Great first practice, Rasmus. Thumbs up. You will be VERY EXCITED the first time you achieve an ember and then FIRE. I've done it a few times, but am not at all proficient. There are many folks in the bushcraft community who are really good it and I'm sure you'll recieve many helpful tips.. Greetings, Ken

Hey Rasmus, it's been a long while! You were always really supportive on my early videos, specifically the first bowdrill video I ever did almost 10 years ago. I think I was maybe 15 at the time, practicing skills in my back yard in Northern BC, Canada. I just went back and watched it again myself, and saw your nice comments. I do hope you're doing well these days my friend! -Reno

Landed here from Joe Robinet. Not to be condescending but it is nice to see a young man interested in these skills. Keep trying and you'll be an expert.

Good job bro! :) Took me ages to grasp the bow drill but now i'm happy to say I am quite good at it, just keep practising mate and you'll be doing it with ease soon! I would recommend using a smaller bow with paracord, I think you are making it harder for yourself by using that large bow ;) Anyway, look forward to seeing some updates of you doing this brother, take care! Bill

Good job man, the first time i tried a hand drill i got an ember but only lasted like 3 seconds. Tho i didnt take the time to gather proper wood and such. Great job and thanks for sharing.

Excellent 1st attempts. Better than my 1st attempts. You're on the right track. With a little practice, you'll get this down in no time. Put your foot closer to the spindle (1" (2cm) or so). Brace your wrist against your shin for stability & control. Try to get smooth bowing action, apply downward pressure, balance speed with pressure. Usually takes less than a minute of bowing to get an ember. Some names: bearing-block, hand-hold, pressure-block, palm board, top rock, socket, thunderhead, etc...

Hi Rasmus, I liked you video. I have some tips for you. Use a smaller bow for more controle and look for a natural bent in your bow. Don't put to much pressure on the rope, because that's why the spindel jumps out of the block. Another way to get more control over the motion is to let the spindel roll angainst your shoe. It's really good to see a young guy like you that's into this way of firemaking. Keep up the good work!

Great video, but if you get that chirping noise it usually means you are going too fast or slow, too light or too hard, so what I do is Adjust and experiment, like go a little harder, or softer, until you get a low pitched squeal. that means you have got it. Also, put your foot closer to the notch. It helps with keeping that coal in place. Great job, and great to see more younger people bushcrafting on YT. have a great day. -TMD

My son was doing this earlier in the year, the weather was a bit damp but he did get it going in part but had no dry tinder. Its practice and rhythm that is the key I think. Nice one!

Great job. I'd suggest a smaller bow and thicker cord around the spindle. Sometimes you'll get an ember quick, other times, you want to pull your hair out in frustration.

The wood you use makes a huge difference, willow is one of the best. Make a smaller bow that gives you more control and thicker cord and youl be more likely to get an ember. Great 1st try, normally practice makes perfect.... but in the case of the bow drill that isnt true, sometimes it just doesn't happen. A T B, L N T, Ken

Hey Rasmus getting smoke from a friction fire is not that hard to get, but a useful ember is much harder. Last year i was trying hard to make a bowdrill work, after 10+ trials i finally got an ember and a fire from that. I used Hazel on Hazel, since that was available, works good for me, after you got the hang out of this method. greeting oakleafNL

Nice flat bow. I don't know if you have limpets over there but I've seen some uk bushcrafters use 2 limpet shells to hold the spindle down.

Hej Rasmus.

Pretty good result considering the fact that you used a bow which is ment to shoot with and therefore too flexible. Take care brother!
