Have played a lot of gut hybrids over the years, the best for me is 1.30 Lux NG at 56 crossed with 1.25 4G or Tourna Black Zone at 52. Plays great, but the gut mains break after 6-7 hours. Now play full bed poly for the same time period for a fraction of the cost. If you are not a string breaker, gut/poly is great!

Natural gut is truly lovely. I love it in VS Gut 16 in a Solinco Whiteout at 55 lbs in the mains, crossed with Head Hawk 18 or Solinco Outlast 18 at 50 lbs (both are moderately powerful, super slick, good tension maintenance polys). Spin like crazy and all the touch and feel I would ever want. It does last pretty well, usually over 10 hours for me. But the price adds up, it can't handle wet courts and conditions, and sometimes I don't want as much power as gut provides.

@@youngsuit For me, poly/gut is no better. It doesn’t play as well and the poly goes dead and stops snapping back also around the 6 hour mark. I always thought gut in the cross is a waste.

@@youngsuit I don’t play poly past the 6 hour mark as the elasticity is gone and they are dead. But yes the poly would maybe last a little longer for me before breaking. I am comparing 1.25 poly and 1.30 gut.

You are exactly right!! I love this setup with the Babolat hybrid. Absolutely, the feel of the ball coming off the strings is amazing. Maybe once a year I treat myself to a set of these. Other times I play with a full bed of RPM blast which is great but takes a few hours getting comfortable with after playing with this hybrid for a few weeks.

I think it can be a really good option for club players. If you are not breaking strings often then the gut will last really long and you would need to string half the times. Many times the poly looses all the feeling and is dead way before breaking and with gut if you have on the crosses some round poly that holds for long the hybrid will last really a lot with great playabiliyt. I tried Wilson Gut and Alupower but the Alu lost quite fast the feeling and the gut was just the only thing working. With RPM Blast in the crosses the bed holds much better with the time.

Nat gut and poly hybrid is awesome. Finally made the switch. When you think your floater will go long it ends up dropping within the baseline. That’s saying not hitting your best shot. If you are hitting in stride you can control the power and placement. Just got back after years away and started with nxt 17g. After 200 balls from a machine, I broke the strings. Figured 17g would last me a while being away from tennis for so long. Lasted me 2 weeks from the day it was strung. Not even an hour on the court. I play about 2 maybe 3 if I’m lucky, times a week. It’s been a month now with feds set up. If it last me another 2 months i don’t mind paying extra for it. It cost me 15$ less to string with multi. I don’t like full bed polys. Definitely love the ALU rough. Curious to try babalot since I’m in champs choice. Would like to see if the 17g actually provides bit more power.

I use VS Touch on the mains at 51lbs and Babolat RPM blast on the crosses at 50lbs in my Ezone 98 7th ed and it makes up for the muted feel by providing more feedback and power for a frame with a low swing weight. I do get a a very large amount of spin especially after a few sessions in once the RPM blast loses tension after a few sessions. Gut actually is not expensive if you use it on the mains, this is because the gut keeps its tension while the poly dies substantially quicker and you only need to change your crosses, you won't be wearing out the gut quickly unless you use a shaped polly or you ruin it by getting it wet or exposed to ridiculously humid weather. Its perfect for people who have had arm issues.

I tried my first gut hybrid a few weeks ago. Wilson gut with rpm power and another racquet has lynx touch as the cross. I agree that you can really feel the elasticity of the string like the ball sinks in and has good dwell time and then shoots out. Great feel and penetration theough the baseline. No real noticeable loss of spin. Great power gain and i could knife my slice backhand fierce. My volleys felt so connected and were very deep and low. The biggest plus i think is on defensive shots. You can flick it and it will have way more depth than with a full poly setup. Gets you out of trouble easier in a rally. I love it. 6 hours so far and still not fraying. Will probably get another hour or 2 before they break. I've joined the darkside haha

If you can't rip it and holding back, you need to bump the tension. Try 55-53 or 57-55. You can expand the gap. So 57-52 works also, just a slight angle increase but power will dip, gut holds tension and last way longer then full poly when combined. You actually may save money unless you break strings.
@CJZM7777

Gut mains with poly cross plays great. I've tried it several times. I suggest you use a smooth round poly cross that holds tension better. Usually, stiffer polys like Lux 4G or Kirschbaum Max Power hold tension well and makes good crosses. I like using 16G gut with a 16Light or 17G poly with the gut mains strung 4 lbs higher than the poly cross say at 54/50 down to 50/46. But, it is too expensive for me so I now use TF NRG2 or TF MultiFeel mains with Kirschbaum Max Power crosses. BTW, gut/poly is excellent for spin. Dominque Theim used gut/poly hybrid and hit more spin on his FH than Nadal. Federer's slice BH with gut/poly is the highest recorded spin rate of any stroke ever.

@phones-boloniak3443 8 ай бұрын
I think rpm blast is shaped, if you use a smooth poly the gut mains will last longer. Klip is a more affordable gut and if you pair it with an affordable poly it’s not too bad. The gut holds tension for a long time so if you don’t break a lot of strings it could be cheaper than changing poly when it goes dead.

How different between multi/poly to gut poly? Whats the tension difference between two setups to achieve similar power-control balance?
@gab_ale
@gab_ale 8 ай бұрын
@@akbarberlian I just tried it out of curiosity, I did not perform an in depth comparison. I can just say that at the same tension as my other setups it feels more powerful and it doesn't seem to lose spin, although it's not great at it. It also feels much softer and elastic. The ball feels like it stays on the strings a bit longer (which I don't really love actually).

Great vid, thanks. I'm a VS natty gut user, hybrid-ed with Lux ALU. Yep, expensive. But super addictive. There are somewhat cheaper option for natural gut that I'm currently exploring. Also, the first thing to go is the Lux, so may try Sync in the crosses to see if I can get more life out of this set up. One question I have for you: what do you think about changing only the cross strings? Frowned upon by stringing vets. Supposedly stresses the frame. I don't understand why it would be any more stressful to cut out the crosses and reweave rather than cutting the mains too?

If you can try out the "poor man's" version w/ either X-1 or Xcel mains and a Round Poly, I'd be curious to see how close it is to Natural Gut. I suspect the Mulit will break in 2-3 hrs... but as a lowly 3.5-4.0 I can probably get quite a bit more time.

Well, I guess your right if someone is buying gut and can’t afford court time becuase of it… But that’s not going to be common. And if you can afford gut AND court time then of course 1 extra point per match would be worth it for any competitive player. 1 extra point would change the result of many tennis matches. Of course gut is not a requirement, but the argument that Rafa doesn’t use it so neither should you is a bit silly. After all Roger, Novak and Andy plays gut. Not to mention if it can help keep your wrist/arm stay in better health that’s also a good argument for it.

I personally think gut has a more elastic "rubber band-ish" feel to it. Definitely quite different to the multis and synth guts I've tried. I definitely hit faster serves with it. But like he stated in the video it is expensive, so I keep to a good SG or MLT. Karue Sell from MyTennisHQ also has a video where he tried gut and had a similar impression to what is seen in this video.
