A few points about this video (this is my Frontier): 1) $35,633 in August 2018 would have been $27,248 USD 2) Mileage is in litres per 100km. 13L/100km = 18.09MPG US, or 21.73MPG Imperial (Canada). 3) Locking rear diff ONLY available on Pro-4X and that was very important (see the TFL video going uphill vs a Taco, Canyon and Ridgeline). 4) I'll be happy top answer non-leading or argumentative questions, but please use a question mark (?) to make it easier spot actual questions. 5) For anyone thinking about doing one of these segments, this was a really cool experience. 6) I was mistaken in the total dealer dealer discount. It was about $1k WITH the better trade value vs the other Nissan dealer. But Smiths Falls Nissan was still super easy to deal with.

Nice job! I worked at Nissan and only saw the older trans cooler issues, and catalytic converter issues. I have an Xterra right now, former Tacoma owner. I've always wanted to do Sumo springs on the rear of a truck like yours with moderate towing. Have you looked at rear axle helper tools to keep the truck level but not ruining the ride?

I loved my frontier for the time i had it which was 2 years. it was a used 2006 4x4 model i got around 2016 although they are all the same lol. I changed trucks because I was reading too many bad things about the early models, leaking radiators in the automatic transmission fluid, bad timing chains , bad frames etc. After one of my ignition coils failed and broke one of my catalytic converters, I decided to go for a new truck. I was also starting to get rust where your stone chips are, above or around the plastic protector. The rust was behind the fender and starting to make spots on the outside. Everything else was rust free. I think most of those problems are resolved and you should be fine though. As a side note I would get 15L / 100km average on the highway 120km/h and sometimes 17L/100km in the winter time ( idling more ) with a bit of urban driving.

@@burwood69 do you have an xterra pro 4-x? I've always wanted one after they addressed the issues with the trans cooler issues, but haven't seen any good deals. I may get one with less than 70k miles or so but i really don't trust nissan quality with that many miles.

Respect to the gentleman. Knows what he needs very clearly. He hit the nail on the head when he said more torque than Horsepower. Thats what you need in a truck and the fact that its simple to maintain and is reliable.

I pretty much bought a pro-4x for the same reasons this guy did. I test drove the Colorado's and the Tacoma and actually almost bought each of those. But surprisingly ended up getting a pro 4x not only for the price value but also it's the better truck and the most reliable. I crossed off the Colorado because of all the issues with the 8-speed shuddering and torque converter failures. And crossed off at the tacoma because of the transmission which likes to shift early and search gears it's a piece of crap as well. Even though this only has five speed It's the Best Transmission in the segment. I crossed off the ranger because it iwill cost 10000 more for the same features.

@@HiPlains1 the toyota transmissions are genuinely the most bizarre experience I've had with a truck. I've been going up a hill on the highway and my truck will just be in neutral for what feels like at least a full second and then go to the wrong gear and have either no power or rev like crazy and then it'll jump to the right gear. I dont use cruise control because it seems I can control the acceleration to make that happen less.

Huge fan of Nissan reliability. My Father’s 2003 Frontier is at 220,000 miles and still rides super smooth. Only thing we’ve had to replace is a timing belt at about 180,000 miles. My father used to tow a trailer with it when he first bought the truck new and was working in carpet cleaning, then when he worked at Rhino Lining had it double lined. Grew up and learned to drive in that truck, definitely has a special place in the family and in our hearts.

210k on my 2005 Xterra, from Minnesota to Mississippi to California, and saw dirt everywhere in between. I did see the transmission issue at 60k, but the dealer hooked me up with taking half off because I had mentioned it before and they couldn't replicate it

I've had a 2018 for two years (though mine isn't the Pro 4X)...he's absolutely right about the steering wheel controls--they are laid out in a very sensible way, and are easier and more sensible to use than probably any other steering wheel button layout that I've seen. Also, comfort is terrific for a mid-size truck (my previous vehicle was a 2008 Ford Escape--and after a trip of 200 miles or so, I'd get out of that vehicle and feel like I'd been beaten up. No such thing happens in the Frontier, though). Have been extremely pleased with mine.

Nissan frontier= fully boxed Titan frame( ability to Titan swap suspension and V8) , Dana 44 rear locking diff, powerful V6 , rear disc brakes and great seating position. Toyota Tacoma= Cheap C channel frame, least powerful V6 , rear drum brakes, horrible seating position and Toyota tax.

