First Firing with the L&L Plug-N-Fire 120v cone 10 kiln!

First time firing the L&L Plug-N-Fire kiln. L&L sent me the second kiln they ever made of this model and I’m so excited to share it with you! The first one they made went to the winner of our kiln giveaway during ClayShareCon2024! Thanks L&L for for all you do and for being a sponsor of ClayShare!
This little kiln plugs into a regular 120 volt, 12.5 amp service and can fire to cone 10! This is a test kiln and the interior is 8”x8”x9” which is .3 cubic foot of space. Because of its size you do not need or want a kiln vent which makes this kiln very portable.
I fired the kiln to cone 5 (2167°f) on medium speed with a 1:30 min preheat and a 5 min hold. The firing took 10 hours to get to top temp and reached 2173°f but you can tell from the cone pack that it was a bit hotter than cone 5 and closer to cone 6.
The mug I fired on the test fire was made using Tuckers smooth stone clay and glazes with my Deep Green Sea celadon, Amaco Deep Sea Celadon, Amaco Chun Plum and Seaweed Potters Choice glazes.
I think this is a great test kiln. I love how portable it is so you can take it with you if you travel or need a kiln for workshops.
If you are looking for a small kiln, a test kiln or make a lot of jewelry then this is the prefect kiln for you.

I just bought one of these! I’m in Australia so importing it through a kiln shop wasn’t a problem. I think I am in love with it! I’m just making tiny clay animals at present and it’s wonderful to just be able to make a few and then get them fired. My test firing cost $2.50 and our rate here for electricity is about 39c per kw hour. I would imagine a longer glaze firing would be a little dearer, but our solar on the house on a cloudy day paid for it easily. If I am successful with making and selling these items I will eventually get a larger kiln as well, but for now this is going to be amazing! At the moment I’m doing a once-fired batch of items using a long and slow firing. Fingers crossed! I’ve had three kilns over the years. My first kiln was gas, the second was a larger electric kiln which I sold (stupidly!) You know it is, you get into pottery, get out of it, get back into it! I think I’m into it again forever!

Hey Jess, Justed to thank you for your help in getting me straight on my clay that was still porus after cone 6 firing and getting mold and staining. I was using Amaco 38 which NOW I'm told should be fired higher than cone 6. Anyway, I ordered new clay from Sheffield pottery in Mass. and will begin working with that. This was a really really good video. Thanks for posting it. I recently left a collaborative studio in Texas and I’m now building a studio in my basement. Even though I’ve been throwing for a while, I’ve never actually fired on my own, so I’m wondering if this would be a good mini investment to practice before I get a larger kiln.

I like the camera view and luckily it doesn't make me sick with too much movement as others do. BTW, you connect so well with the camera that I've never felt it was static even on the tripods.

Question have you fired this kiln to cone 10. I have a very small home studio in my basement. I am thinking of possibly getting a kiln and I normally only to wood fired pottery with a group of potters in my area but I was thinking of getting this small kiln for bisque fires and testing to cone 10. Have you enjoyed your new L&L kiln. You have beautiful work

I pointed a WiFi camera at my kiln so not only can I watch it on the app but I can check on it visually. I also put a WiFi thermometer a few feet from the kiln so I can monitor room temp as well. Makes it really easy to frequently “check in” on the firing.

@@tftexe I’ve got an Eve Weather in the room for temperature monitoring (works with HomeKit). Also have a wireless Eufy camera pointed at the kiln. Their new S3 pro is really good for night vision. Using the Kiln Aid app on my iPad along with room temp and visual confirmation from the camera saves me from going to the kiln in the middle of the night when it’s firing.

My L n L 18s in the U.K. is push buttons. We don’t have this style kiln so I can only do slow or fast, no medium option ❤

@@JessicaPutnamPhillips bisque is ok cone 5 runs a bit hot towards cone 6 but I don’t have venting so keep one peephole open during fire. Still learning only done two glaze n 3 x bisque fires to date but I’m loving it and watching clayshare live at 5 n prime. Just got my latest hibiscus rolling pin from you excited to use that soon ❤️

That is the sound of the relays in the kiln. It’s a good sound because it means the kiln is working! 😁

This kiln can get to cone 10 in 5-6 hours if you want to but I usually go a bit slower at around 9-10 hours

Until I put in the rate per hour I won’t know but I’m guessing about $10 per firing for a small kiln like this but it could be less.

This is a great test kiln or for someone who only makes small things. I always recommend that before buying a kiln you think about 1. Your pottery needs( what size pots you make or plan to make) 2. Your electrical budget 3. Your financial budget That combined with a few discussion with a knowledge kiln rep will help guide folks to the right kiln for them.☺️

I rent, so changing electrical for a big kiln is not an option. I definitely won't regret. Hopefully someday I'll have my own house👌🏻

@kateturner: It seems huge compared to the Olympic HB84 I've been using since 2010. I don't know whether it's the greater volume, superior insulation, or improved wear resistance that pleases me most.
