This was our first hack alone on the road and we got SO lost. Hack out with me and my GoPro Hero 7 and hear some of the equipment I wear when hacking out and why. This was a mix of woodland trail ride and road riding.

I ride and am taught by a lady up the road from me. They want to get me to a level where I can go down to there farm, tack up the pony I ride (he's bomb proof so I'm not to worried about him spooking and bolting with me) and take him on a hack or in there areana. I'm a bit nervous as I've only ever hacked with other people (adults with me I'm 12. However my trainers grandson hacks out alone and he's 7 so that makes me feel more confident. These tips are great thanks so much. I'm defiantly going to use these when I hack alone xxx

I'm also most likely going to be going round the road as I'm not very familiar with the bridal paths round me! I also always wear a back protector when I ride as my dad likes me to so he is reassured that I'm as safe as possible we riding

@@RidingWithRhi thanks x glad I'm not the only one with protective parents! Im a beginner rider so I'm not sure how long it will be until I hack alone but before corona and the UK lock down I rode 2 or 3 times a week so improved fast! I ride a 13.3 hh Welsh d named Cody. I get to ride him loads because otherwise he would have to go out on loan if I didn't ride him. The first time I rode him was the same day as some people came to view him but they werent expirienced enough to have him lucky for me x

I love how honest this is, you both did great! My first hack alone on my first pony was for our pony club riding and safety test (about 13+ years ago now!). We were both pretty nervous and my pony would not move, despite many pony club kicks 😅, the head of the pony club was a lady who took no nonsense and so gave me and Badger (piebald cob, so the name fit 😂) a right telling off for being underprepared for the test... Embarrassing, but it forced me to properly take control and not pass all my nervousness on to Badger, and thankfully we got a pass. I must admit I still do find it hard to properly relax on hacks alone though.

Going out alone takes lots of confidence on the part of the rider and the horse. I just rode out alone recently after not going alone for 3 years after my horse Fox bucked me off twice when I tried to ride him out alone. Since then we have had many miles and lots of partnership building and now we are fine alone.

Love your honesty Rhi! I also love how accommodating people ( & all the farmers who welcome you into their fields) in England are, towards horses. Not at all the same in the US. 😡🤬♥️🐴🐎

Awesome job. Ted seems very cool. Is he more relaxed with you mounted or on the ground? I ask because with my horses they tend to be more spooky being led on the ground and surpringly much more confident with a rider. Thanks for the upload👍🏽
@RidingWithRhi
@RidingWithRhi 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm good question. It really depends on the situation - he’s set off by the same things whether I am on him or not - being alone, wind etc but usually if I am on the ground we are at the yard so he’s always near other horses anyway. I think most horses are more relaxed on the ground because it’s more natural for them and they can read your body language a bit more?

hi i have a 12.2 pony that has a really flat back and i've tried numerous saddles in different sizes and none are fitting her, a lady used a donkey pad on her which worked well, any suggestions on what we can do? i can't find a donkey pad anywhere literally!! do you know of any places that have them?

Always hack in a body protector. Whether the horse is spooky or not. If the horse slips your more likely to be sat on as the floor is more uneven then a school. Seen the BHS ad and by Lord now I’ve been preaching about it since 2017 😂

I’ve walked my horse many times up the lane near my yard,and Monday I may have my first hack on him with my aunt! He has seperation anxiety so without the other horses he’s very spooked and nervous,so I’m worried about riding him outside of the arena even if my aunt is there with her horse (my horses BFF) is there any tips if he does try to bolt? Do I stay on? Or throw myself off? Xx
@RidingWithRhi
@RidingWithRhi 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t throw yourself off! Try to stay calm and use half halts to get him to slow down. Avoid pulling constantly as he might just set his mouth against you and in a battle of strength he will always win. With a bolting horse, if you can use one rein to get them on a circle / turning, they’ll naturally have to slow down to keep their balance. With a horse with separation anxiety I would take it really slow: start with just a few mins standing still in hand whilst your Aunt’s horse disappears from view + gradually work up longer and longer, then go for a short walk in hand etc, then ride in the arena when he can’t see his BFF and build it up. That’s what I would do. I have a video coming up with how I got to this point so look out for that.

I was on an Icelandic that was galloping down a forest path with no room to turn left or right, so I leaned forward and pushed her head down, which luckily worked. But I wouldn't like to have to do it again. We were both strangers, new horse etc. and she just wanted the fastest way home.

I’m sure they can! I can get on Ted from the floor but I choose not to. I have once, but he’s tall, I’m getting older and it puts a lot of strain on their back mounting from the floor so I try to avoid it wherever possible.