@@itlogutube Tacoma is an old platform just as much as the Frontier. Sales don't always dictate how good a product is. Toyota sales comes from customer perception of reliability. Doesn't mean they're the best or most innovative. Take Apple for example. Lots of android phones offer just as much and even more features than iphone, but Apple is a way more popular brand and receive more word of mouth recommendations, despite Samsung, LG and Foxconn actually making the parts and hardware for apple products. Toyota is no doubt a good brand, but they're not without their flaws with arguably cause the most deaths when it comes to defective parts and recalls on their vehicles.

06 frontier got new 260,000 issues replaced radiator do to recall. One frond right spindle. Just replaced the shocks and struts for the second time. If you change the fluids and maintenance properly this truck will last 300,000. Still burns no oil. Never had a car last this long. Paint does peal.

Here is my 2 cents: My dad is a Nissan employee so I utilized an employee lease every year for the past 6 years. Only one of those years was a 2016 Titan. The rest were Frontiers. Of those Frontiers only 2 were SVs. I have had a leased Pro-4x for the past 3 trucks. I gotta say, I love the Frontier. It's a no BS truck that will get the job done. And the Pro-4x model gets you everything you need with the base package. If you want a roof rack, moonroof, heated side mirrors, leather seats, power adjustable seats then go for the Premium package. Me I didn't care for it. My dad is fixing to retire soon so I can no longer get an employee lease so....my first truck purchase a Frontier Pro-4x! I am so satisfied but I am definitely throwing a few mods in to increase power performance and fuel economy lol.

@@jonathanrockstar1 There are quite a few mods that you can do to raise your fuel economy. A bigger (Cold Air Intake) or even a performance filter (K&N) can help improve your MPG by a bit. An aftermarket exhaust can help with your fuel economy as it improves the exhausting capability of the vehicle. Aftermarket headers can help. And there are also intake manifold spacers that can help because it allows for more efficient combustion. Keep in mind though that the more weight you put on the truck, the harder you hit the gas, the more city miles you put on, bigger lift, bigger tires, etc. can impede the improvement of your fuel economy. On my truck, I have only put in a K&N air intake which has given me about 1-2 extra MPG. I plan on putting a Borla Cat-Back exhaust on which in conjunction with the K&N should improve my economy by an extra 1-2 mpg.

It seems the best way to deal with the paint issue from new, without going to the Line-X/Rhino Liner solution, is to install rock sliders. They should keep stones from hitting the fender flares. The bumper tips would probably need a patch of stone guard, or maybe just spray some Line-X on the tips only. Good luck with your purchase.

Good video. Perfect example of a truck owner who knows what he needs and doesn't feel the need to get a full size pickup to satisfy some sort of macho nonsense. Pickups are great but lots of people don't need a full size. I like the Frontier but I like the Ranger a bit more. That may be my next vehicle. I'll check out the new Tacoma but I've test-driven the 2018 model 3 times and I did not like it on any of those test drives.

Bought my 2019 Frontier in Ontario Canada as well. Super reliable truck with a crazy good bang for the buck value. Hard to beat. I like the older mid-2000s styling as well, but that's obviously subjective.

The paint job of my 2017 Frontier was suffering from driving on gravel just as yours is. Using touch-up paint I painted all the chips, and after they dried I carefully sanded them level with the original paint. Next I purchased some 14 mil 3M PPF (Paint Protective file, aka "Clear Bra"), and I applied it to the area under the doors (from the body side molding down - you truck doesn't have the moldings but it does have the indention where the molding would go), and remove the factory PPF from the fenders in front of the rear wheels and re-applied a much more generously sized one which covered all the paint chips I had repaired. I had to make my own patterns out of parchment paper, which I then translated to the PPF and cut them out and applied it to the vehicle. Anyways, that just my 2-cents on another option for you.

The Frontier with the SV package is the towing package. It comes factory with a trailer hitch receiver. The pro4x is the offloading package and it doesn't come with a hitch receiver due to giving you more clearance for offroad driving from the factory.

