For city dwellers like me, this could easily be two bikes in one. All-electric mode for the daily commute, hybrid sport mode for the weekend rides. Hopefully future hybrid bikes will look a little better-proportioned and regain left-foot shift levers so we can at least pretend it's a normal motorcycle transmission with a quickshifter.

This is a good start imo. The seamless switching from engine to electric is possible as the electrically assisted acceleration before the engine turns on from full stop is there. Maybe Kawasaki still hasn't added that part as it may not be seamless enough to give the rider some confidence on switching (could be proper gearing/shifting). And hopefully it's just a firmware update if they find a way on that part.

In an age of refinement not invention (eg Panigale bike engine has only ever evolved - well over a decade now) I give Congratulations to Kawasaki. There will be doubters and people bashing this bike, but the industry is tough and I applaud any manufacturer willing to put mental benchmarks down like this bike. Kawasaki aren't trying to replace your bike or claim this to be better than anything else. Look at their new H2. They are innovators. Yeah it's crazy expensive. It's a whole new market they've opened up, rattling the cage of other manufacturers to say wake the fuck up, we can sling out zx10, H2, 125, tourers and strong hybrids and soon , hydrogen.

Well said. I'm sure Kawasaki knows this isn't going to be a sales leader, especially in the United States, and yes it is heavy and complicated. But this is a bike for people who either live in city centers with emissions restrictions (not me) or are interested in new tech and unique bikes (definitely me). Also while the price currently is high there's no doubt that here in the states there will be heavy discounts on this bike over the winter, as I'll be surprised if they sell more than a handful. At that point I'll buy one and add it to my list of quirky bikes lol. I do wonder on the longevity of that relatively little 48 volt battery running through endless cycles of charging and recharging with it being air cooled. I suppose a battery of that size (seems like around 1.4kw) could be built fairly easily as long as you take the electronics/bms/etc off of the old pack and replace the cells. I was surprised that the bike allowed you to access the eboost as much as it did though, so maybe the thermal management is better than thought.

I like the idea but if you have to come to a full stop to switch to electric only and back, that would annoy the living hell out of me. Having to come to a full stop to switch in and out of full electric mode is really a poor design. I guess it's ok if you spend a long time in a city (but then I guess the battery range must not be very big), but you'll end up not using it when you're just crossing a town if it's only a few kilometres long, while benefitting from the noise reduction would have been great in that situation. Anyway, thanks for this honest short review.

That's actually a great point. For cars, the tire noise outweighs engine noise at moderate city speeds, so an electric or an ICU are almost the same noise level for pedestrians. But for bikes, having the option to shut off the ICU mid-ride when you're going through a habitated area should bring immense noise benefits. Tire noise is basically irrelevant in comaprison

I would like it other way around. Roughly 35kW electric traction motor + battery for +/- 100km of autonomy and small, lets say 125cc, engine as a generator / range entender only. And please in maxi scooter format...

not in person, this is bike is getting A TON of help from the microphone... it is just another 180º crank bike...

No, it doesn't. 180 degree parallel twins never sound good. They sound like souped up lawnmowers. The only reason I tolerate the Ninja 500 is because it's so light and cheap.

Hybrid motorcycles are smart. Batteries need to get smaller and lighter for full electric motorcycles to really take off.

The parallel hybrid approach gives more of the sound and feel of a traditional motorcycle. What’s going to fry our brains is riding series hybrids where the engine is not part of the drivetrain, but just a generator for a more powerful electric motor.

interesting thought indeed

That’s like a hybrid corolla. Its not great but it gets the job done. Imho hybrid systems has a better future than the electrics. Its good to see hybrid bikes

it's definitely more appealing but I don't know if it's the right way to go, we'll see

If the bike could go at least 100 in all electric and could last for atleast 20 KM. Then you would have a winner. Make the shifting the same as with any other bike and it would be great

Motorsound better than most of the actual bikes WTF 😂🙈 Not as bad as I thought. Interesting but still too expensive. And really goes like hell oO?!

for a bike with an engine this small it indeed goes quick
