First ever red extreme heat warning issued in UK as Europe hit by heatwave - BBC News

A red extreme heart warning has been issued for the first time by the UK Met Office for parts of England, meaning a risk to life is likely as temperatures could hit 40C (104F).
It points to there being a danger to life, with the risk of illness not limited to vulnerable people.
In Europe, the heatwave is fuelling wildfires in Portugal, France and Spain.
Experts say heatwaves are becoming more frequent and extreme because of climate change.

The amount of people outside was unreal. I'd be off to the nearest shopping centre in that heat. Being Australian, we all have air-conditioning, so it's a lot easier on those days. But it's physically painful to be outside on days like that. Hope they all are okay during the heatwave.

Also if you hate it so much, you live in a European Union. Move north to a cooler country and stop complaining, at least until you get severe depression from 20 C overcast days and go somewhere tropical where you will be baked alive like the pussy soyboy European you are. Stop bitching about your near non existant problems and grow a pair, I get worse everything here in the states and I find way to manage. Heat is inescapable, so stfu.

@@SooziinCa hey no worries.. a few years ago I was sat having a cigarette in my mum's back garden and it was mid summer and really hot, although not as hot as it is today, anyway I noticed this blackbird land on her grass and he had his beak wide open like he was gasping!! And I realized then that I should put water out and I've done so every year.. also noticed that the hedgehogs came for a drink also.. I believe that same blackbird comes back with his female (although it could now be a different one) but it's something that needs to be mentioned as people are busy etc.. and probably don't think ya know, but I often tell my story as although their not human but their just as important in fact if the animals go that means we won't be long after...so we need to take care of the little things as they need our help 💙

I'm originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia up North but has been living in the South for almost 15 years and most of that here in Dallas Texas and I can tell you that I am not the only one who has noticed that heartless people around here never put out water for the birds you just don't see bird baths and it's terrible seeing these creatures in all the parking lots at the stores especially big supermarkets the birds can't wait to go under the car to catch some water as soon as it pulls up and has turned off the air conditioning . It's terrible and I have bought big plastic bowls at the Dollar Store , gotten them out of my car trunk ... set them in a shady place if possible and filled them with cool water for the birds ... in many places and shopping centers .

Do people not understand humidity as a factor? Also, if you are used to extreme heat, that's one thing. The body can not acclimate rapidly to extreme, sudden temperatures, be it extreme heat or cold. If you live in a place with extreme cold, you can not tolerate extreme heat, etc. It can kill vulnerable populations. Where I live, if it gets over 100 degrees, it is unbearable because of the humidity. At the same time, if it gets below 10F, the wind chill and bitter cold kills people too. Without humidity or wind, both things become more bearable, but not for children, disabled, or elderly.

@@rango089 Ok, go on, explain it to me? I grew up with it, it is considered normal here and I'm not an American who thinks of the American way of life as superior or better. I mean, unless you blow up cities to build wood structures half buried in the ground like hobbit homes with trees all around and lots of vegetation and gardens, you still need ventilation and I wouldn't consider air conditioning to be particularly unsustainable. Then again, maybe you don't have the same information as I have, maybe the way I know air conditioning is different than, I don't know. But for me, when the temperatures are too hot or too cold you heat or you cool. You wouldn't question me for heating my home when it's below the freezing mark for 4-5 months, then why you'd say something when it's 30 or hotter? It's the same thing, too hot or too cold.

I can say that I've been through some bad summers, here in the southern part of the US, good ol southwest Arkansas lol. We have triple digits plus humidity. I do maintenance work in a tire manufacturing plant, and work around the hot curing presses. It's been brutal so far, I have to admit. What I've found that helps, if you're outside, a light cotton long sleeve shirt helps. It's breathable and keeps the sun off your skin. Don't wear anything with polyester in it. Polyester can generate heat, which is great for winter, but not for hot weather. Plus, a breathable hat, to keep the sun off your head. If you have outside chores to take care of, do it early.

I experienced 109 degree heat last week and it is scary. Within 5 minutes you are sweating bullets and it’s hard to breath. I can see how elderly & people on meds could easily die in it. One thing to remember is 85 & high humidity is far worse than 100 & low humidity so check out the humidity level before you panic bc it might not be that bad. If you’ve ever been to Las Vegas or southern Spain where it’s desert-y 100 degree (38c) heat is tolerable and you can easily cool down with water. If you don’t have AC put a bunch of ice in a bowl and put a fan behind it turn it high and sit right in front of it. It’s instant AC.