I would gladly do that. I went from a 115 HP 2-stroke bow rider/fishing boat to a 25 HP 4-stroke pontoon. That's quite a change. And the SylvanSport GO is one funky trailer. But they're a car and truck channel, so they might not get a lot of views. Their recent "Overland" trip video was at the low end of viewer numbers for any TFL video. Stephens boat review was even lower in viewer numbers. But, when they built the Range Rover with the roof top tent I was hoping we'd see more true overlanding videos. Take an off-road camper trailer up some of the rougher trails in Colorado and Utah to see how it manages. Go off grid for a weekend and show what it takes in the real world in terms of water, electricity, food storage, etc.

My 18 Pro4x had similar stone chip issues since I live on a dirt road. I purchased a big truck rubber mud flap from Princess Auto, cut it into 4 and bolted them to the OEM mudflaps. Does not look the best but will save the paint as well as my trailers from getting peppered by small rocks. Did the same mod to my 13 Tundra TRD since I had rust starting on the bottom of the rear doors from stone chips.

Great video! I have a 2016 Pro 4x and yes fuel economy is terrible but this truck will do everything you ask of it. You cant beat the bang for the buck in every regard. I now have Bf Goodrich's ko2s on it and that was the finishing touch. It's an old body style but best in class if you ask me.

This is a great review. I have a 2017 Pro 4X that I bought brand new. I love the truck. But the turning radius does suck. The truck I'm issued at my job is a 2016 F250 4x4 and it turns a lot tighter than my Nissan. The other thing I don't like is the arm rest. It sits way to low. As far as fuel mileage you can add a cold air intake kit. Not only does it get you better sound and a little more horsepower, it does give you a little better gas mileage.

I consistently see frontiers for sale that have well over 250k miles. And over 300k miles. Most top out at like 350k miles. Which is pretty impressive compared to most trucks which top out at 250k miles. Seems like a good little truck.

I absolutely LOVE my 2019 Pro-4X. The rock chipping does worry me though so I was looking at either a total rocker bed-liner spray or adding some protecting rock sliders with a profile that would protect the painted area as well...

Rock sliders should protect your fender flares as long as they're proud of the tire width. You'll still need to do something to protect the bumper tips.

Well for the most part most of the trucks in the mid-size are still body-on-frame thank God. But then you got the Honda Ridgeline which unfortunately keeps getting reviewed along with the rest which does not make sense. Ridgeline is unibody and has pathetic ground clearance.

I own a 15' Frontier SV with a few upgrades and love it. The good: it is good at many things. The Bad: plastic outdated interior, very low tech, turning radius. ..still an awesome truck (only if you get the V6 model).

Currently have 119k on my '15 Frontier SV 4x4, with a 3"/4" lift via Nisstec. Drive for Uber and Lyft on weekends, and regularly get compliments on it. Other than scheduled maintenance, its been very reliable.

EZ Fix/Rhino makes a clear adhesive protector that is very tough and is priced right. Auto paint and body stores sell it. Love my Frontier too, 2wd 4-cyl, king cab and automatic. Nice review.

The man knows a good truck when he bought this one! My 2010 Frontier had the same stone chip [problem,..so I had a Autobody Repair Shop paint on a colour matched rock guard coating all around the truck from lower edges up to about 18 inches. As much as I liked my Frontier, I just wish they'd update that 4.0 litre engine and transmission. Great video Stephen,..good job!

That thought of your's of more gears, is a step in the right direction. I really liked my Frontier, and if they do decide to improve it, as above, I'll be back in to the dealer very quickly. Haha,. I just had an idle thought,...this is .just as long as they DO NOT think of a CVT as a way to achieve this goal!

That is the only issue with mine. Not a deal breaker, but it could have been if I was a tradesman that was backing up into tight spaces all day. My wife's Rav 4 steering is 1000X tighter and far more responsive.

It's a real issue, my 17 had this problem, traded in for an 18 pro4x and immediately vinyl wrapped it, seems to be much better know, mines now lifted on 33s and the vinyl looks perfect with a two tone appearance

I had a 2018 Colorado and after a year I couldn't wait to get rid of that thing as I bought a 2019 Nissan Frontier SV. That 4.0 L V6 with a 5-speed transmission out pulls the Colorado any day. Yes, the Nissan Frontier is a little dated but that depends on the person's taste. when I bought my Nissan Frontier there was a $4,000 rebate from the manufacturer and $3,000 off from the dealer. Either though I only had the Colorado for a year they did pay off what I owed on without carrying anything negative over to the price of the Frontier.

