Great tips & tricks to make it work and look great. I'm a powder coat guy but the paint looks nice and will do well. I powder coated my mailbox Pontiac Blue so I'm all in. I love the plastic "razor" blades and even use them on my pizza pan! One may wish to use the Ω setting to make sure earth is solid - in anything. My 1964 389 has the OEM intake manifold as I'm just going for stock action but if I did a cut like you I'd make a dedicated earthing strap but the lock washer cutting in is likely to work just fine. I keep copper woven straps for earthing anything suspect and solder in eye rings. If a guy has owned Corvettes or airplanes - you get the earthing thing drummed into you brain! Your work is perfect and it looks far better than the old sea of chrome. Bobby

Good tips WRT tape over tape to prevent paint flakes, and the metal razor blade possibly gouging the aluminum. FWIW, I use the isosceles-trapezoid-shaped blades that go in utility knives. They are stiffer and have a more generous bevel that allows you to get the cut parallel with the gasket surface, so you get the strength of a steel blade without much risk of gouging the aluminum.

I’m super glad I watched this one too!! I’m using black valve covers as well, and seeing that black valley pan and how good it goes with the black valve covers, I’m gonna do the same. I’m also using a black extreme flow air filter, so I have the black and blue theme as well.

If you end up with no connectivity, just run a jumper ground.

I got tied up and live in a humid climate. How do you remove surface rust? And is the whole blow torch drying unnecessary? Thanks so much!
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 10 ай бұрын
You can grind it off, or use a Phosphoric acid to convert the rust. Then paint it with a rust preventative, like POR 15. (I did a couple videos of that) Blow torch isn't necessary unless you recently cleaned a part and want to get rid of all moisture/contaminants. Have fun!

You have connectivity what you want to check for is a voltage drop. That will tell you how good your ground is. Anything below 4 mv is good.

motor looks fantastic. I didnt know that about the electical. I think this might be the cause of my elect. issues. My hood tach lights up but the needle doesnt work.

Thanks Brother! Yeah, someone else pointed out it's the voltage drop to ground that's even more important. I now have to re-examine my grounds, etc... glad it gave you some ideas for a solution. Thanks for the comment!

Make sure you run an anode in your radiator to prevent galvanic corrosion between parts.

@@FastMonty Flex-a-Lite zinc anodes is one style . After running a Torker manifold for years with out protection . Galvanic corrosion ate away the tapped bolt locations at the thermostat housing rendering it useless. Anode should be replaced every so often ,so I do it when I flush out the radiator.

Really a great video Mike love the connectivity tests. Your back tapping trick was Awesome but for future reference maybe some foam ear plugs would work as well just a thought I wanted to share with you . Really liked your separation of the water passage. I think Pontiac should have built them that way . your's is finished to perfection ,Awesome job. By the way on a side note sorry I decided against using your old intake manifold but I think one with out being port matched is a better option for me. Can't wait for the next videos. Peace Man!😎

Thanks John... yeah, I actually tried ear plugs, they were just a little too small to give a good seal. But, great idea! No worries about the manifold. Glad I sent you the pics beforehand. Thanks for the comment!

By any chance do you know where can I get the torque specs on a stock 389 -6.4 (66,Catalina) .. I need the ones for the valley pan and the intake manifold ... specially for the valley pan some sites said 10lb/ft others 15lb/ft !

@@FastMonty I was told that the Torker intake that I have is for high end rpm and that because I have a stock motor, I wouldn’t get a good ride out of it unless I beefed up my cam, and crankshaft

@@brenttaj7573 Ohhh, I get it now. The best manifold for a stock 400 is the RPM Performer. BUT, it's taller than stock, you should check dimensions before ordering one. (I have one, as seen in the other video, If you like the polished look, I'll make you a good deal, ha, ha...)

Im not really a big fan of painting aluminum. Paint works as insulator and retains heat. But then again after a couple years of oil stains and impregnated with carbon and other contaminants.
