The Great war Island, is basically a historic artillery site, it's location often gave great firing angles for Attackers or Defenders of Belgrade since it looks directly at the river port. It has been used as a staging ground against the city, while at the same time it's proximity to the port also afforded a great foothold for defenders, making it easy to supply etc.

Welcome to Serbia. Just a quick note. Kalemegdan fortress was build in 3- rd century b.c.e.,by the Celts ( it was called Sindidun- White city ) , than Romans came (changing name to Singidunum-White city ) and they added their own touch. Belgrade is actually pronounce Beograd. Beo-White, grad-city.

And just a small correction - Singi were a Celtic tribe and dunum most likely comes from the word for river just like the Danube as we call it here - Dunav. Belgrade or as we call it Beograd means White (Beo) City (Grad) in Serbian.
