@@davidceloski6498: Springdrive is impressive but useless. WAY better accuracy than the springdrive can be had with a cheapo plastic Casio atomic, or any other watch that syncs the time with the atomic clocks of the world. Springdrive defeats the purpose, the beauty of watchmaking is getting a mechanical "machine" to tell time extremely accurate. Using quartz or anything else but mechanical methods is useless in this pursuit. Might as well go for a Quartz watch (nothing wrong with that, I own several myself).

Interesting look at the GS. The GS clearly blows the other watches out of the water on case, dial, hands, and indices finishing, especially under macro (that is the stuff you look at and feel). I can see how you dig on the BB bezel, but it seems you have never been diving. I own the BB and when wet the bezel is hard to grip and turn. Much prefer my Rolex bezel, Seiko, Omega, and GS bezels. The GS diver has an excellent bezel in grip, feel, and use and like all Seiko bezels need to be used underwater to be truly be appreciated. The GS clasp is bulky, and I can dig not liking that, but it is adjustable without having to take off the watch. Can't do that with my Rolex and Omega watches. On a dive that is a godsend. The GS is more about understanding their design choices more than anything they do "wrong".
@BruceWilliams
@BruceWilliams 4 жыл бұрын
Despite how nice it is, the macro shows me Tudor and Rolex actually did a nicer job on all the dial details. While diving, the BB would be difficult to turn on a bracelet but not on rubber where there is ample room for gloved hands on the north and south sides. If I were to dive and wanted on the wrist adjust-ability I would probably for for a deep sea I like that system and its not as difficult to operate.

In London, the Grand Seiko boutique does not offer any discounts on the higher end models. The buying service and the hands on experience is great however. It's basically take it or leave it but you don't walk in there wanting to buy something unprepared to pay the price either I suppose. If you want a Grand Seiko, you'll pay for it and they're so worth it.

I've worn the SBGA231 for a few weeks and it is quite a bit more wearable than the Hi-Beat GS Diver (the 600m one). "Visually dynamic" is the exact phrase I'd use to describe it. In real life use the power reserve indicator is not distracting or visually unbalanced at all. The bezel is serviceable in my opinion, nothing special but the insert is very pretty. However the bracelet is kind of a let down for its price, when Tudor of all people make better diver specific bracelets for watches that can easily be bought for half the price of the 231. Still, if you have the cash and don't want to get yet another Sub, this GS is a good choice.

The Grand Seiko is undoubtedly a gorgeous watch, but it is massive. I love the Spring Drive system, but I hate that gauge. I wish GS would move it to the back side of the watch, and showcase that movement while you're at it. Omega is capable of doing it, so GS should be able to as well. While 200m water resistance is more than enough for a recreational dive watch, 300m is the standard for divers, and I'm sure GS can manage that as well. The lumed pip on the second hand is only to verify the watch is running, I dislike it being on the wrong side of the hand. It shouldn't matter, but it rubs me the wrong way. And that clasp. All other dive watch manufacturers have far more elegant solutions for this. I'm sure it works well, but it's unsightly. For a watch of that price I'd expect more. All in all, it is a beautiful watch, but it's got too many quirks that I can't get on board with. Every dive watch has things about it that I wish were different, but the most perfect dive watch for me is the Rolex Sea-Dweller 116600. It's 40mm, doesn't have a cyclops lens, looks elegant on the wrist (though a bit tall), has a massive overkill water resistance of 1220m, an unobtrusive gas escape valve, and full 60min gradations on the ceramic bezel. If I were going for something a little more vintage looking, the Rolex Submariner 14060M with 2 lines of text would be my choice. It's probably the most elegant dive watch out there, though the bracelet is a bit rattly because of the hollow center links, and the clasp is less than ideal not having a quick adjust. If I had money coming out the wazoo, the Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 Comex is the ultimate of the ultimate, but only because they never made a 116600 Comex version.

There's a solid 4-watch collection on the table. Interesting that the Turtle is by far the least expensive of the bunch and yet somehow doesn't look out of place from this side of the screen. That said, I love the Grand Seiko Spring Drive divers. I've seen a few models up close and the level of detail is quite astounding. I'd buy one of these over the Rolex in a heartbeat, even considering the drop off in value by comparison. I would buy pre-owned anyways so for me not a huge deal.

