st century sport utility. Sorry just not my style. Much rather analog manual and no diver assist other than fuel injection

While it is a nice truck it is not my thing. If I was going to spend $37k I would buy a Tacoma 4x4 instead. (Can get the TRD Sport with 6 speed manual for same price and 5 ft bed). To each their own.

I like Auto hold. It keeps the vehicle stopped while in gear until you depress the gas pedal again. Not just to keep it from rolling backwards, but to keep from moving forward also. I was hit from behind in my 3 week old car by a lady who stopped 25 feet behind me at a stop light, then proceeded to start texting on her phone. I actually saw her in my rear view put her head down and immediately started rolling forward slowly and never looked up. I hit my brake lights repeatedly trying to get her attention but didn't think to hit my horn. She only scratched up my rear painted bumper cover. But it still was $1200 worth of damage on my brand new car.

I own a landscaping company and am looking to save some fuel not driving a tundra or 2500 to talk to customers or check on crews but still able to bring them cans of gas or tow a mower on a small trailer if I need to. When they start selling for around MSRP I'll probably pick one up....and tune it to make me feel better about it 😆

The fact that is hauls dirt bikes to and from the trails is perfect for me. Easy loading and unloading too because of the low bed height makes it even more likable for motorcycle guys. Weather you're going to the track or the trail , its a really good choice.
