Hey Mike nice videos got two Firebirds 68 coupe 69 convertible. I found your channel and your escapades got the fire burning to get them back on road been stored since 97. Got the 68 almost done New brake lines, master cyl ,wheel cylinders flushed system going with dot 5 fluid this time, new fuel tank , lines, pump ,sending unit, rebuilt Carb. I'm 67 with bad ticker so have to work slow. Its all good They are both all stock so not much drama . I did replace Distributor with HEI and drill primed oil system with the Butler oil priming shaft but I did remove the black coating it was flaking off didn't want that in engine . little paint work 68 will be good to go. Bought it in 76 great running car, 69 got it in 94 had it 1 week caught on fire in my Garage at 3am it was literal firebird fought the fire with garden hose in my whitey tighties lol ( was electrical fire at old add on Amp meter no fuse) just burned interior took about yr to find parts and repair it . sorry for the long post and thanks for the videos Sincerely Michael

Glad you got er going again, sounds great. My dads 67 lemans had a butler 474 in it, they build the best pontiacs ib my opinion. Have fun rippin it up, I'm still working on my 69 gto. I have the fuel tank out and pump out currently. I tested my robbmc pickup and it tested ok, tested my fuel gauge and it works so hoping something was just sticking causing fuel level not working right. Next front end rebuild and front tubular control arms and qa1 coilovers. Considering a set of edelbrock heads in the future, i have head studs currently and wondering if i can pull the heads in the car with the studs. Love your car!!

Hope your coolant temp woes get resolved! There has to be something going on where you won't need to get a 160 degree stat; all that will do is just delay the same problem. Also, don't fuel injection systems recommend 180 degree stats? Maybe I'm thinking of multiport fuel injection systems rather than throttle body. As already suggested, it could just be a matter of reading inconsistencies with the Fitech sending unit. Hit your engine with that IR gun to see what's really going on there! Otherwise, air pockets - I'll let my 79' Trans Am with a 400 idle with the rad cap off for a good hour before I feel confident that it's bled, and even then, the recovery bottle level will still drop consistently after a few drives until eventually balancing out. These old V8's trap air in the cooling jackets like nobody's business. Did you have any manipulating to do to your divider plate? I just got in my 11-bolt Flowkooler today with a new divider plate from them, and the clearance without gasket was around .045, and the gasket added another .030. I tried to bend it, but got too aggressive and ended up mangling the divider plate and so I got another from Butler coming. Hopefully it won't need any manipulating. Any suggestions on how to gently hammer down that divider plate, or should I just not even bother? .075 is under the recommended maximum of .100, but I'd like to get it a little tighter than that if I can, but if I'm just gonna keep messing up these divider plates, maybe it won't be worth splitting hairs so much. Also, what kind of radiator did you get? The best ones I've heard are the fat two rows (1.25"+ width tubes) like Griffin, Cold Case, Be Cool, etc. rather than the 3 or 4 cores with the smaller width tubes. Maybe you just don't have enough rad for your build? If your cooling system is up to spec, then you're looking at tuning problems. Maybe your idle mixture is too lean, or the ignition timing needs more advance... Cooling woes are annoying, and are common with these Pontiac motors. Hope it gets sorted out!
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 2 жыл бұрын
Good stuff Robert. I've determined that I need to get Mechanical Gauges... ha, ha... using my IR gun, the FiTech reading is 15 degrees high, and my stock gauge is 15 degrees low. A Mechanical gauge should be juuuussst right. Like GoldiLocks. lol Bummer about your go at modifying the FlowKooler plate, which is really good to begin with. The Butler plate is also really good, out of the box. So, I wouldn't bother modifying it. I got a BeCool radiator set up with dual electric fans. All is good in cooling land. Thanks for the awesome comment!

Hey Mike , not sure if you wanted to raise your exhaust after buying your after market cross member but i was watching a video that came on after watching your last video that was from Detroit Muscle , the video is about putting a 1000 hp motor into a mercury grand marque . I know right. But anyway they cut the original cross member and welded two pieces of angle together and then welded that to the cross member. To get the height they needed they used a piece of cardboard as a gauge between the floor and the angle. Check out the video it's pretty interesting. Anyway after I watched it , I thought of your situation . might be more clearance for you . And it could always be another video for you.😀

Chevy guys prime clockwise. I always use AC Delco 180* stats and have never had a problem. Today’s GM stats are junk but I have Delco’s from my Dad’s stash from the 70’s. I mix 50 % Prestone Antifreeze with 50% Demineralized water from the grocery store. When I drain it and change it, I always drain the block. I’d love to get a Wagner PCV but with the exchange rate from Canadian to US Dollar, it’s way too much $.

Congrats getting back on the road. 1. Why didn't it fire right up? Did something in the Fitech get reset or ..? 2. The small passage between the intake's water x-over and back of the timing chain cover/water pump ensures water is always circulating, even with the thermostat closed. Your new thermostat would include the rad in that loop. Am I missing something?
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Roy! 1) I have no idea... maybe an air pocket in the fuel lines? I noticed later that I have to fully Key off, before trying to crank again, as there's a little squirt of fuel when you go to crank. If you just crank, it doesn't give that little pump. Secondly, After changing the crank fuel setting, it starts much better, as you saw. I'm still learning the idiosyncrasies of the FiTech unit. 2) Agreed. That's why I was hinting at that I don't think I like the Thermostat to be constantly flowing. Anyway, lot's to research there. Thanks, as usual!

What’s with the FiTech throttle body and independent fuel rails? What type of setup is this? I just returned the exact master kit you installed back to Summit because of nothing but problems. Two new ECUs installed and they both failed within a hundred miles or so. Is your FiTech holding up? PS if you’re FiTech sponsored, just don’t even answer.
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about your tough luck... my unit is still working great. Why the fuel rails? Because at some point I'm going to convert to port injection. Before that happens, I'm going to try talking FiTech into dynoing my current set up, switch over to Port Injection, and dyno again. Hopefully you'll be able to find a system that works, no matter what you go with, I'm extremely happy that I don't have a carburetor anymore. Good luck, and thanks for the update, let us know what you end up with. Thanks!

@@FastMonty I put my Holley carb setup back on. If I’m honest with myself, there was absolutely nothing wrong with it I just wanted to try and get fancy high tech and MAYBE a little bit more fuel mileage. It has an electric choke that is configured perfectly and handles cold starts just as well as the FiTech did. Glad yours is holding up. I should also note that I legitimately daily drive mine. Everywhere. All kinds of traffic and distances. Truly daily drive, not just cars and coffee. Maybe the Fitech just isn’t built for that. 🤷‍♂️