Just came off of a 3,600 Mile road trip from Wisconsin to Idaho and back with my 2006 Frontier. I've owned it from new and this thing is just a great little truck. Nismo (now Pro4X) package with a bed cap. I take it off road, haul my fishing boat, bed top tenting in summer, everyday driver. The only issue is my kids keep growing now...so I'm going to need to get a larger Titan for the back seat capacity. The frontier has been the best vehicle I've ever owned hands down.

I have a 2018 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x as well. Doesnt have the roof rack, leather, or sunroof. I didn't care about none of those personally. I got the price down to $25,600 and got $3,000 for my trade in which out the door I paid $22,600 for mine. Brand new, not used. Great truck hands down. I thought about the traction boards if anyone is wondering. What I did was I had used tires on the side of the house I cut the side walls completely off and used a saw to cut the tread (which takes time due to the wires). I used 2x4s and screwed the tire tread to the wood (2x4s) and made my own traction boards. Costed me like $4 only because I had to go buy the wood at home depot but i had everything else. Just food for thought if anyone is wondering. Cheers! Update: I got my 2018 at the end of the year just before 2019 and obviously before the Ranger came out also. Dealership's do big discounts when they are trying to make room for the new model years to put on the dealers lot.

Had to repaint my Tacoma at 12 yrs ownership. Clearcoat failure despite waxing cleaning regular. 3 mil paintjobs will not last forever.

@@diemman70 Yes, I had unintended acceleration, which was fixed with a software update, that problem popped up at 74,000 miles, since the fix no trouble with that and am at 179,000 miles now.

I just bought a Frontier SL. I test drove all the models. The main reason I chose this truck is price and because I like the simplicity. No turbos, no all wheel drive, no lane assist etc. All this stuff is just more to fail down the road and at great expense I bet.

I love my tricked 2016 Pro-4x Frontier. It is even my daily driver. 15 MPG! It shreds in the dunes and crawls up mountains. I'm up to 120k with no problems. I've changed the tran fluid twice and I drive in the 1:1 ratio (O/D off) because my tires are larger than stock. If you can find a used Pro-4x I say pick one up but I'm not selling mine.

I bought my 2014 4x4 SV Frontier brand new with 107 miles on it. 7 years later, it has 72,000 miles and is still in perfect condition. The only thing wrong with it is my windshield cracked during a brutal winter storm a few years ago and I still have yet to fix it (it's along the bottom portion of the passenger side, so not a huge deal). I'm putting new tires and wheels on it in a few days, and I would like to get a couple tiny scratches buffed out soon. The interior looks brand new still. All in all, I love my truck. I paid 26,500 for it in 2014 and it's been worth every penny. I live in a very snowy climate and I needed something simple for work that would handle the snow. It's a beast in the snow. Really fun to drive. I think I'm officially a Frontier only type of guy now.

I agree about the paint issue I live in Barrie and worked in Sudbury where I purchased my 2018 Nissan frontier pro-4x brand new and I never even thought about the paint issue until I noticed how bad it was after watching this video, if they had addressed it off the lot I wouldn't have rust happening already. I love my truck but I am a little disappointed in Nissan for knowing it's an issue and doing nothing about it. But the idea of line-x isn't bad

Good interview. Maybe the best way to by an old truck is to buy a brand new one 🤔. But even every new full-size truck (except maybe Tundra) gets better fuel econ.

i agree it's an issue but it is what it is. i've had my 2008 for 10 years. lots of offroad use, lots of BC logging roads. i tape off a line just below the gas cap cover, and put multiple layers of plasti-dip spray. works well. reapply every couple years. the best solution would be a proper application of line-x etc. i took the cheap road and it's working out fine for me. looks totally fine.

BC logging roads are on my long term list for camping. We travel to Vancouver Island frequently and I can attest that the logging roads out there are way rougher than the ones in Ontario and Quebec. The potholes alone will swallow up a small car.

Had the Frontier and the Titan Pro4x. Awesome trucks and rock solid motor and transmission. Never has any issues. Pulled a 20 ft bass boat with my Fronty and strong puller. Price on these alone are why I wont buy a Tacoma. Nissan Trucks are very underated.

I had a 2016 frontier. The paint quality was terrible and paint just chipped and flaked off the hood. I was hit from the rear and my bumper and tailgate were replaced and repainted and it stood out because they did such a nice job compared to the wavy oem finish.

