Fast forward 20 years electric cars are some of the fastest and most practical cars on the road now!
@LucasFernandez-fk8se3 жыл бұрын
no. no they arent. We need 500-1000 mile range for them to be as or more practical then a gas car. Gas cars have 300-500 mile ranges usually but can be instantly refilled. Where as if you were to take a road trip in an electric car then it would be a nightmare on anything less then 1000 miles of range. But when we finally get to 1000 miles of range they will be able to cover what a days worth of freeway driving can cover which means they will finally be perfect.

Electric cars were very popular between the 1890s and 1920, actually in 1900 40% of all cars on the road were electric. So no, electric cars were not first made in the 50s, and the first production electric cars were over 100 years before the EV1. If you couldn't even get that part right, why should I believe anything you say about anything?
@mattpackwood67374 жыл бұрын
Can we get history straight please. The original EV1 batteries were lead-acid. In 1994, General Motors acquired a controlling interest in Ovonic's battery development and manufacturing, including patents controlling the manufacturing of large nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. From 1998 the EV1 was produced with NiMH batteries. On October 10, 2000, Texaco announced the purchase of General Motors' share in GM Ovonics. Then Chevron announced its acquisition of Texaco six days later. By 2002, 1,117 EV1s had been produced, although production had ended in 1999, when GM shut down the EV1 assembly line. All of them were leased, not sold. In November 2003, GM began reclaiming all the cars which were then crushed. About 40 were donated to museums and educational institution but with the drivetrain and batteries removed and legal restrictions not allowing them on the public roads. Chevron which now held the patent for large NiMH battery packs declined to allow anyone to manufacture these batteries. Chevron killed the electric car but GM allowed this to happen by selling their shares of Ovonics to Texaco which later became part of Chevron.

First electric car that went into production (true production) was the baker motor vehicle they built cars in 1899 to 1914 they it merged with Detroit electric they ran from 1907 to 2008 but Thomas Parker his car company the Elwell - Parker company in London was the first electric production car in 1884 to 1887. But Parker cars was prototypes. So how did gm a car company that started in 1909 build the first electric car for the people? Gm their first electric car is on the moon. So they got the first car in space before Tesla by 47 years.

For a good while, I couldn't tell if this was a silly and sarcastic joke, but Howard Stableford just has that tone. its fascinating just how competent the ev1 was, though its mostly for show because a big reason it could only be lease was because those batteries wore out, by modern standards, very quickly. but seriously 3 hours to fully charge the car is nothing and 100miles in 97 is insane
@paulgracey46976 жыл бұрын
The competency of the EV-1 came about because GM did not design its prototype, the "Impact". It was designed by Aerovironment Corp. in California, with very good aerodynamics. That AC induction motor design was copied by GM's Delco division and later got sold to Tesla who, because they were not skilled in understanding the simple analog circuitry, completely revised it with digital to analog conversion methods for their car. The Impact's electronics could reconfigure the motor windings and its circuitry in such a way as to be able to charge from any AC source. Tesla Then had to add a separate charging circuit capable of just two standard voltages found world wide, and adding even more circuitry for the Direct DC fast charging we expect today. Although the battery for the Impact and the early version of the EV-1 was Lead-Acid, the later EV-1 used Nickel Metal Hydride which the (paddle charged) Toyota RAV-4 EV also used. Some of those are still on the road, those batteries are so robust. Too bad that an oil company bought the patent rights. The paddle charging system designed by the company I worked for, Hughes Aircraft, then a division of GM, was also getting better and would have been much faster by now. It was and is totally unnecessary though as even then it was possible to send low voltage signals to insure the car was connected properly before the wall charge port would energize the high charging voltage.

Would be nice to see this car revived using today's technology. It has great potential. But battery technology still needs much more research. 1000km range should be the norm, not 100km.

20 years later, the batteries are still huge but companies arenT' too stupid to build a plattform that can propperly fit them, also fastcharging has made long trips possible, both of these things would have been possible 20 years ago, although be it not as refined. The EV1 failed because GM and the others *wanted* EVs to fail, not because of the technology.

Lots has changed. This car had lead acid batteries similar to normal car batteries. Had a 90 Mile range. The second generation had NiMh batteries with 125 mile range. Lithium In cars came about because the patent holders of the NiMh battery never sold any to use in cars. Alan Coconni of AC propulsion used lithium laptop batteries instead after the EV-1 s were crushed. His design is underlying basis for Tesla fleet.

Boy it's amazing how bias these programs where back then trying to down play how successful these cars would have been if GM would have just SOLD them when people placed an order for one instead of only making a few hundred of them over 4 years and only leasing them. Think about it when dodge partnered with cummins to make the first domestic pickup truck with a industrial grade diesel engine engine they didn't expect to sell more then 10,000 trucks for the 1989 model year well they ended up getting orders for almost double that and had to stop taking orders because the demand was so great they couldn't make them fast enough. Now imagine dodge saying "we'll we just aren't getting the response we thought we would the consumer just doesn't want a cummins powered dodge pickup truck lets cancel all orders and the trucks we did make just take them out to the middle of the desert and crush them all." Use your heads people if a company can make money off of use they are going to do it so that only means one thing someone offered more money then GM could have made off of these cars. Don't fall for this crap it's all propaganda.
