When I discovered there was a U.S. Navy Battleship Destroyer being named after a Filipino, I was determined to learn all about this sailor making history. Telesforo Trinidad was one of the first Filipinos to join the U.S. Navy, as well as one of the first to receive the Medal of Honor for his valor and bravery. Filipinos have a long history with the U.S. military, and this is one story we can all be very proud of.

It’s complicated. Many people are grateful the U.S. has been such an important part of Philippine history. Some feel it was invasive and that their presence hurt more than it helped. I think how people feel is dependent on what generation you were born into as well as whether you remained on the Motherland or if you spent any time (or were born) in the U.S.

At a glance, it appears that he was also awarded the Silver Star Medal (a high award given for bravery in combat). Filippinos have a great tradition of service in the U.S. Naval Services (Navy, Coast Guard, & Marine Corps). A Hawaiian Marine of Filippino descent taught me how to consistently shoot well. Filippinos also have a great tradition of serving in the U.S. Army - or else serving the Philippines alongside U.S. soldiers. 😎👍

When I joined the navy in '82 my boot camp company commander, Chief Petty Officer Reyes, was a Filipino and Vietnam veteran. Awesome man. His nickname was the Alabama Assassin, which we thought was hilarious. His favorite form of discipline for a bunch of late teen/early 20s knuckleheads was something he called Shark, which is the exercise commonly called the super man but with a swimming motion. Try that on a hot day on hot cement or asphalt! We loved him and feared him at the same time. He taught me so much, not just about how to be a good sailor, but a couple of life lessons along the way I still use to this day. I had the honor of serving with Filipinos and besides Chief Reyes, the honor of being trained by one or two. In my post-navy professional life, I worked with a good man, Mister Montilla, for many years before he retired. I've always enjoyed working with Filipinos and I'm very glad a ship is named after a very great one. Salamat po for posting this.

Tesz, thank you very much for telling the story of Telesforo Trinidad and about how the US Navy named an Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer the USS Telesforo Trinidad (DDG-139). It’s truly an American story about Filipinos. Its naming will highlight not only the self-less and distinguished service of Filipinos in the military, but all Filipinos who have come to pursue the American dream. I hope that follow your stories will be able to reconnect to their Filipinos roots as events leading to its commissioning will tell the story of their parents.

Books and videos are a good start and should pique the interests of Filipinos around the world to make that trek to the Philippines and learn about their culture first-hand; if not for their own sake, but for the sake of their children. I’ve seen over the years how Filipino parents have forsaken their children’s opportunity to learn about their parents’ culture during their formative years, and the latter went through life struggling to learn it second or third-hand through books, and now the social media, on what it is like to be a Filipino. My wife and I were fortunate and caught this dilemma early in our marriage, and decided to raise our children in the Philippines to learn about their Filipino culture first-hand, that they will take with them wherever they go for the rest of their lives. Yes, there is a lot to discover about the Philippines, and its culture, that has changed a lot over the years. Whether the change is good or bad for the country or the people remains to be seen. Regardless, our Filipino culture is a part of us that we can neither deny nor ignore, so we might as well learn and become intimate with it.

Sorry my friend, it’s not a Battleship, the USS Telesforo Trinidad (DDG-139) will be a guided missile destroyer that is capable of sinking, by itself if need be, at least half of an enemy fleet and still be back home for shore leave. If you find yourself against it, and the ship brings other ships with air support, it’s too late to rethink your life choices. 😂 So year, it is a battleship in a smaller package that fights smarter, not harder.

@@vietvet9494 You are right, I have not served in the military. Thank you for your service. And I’m glad you feel you were treated fairly. That is how it should be, in my opinion.🙋🏻‍♀️

@@TESZMillan Sorry for the confusion, I was responding to bonkersblock comment. All of my children are serving and have served in the US military. My 2 daughters are US Marines, much pride. Filipinos are well regarded, for their toughness and dedication to serve. Again, sorry for the confusion, great video.

It's a guided missile Destroyer. There's no such thing as a Battleship Destroyer. LOL

Thank you for clarifying! As a non-military person, all I've ever heard about are "battleships", so it's good to now be able to differentiate one from the other.

It's a big honor to have a ship named after you. There are US president's that are not even given this honor!
