@@thepeddle what major technological advances have been brought to us in small trucks in the last 30 years? It's a simple format that works. Increasing cost and complexity just for the sake of it is absurd. That's how you get $75,000 trucks which there are plenty of if you want. Frontiers and Tacoma's enjoy loyal followings because long term build means sorted out issues, low maintenance costs, and the manufacturer not making your truck yesterday's news every 3 years. Your analogies make no sense. All those items were replaced by completely different form factors. Today's small trucks are identical in form factor to what they have always been, albeit 4 door models being commonplace

Because the Daimler Benz 9 speed will have better performance and MPG's. All OEMs have pressure to meet Cafe goals. And the MT probably only represented 1 percent on the old D40. @percussion444 жыл бұрын
@@HiPlains1 the DB 9speed will be (is) an unreliable overly complex piece of Teutonic rubbish. The cost of transmission rebuilds in vehicles so equipped makes them essential disposable. One dealer I spoke with said they are not rebuild-able just have to replace..10k $. We are now in the age where vehicles that cost 40/50/60 thousand dollars are essentially glorified kleenex. Blow once and scrap it. Agreed the no manual is economic decision, due to low consumer uptake. North Americans are lazy, in the UK most vehicles remain manual I understand. I doubt developing a new MT would be costly. They have a MT, bolt it on. Whats costly is re-jigging an assembly line to produce different configs of the vehicle. Agree Nissan being cash strapped they are following the least costly max profit approach to appeal to the absolutely generic consumer. Maybe this will save them, who knows. I had the old Frontier (4.0L MT) 2008 to 2014, traded for a Ram (6spd 65RE) to pull a boat. I still liked Frontier and considered getting another. I wont look at a truck with a 9 spd. Full Stop.

ThomperBeThompin - there's one improvement they're yet to put on Tacos: the DUAL-INJECTED (port + direct) version of the NA-3.5L V6 already available in FWD apps, like the Camry and Avalon (+ their Lexus equivalents). That would up the ante to 305-310hp levels, like in the Colorado / Canyon (already has this FI system on their NA-3.6L high Content V6). Also brace yourselves as I believe this "Old Skool" Frontier has "the heart of Mrs. Z", as I believe Nissan will use a tuned (closer to 350hp in NA and 425-450 in T guise) version of this same 3.8L in the 380Z (N/A) and 400Z (T) rather than Infiniti's 3.0L, as I would figured before...

@@mrl390 - it does (didn't checked before), but wonder then why the Colorado / Canyon NA-3.6L LGZ V6, which has a similar fuel injection system to the D4-S has quite a bit more output (308 vs. 278hp or close to +10%, which is significant). IMHO the majority of reviewers seem to think the Taco is TOUGHER (some people from overseas may argue for the HiLux being even tougher, but doesn't have a gas V6 in their options list, just I4 TD's) while the GM's seem MORE REFINED.
@mrl3904 жыл бұрын
syxepop the power differences are probably attributed more to the design of the cylinder heads than the design of the fuel injection system. As for why toyota decided to use a detuned version of the 3.5 in the Tacoma’s, I’m sure they have a reason and it’s probably either related to how the power is delivered as well as longevity. Almost all automakers employ the same idea when they use a similar engine in cars vs trucks. Trucks need a flatter torque curve so they usually sacrifice some high end horsepower to achieve it. I do agree with you on the difference between the toyota and gm trucks. I actually bought a new Tacoma after years of GM trucks and I will say the Tacoma feels more like a tool compared to the more car like refinement of a Colorado or even a new Silverado. Given that the architecture of the toyota trucks is MUCH older than the GM trucks, that might play a part in that as well. I’m sure the next generation Tacoma will be much more refined as the Tacoma is going on 15 years of the same basic platform now.

First kudos on social distancing. It's so important. I'm not a fan of direct injection. I also prefer my truck engine to have more torque than hp. In fact that's pretty much my universal preference. I had a 2011 PRO4X. Great little truck. The week the powertrain warranty expired I installed a Hypertech tuner. It boosted the power numbers to 280hp/300tq. The tuner also removed the throttle plate restriction. It did require premium fuel after that, but the thing became a rocket. I outgrew the truck and sold it to my dad. He really wanted it. He loves it. I live at 6600' and the truck was fast. He lives at sea level and constantly comments on how fast the truck is. That 4 liter is a great engine. I can't imagine it being improved upon much exept maybe with mpg.

I've owned 2 Frontiers over the years, but my 2nd one (a 2017 Pro4x) had some issues, so I recently traded it on a 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-road, which I've been pretty disappointed in. It's definitely a reliable and rugged truck, but it's not refined. The transmission's ridiculous gear hunting and down shifting as well as quite heavy driveline vibrations in certain situations are all pretty annoying on a daily basis. Given the Tacoma's stellar reputation, I expected a much more refined truck overall. Even though I'm definitely keeping the Toyota long-term, I'm still curious about the next gen Frontier, just because I have so much experience with the current gen.