I’m an Aussie, 60 years ago in extreme heat days that is exactly what my mum would do. A huge bowl of water with large blocks of ice in it, placed in front of the fan so the air blowing across the ice and water became cold like air conditioning. It works well, you just have to keep two days ahead with the ice so it’s frozen solid. I have used Tupperware square rounds in the past for ice. Good size.

These heat stories are reminiscent of last year to those of us in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. In late June, 2021, Portland, Oregon, whose previous record high was 104 F. (41.5 C), set a new record of 116 F. (46.5 C). [Average high: 82 F. (27 C).] For three days running, temperatures were over 110 F (43.5 C). 400 miles northeast in Spokane, Washington experienced much the same. Its norms as well as its highs and new highs were and are about the same as Portland. The heat phenomenon extended geographically a considerably larger distance than this. The heat dome measured over 1000 miles in diameter. South central British Columbia, Canada was even hotter than the adjacent areas south of it. One town topped out at 50 C! Mind you, this whole region is considered temperate zone, lying between 45 and 50 degrees of latitude, quite similar to Europe. And it may be worthy of mention that both NW US and Europe lie along the NW coast of their respective oceans. The system formation was due to weather influences coming from the arctic, and the changes occurring there. How interesting to hear in your report about the Azores highs as an influencer of winter weather, not just in the Iberian peninsula, but northward into France and Britain! I had not heard of this before. And you have much longer time frames from which you can get weather indicators than the western U.S. can. This certainly seems like an oceanic weather generator for the Atlantic. The Pacific has the "El nino/la nina" fluctuation in water temperatures some thousand miles west of Peru. El nino heightens summer temperatures on the American coast and make for drier weather, while la nina lowers temperatures and causes more rain. In 2022, we are now in a la nina year. Each part of the cycle generally persists for about 3 years, transitions, and then reverses for about 3 years. This fluctuation is in turn caused by the flow of waters from the Antarctic northward, which alters hemispheric air flows at the equator. Antarctic waters also flow north into the Atlantic (the "gulf stream"), forming the seasonal weather patterns along the coasts of the Americas and onward to Greenland, then crossing the Atlantic south of Iceland, to Ireland, then France. This stream is now being disrupted by the huge ice melts in both Antarctica and Greenland, causing changes to weather to the west of Africa, and heating air over the north Atlantic. All these effects are global, all are unstable, and it is all a measure of the Earth transitioning from what has been to what is to come.

@@bucktooth002 It's about highs, not lows. And it's about the northwest, not the southwest. You're talking about a dramatically different climate zone. Phoenix has averaged a high temperature of 106 F (41 C) during July and August for very many years, so these temperatures are not out-of-norm there. And it's a very dry desert in Phoenix and Wickenburg, where steep variations are common. I grant you that snow in August is pretty unusual, but still. Car thermometers are unreliable, especially in extremes. The figures I mention are official.

@@amazingsupergirl7125 Thanks for the sympathy! Something like 60% of us up north don't even have air conditioning, much less use it. But the other part of the catastrophe is the devastating fires. Oregon lost something like triple the forested area to fires in 2021 that it did in the worst fire season ever before that. The smoke was nasty. And that's one thing we've shared with the southwest, at least that year. It's heartbreaking to see the devastations in California over that last 5 years, and it's been bad for all of us across the west: Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and southwest Canada. Not exactly carbon neutral either.

There are thousands of women and children who have been living for more than 47 years in climatic conditions in which the temperature during the summer usually ranges between 46 and 52 degrees Celsius without air conditioners and without refrigerators. In the first years of this period (20 years), people lived in tents and without electricity. No one from the West cared about the matter, although this situation is still going on with a slight difference (the beginning of the introduction of electricity, even if it is weak). This is the case of the Sahrawi people who live in the aforementioned conditions due to the Moroccan invasion of their land in 1975. It seems funny that others complain just because the temperature reached 39 degrees Celsius.

Now we don't have much snow here in Germany, days instead of months, but there is still the summer infrastructure of swimming lakes and outdoor pools like there are in Australia (where I also spent a year living) Britain doesn't have that infrastructure.

As an American Southerner, I used to feel the same way. Where I went to university it would often get over 47° C (118° F). But then I moved to Asia and became friends with many European expats and found out those in the more northern or mild climates often don't have AC in their homes. It really makes a difference. I think it's common for Americans from the northern or more temperate areas (like Portland) to not have AC in their homes as well. It's a sad death spiral we're all in now, that the weather will make more people need to use AC, which will contribute to more climate change, which will make AC more necessary...