No offended Bruce, but Rolex being far more expensive than GS is a reflection of their brand equity, how desirable their watches are. It doesn't speak to the quality that GS is able to produce at their price point. I've said it many times. After a certain price point, you're paying mostly for the brand name, and Rolex is the proof of that.

@@BruceWilliams I'd appreciate it if you can share your theory on why you don't think Rolex pricing is related to their brand equity. These GS are made in Japan and Japan ain't no sweatshop. Their cost of living is even higher than the USA. Sure the stainless steel grade that Rolex uses might be more expensive, but not thousands more expensive.
@Peter-tc3ep
@Peter-tc3ep 4 жыл бұрын
PT111111 can’t compare, the GS in person is matt or dull, bulky and not very tool or versatile looking. While the Rolex has a timeless look with a mix of polished metals and brushed. The Rolex is versatile and thin enough to wear under a jacket. Even the adjusting of the two watches gives notice to the better craftsmanship in the Rolex. Then move onto the bracelets for the final blow, not even a comparison, the GS feels loose and cheaper with a large uncomfortable buckle. For cost of manufacturing remember Switzerland is one of the most expensive places to live and highest incomes in the world above the US and well above Japan. Rolex uses gold accents even on their steel models and rhodium verse GS mostly more basic steel. GS does a good job polishing off their cases but if you look deeply they are not the same.
@serendipitous6

It will always be subjective... If paying more for "brand equity" is someone's preference, then that's their gig... There's always an element of satisfaction in either owning that excellent timepiece with "brand equity" or going for another excellent timepiece and having more left over for other pursuits. Trading timepieces isn't my thing, so what I buy, I intend to own or pass along... Resale doesn't figure prominently for all enthusiasts, so I say buy what you like...

Grand Seiko SBGA229 is a masterpiece. But, unfortunately, it is too large and with a bracelet that needs to be improved. IMHO, the case build and polish quality beats Rolex with ease, as well as the movement (love it or not, Spring Drive is currently the most interesting thing on the market, and its smoothness is simply enchanting) but on the other hand - Rolex simply wears better and it has an upper hand when it comes to the bracelet. Anyway, great watch and a great review as well!

Thank you for the video, I am always suprised about the clicking of the bezel !! How does that help under water ?? Or what is the purpose on the earth without the Diving gear !! :-)

Nice, objective review. Despite the fantastic zaratsu polishing i feel that GS divers lack character compared to the big Swiss brand divers . Also in this video the Rolex GMT looks nicer in natural light. The design is more interesting, their is more reflectivity due to the better balance of brushes to polished surfaces and the bracelet looks way more expensive. Just my opinion though!

I think the GS would have more character if they did a polished or Sunday dial. The matte doesn't quite do it

Bruce Williams Yeah good point! Wish GS would put a bit more of the flair that they put into their dress watch dials into their divers’ dials too.

Important to note the GS has a brushed center link whereas the Rolex is polished.

If it were smaller (40-42mm), had greater WR (>200m), it would be amazing. Have seen this one and the titanium version in person, those are my thoughts. ⌚👍

Agree. But this is how they did it on the SKX and some of their other iconic watches.

Great watch. If only it wasn't top heavy and the hands had some polished edges to match the indices like 99% of other GS watches, it would be close to perfect

Hi Bruce ! How can you explain that this Watch has no Ceramic bezel ???? A Seiko King Turtle has a ceramic bezel but not a Grand Seiko ??? It’s a 8-9k watch !! ... does it really matter or is it a negative ??? Thanks !!!

Beautiful , tried this and the titanium version on at the Seiko boutique. The titanium is light but it felt flimsy for the money. This looked better and felt well built, but too heavy so if you are ok to wear it on a rubber strap or NATO it’s fine, on the bracelet for me it was not comfortable, too heavy like a brick on your wrist .This should be a 41- 42 mm tops and lighter weight. Anything over 130 to 140 grams is not going to be comfortable for me.

It bothers me that the lume isn't deep filled, and it's lopsided on certain markers. They really need to make these smaller too.

Nah. This is a divers watch and it’s already too busy. Some may argue that a date function is unnecessary on a dive watch

I would buy this watch in a heart beat and risk a month in the dog house if 3 of the deal breakers were changed. 1) That clasp is way too chunky 2)The crown needs to be 30% shorter 3) Switch out the hands for the ones in the Prospex SLA037. Then it would be IMHO the perfect watch!