I handed a 2008 Pathfinder and I loved that SUV, the power train is solid, great to drive. I know is a bit different from the frontier and very similar at the same time

16 mpg sounds good to me, my 03' F150 gets 12.4 mpg and its a money pit. Definitely got my eyes on the Frontier truck , later 6 speed generation looks really good cause budget and fun factor

I have the same color. I have the same issues. I touched up all the spots I could that looked bad amd i bought more of that clear rock paint protector used ceran wrap put it on the truck where it was chipping the worst traced the design with a marker and then transferred it to the clear paint protection cut it out and installed it myself. The 3m paint protection role was like $10 I think. The clear coat also stinks on nissan it's so easy to scratch just like the interior panels. Otherwise a good truck. It tows better then the 2012 tacoma I had with a 4.0. I have electric brakes and helper bags. I will say I have ended up in a situation where I went to a farm auction and ended going way way over payload and towing capacity and honestly it handled it. I definitely won't do it daily but if there's a situation that calls for it it will handle it.

Nice review-if the pitted extensions are a BIG problem - he's doing fine, as almost every fender extension on trucks collects pits in the real world. Dualies have it much worse. A trip to a good detailer would solve it - till it's driven again. A lot of Jeepers spray bed liner to combat the issue. BTY, we just bought a 2019 King Cab Pro-4 and we really look forward to pulling our off-road tear drop trailer with it.

First year Titan 4WD with off road package currently with 145k miles, not a single issue. Absolutely love it but I am now looking to go smaller. Two problems with Nissan, gas mileage and paint. For the problem stated here with chips, my Titan actually has factory color matched line-x like paint installed on those trouble areas and has held up very well.

I had a frontier pro 4x for 2 months while my Tacoma frame was being replaced. That paint issue is real and is keeping me from buying a frontier. I used it hard in the woods for my work and it was 100x worse than his. Leading edge of back bumper had no paint left. Everything else I loved about that truck. Tough as nails

My 2003 2.7, Auto., 4x4 Regular cab Tacoma has 267,750 US miles and runs like a top. As for rust issues in Colorado are minor. Both bumpers sandblasted and powder coated $80 each. I just use sand paper and wire brush to keep surface rust from becoming an eyesore. A bit of touch up and spray paint. I recently replaced rack and pinion, in and out power steering hoses, PS flush, alignment. Biggest repair: $2,695. Left exterior door handle $113, all dash area lighting $110, at 80K R&R hit and miss water pump, fan belts twice, and that's it. I power flush Transmission and engine coolant every 30K. Full synthetic Castrol 5W-50 every 3K. Both differentials and transfer case has 75W-140 synthetic Mobil 1. I can use new shocks and struts, but I can get by without that for now. My first Toyota and I'm highly impressed with the quality and toughness. My plans are for a new third generation SR Tacoma, and only two upgrades are 4x4 and automatic. I like the value of an entry-level Tacoma. Aluminum wheels, window tint, better tires, etc... Come with time. I got no problem with a work pickup that has black bumpers, mirrors, door handles. My 2003 has all I've mentioned along with Rockford "10 Sub, two 600 Watts Amps each, Infinity speakers, and Alpine deck for playing mid 60s to mid 80s Pop music. Toyota 4x4s are second to none.

That’s a nice truck but the paint issue would bug me too. I have seen others with side steps and that blocked the small rocks on gravel roads from flying up and damaging the paint. They would just take them off if they planned any off roading

I purchased a 2018 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x about six months ago. I paid $25k out the door and it only had 18k miles on it. You simply can't beat the price considering all of the bells and whistles (like a locking rear differential) when you compare the Frontier to other mid-size trucks. Sure, is it a little long in the tooth but if you know that going in, you won't regret the ruggedness and reliability of the Fronty. Great video!!

I don't need a gas guzzling truck. I've had several trucks. American and foreign. This Nissan has been perfect for my needs. But I can tell from your comments your ignorance only allows you to see your narrow minded view. It doesn't matter where something is made. And to be honest I had more issues with Chevy than any of my other trucks. Transmission went out after 125000 miles. Heat core went out and every TPS went bad before truck was 8 years old

I own one. Turning radius sucks and the front seats aren’t comfortable for long distance travel. Has more room inside and horse power then a Tacoma. It also fits in my garage. Lastly it was a lot more affordable. I paid $26,000 used. It had 35,000 miles on it.
