Fun fact: The statue of Stephen the Great was made in Romania, in Bucharest and was given as a gift to Chisinau in 1928 to celebrate 10 years from the unification of Bessarabia (eastern Moldova) with Romania. Many people do not know this and think it was made in the R. of Moldova at some more recent date. Stephen the Great is considered a national hero in both Romania and R. Moldova. In Romania it's celebrated because Romania is the direct successor of the former principality of Moldavia, in R. Moldova it's celebrated because it's an indirect successor of the same principality. In the USSR times people in R. Moldova got really brainwashed when it comes to the language they speak (they claimed they do not speak Romanian but a different language called ''moldovan''), their history (they were taught they have nothing in common with the romanians, that the romanians were evil oppressors while the russians were their brothers and crap like that). So don't be surprised if some people (usually the less educated ones, the older people and the russian speakers) will claim they speak another language, that Romania ''stole'' western Moldova from them and other retarded claims based on false facts taught during soviet times.

@marcfaur3 жыл бұрын
Moldova joined Romania in its entirety in the 19th century, but then Russia annexed part of it in the 20th century, just as they do with everything. And that part is now the Republic of Moldova. But there is a strong reunification movement both in RM and Romania. The new Government in Chișinău is also much less Russia-friendly and pro-European and thus our two countries are now much closer. Plus, no matter what you will hear while being there, they are mostly Romanians.

@lavitaebella65613 жыл бұрын
@@zontarr22-zon Basarabia at the beginning was just the Bugeac part, that was for a time under Ottoman occupation. In 1809, after the Romanian, Russian and Austro Hungarian vs Ottoman Empire war, Russian Empire took the Bugeac (or Basarabia) and in 1812 they took also all actual R. Moldova land, and called it all "Basarabia". For this reason we say today Basarabia to R. Moldova. They took/occupied this land from Principatul Moldovei. Moldova was a principate formed from the Roman Dacian province. So after 1812 Moldova was divided in 2 parts, East Moldova and West Moldova. East Moldova with Oltenia and Muntenia created Romanian Kingdom and in 1918 they liberated Transilvania from Hungarian occupation because since Dacian times, here the major population was the latin one (the romanian one exactly), except to Székelyföld. Also in 1918 Romanian Army with Moldavians from West Moldova and Bucovina Region, liberated East Moldova from Russian occupation and people from all Basarabia voted the Union with Romania. So 1918 was the year when was created the Great Romania (In Romanian "România Mare"), the Kingdom of all Romanians, speakers of Romanian language. Romanian population was composed by Moldoveni (also Bucovineni), Olteni, Munteni, Transilvaneni, Maramureşeni, Crişăneni, Dobrogeni and Bănățeni. In 1940 Russia gave an ultimatum to Romania to let Basarabia. With Molotov Von Ribbentrop pact they occupied Basarabia and sadly also a part that was not in the pact, North Bucovina. They didn't respect even the date imposed by the ultimatum to Romania. In fact a lot of Moldavians were escaping in the new Romanian border but Russians arrived befor of the date established and Russian troops killed a lot of people that were trying to cross the new border to escape. In 1941 Romanian Army eliberated again Basarabia and in 1944 at the end of the war, Romania lost the war and USA gave the permission to URSS to get the control of East Europe. In fact in 1945 arrived in Romania 1 milion of Russian troops and Moscow imposed to Romania a comunist party and the comunism ideology. East Moldova became part of SSRs with the name "SSR Moldova" and was created also the "Autonomous SSR Moldova" (Transnistria) where 40% of the population was the Romanian one, and the others were Ukrainians, Russians and a lot of Jews. Bugeac region was gived to SSR Ucraina and also North Bucovina. So Moldova lost the acces to Black Sea. In 1989 URSS begin to collapse and finish in 1991 when were proclamed the autonomous Republics as Ukraina, R. Moldova and others... but there was also a was between R. Moldova (with 83% Romanians) and Transnistria (with ~40% Romanians and others Ukrainians and Russians). Here people didn't want to be part of R. Moldova because the official language of Transnistria was the Russian one and 60% of the population were Ukrainians and Russians. Russia helped Transnistria to became a separate state with the 14th Russian Army. So today Transnistria is a separatist country and the Romanian population decreased to 33%. Russians want to take all the control of the region, so they closed a lot of Romanian schools and imposed the Russian language and the Chirilic Alphabet. So today R. Moldova is a piece of Moldova Region but with no Transnistria. Transnistria is a separatist country and Russian Army is still here.

I have had nothing but good experiences there and with great people, that are just trying to get by in a hard environment. I also have lived in the Pacific and in Indonesia and so I also don't narrow mindedly compare Moldova like most people do, to their own country, its simply not fair and its not realistic. I've called Romania home for 5 years now, so I know what it's like just over the border as I have been a few times. Chisinau is a great little city, it has its good and bad also like Bucharest, but that's the character of a place and that's why people travel, to explore a place and learn and enjoy, not to bag it out. Romanians and Moldovans are the same people, they are both Romanians that speak Romanian. Thanks to Russia they are separate now because after WWII Russia punished Romania for being allied to Germany and occupied Moldova during the time of the Soviet Union and then made Moldova it's own country as a buffer just like they did with Ukraine. It's both interesting and sad that currently, Moldova with population of about 3 million is the poorest country in Europe, while Romania with a population of 19 million are the richest in all of southeast Europe. Also, Moldovans speak both Romanian and Russian because they were forced to learn Russian in school and to use Russian as their official language during the time they were part of the Soviet Union.

Hi Steve & Ivana, Are you guys going over to Transnistria since you are so close to it? This is a strip of country which does not want to be part of Moldova. It is a breakaway state which is located to the northeast of Moldova.

I gotta say, Moldova is really underrated. Been living here for all my life and for a foreigner with some money everything is REALLY Cheap. That liver pie costs 50 cents.

Hy!!! Come to Tg Jiu also. Here you can see Constantin Brancusi monumental sculptural ensemble. Brâncusi is considered the founder of expressionist monumental art. Is like 300 km from Bucharest...

Maybe my comment was deleted because I added a link but it was not because of commercial purposes. It was a suggestion for you guys to visit the unique in the world underground wine cellars city from Milestii Mici where each street has a name from a grape/wine variety. I haven't see any travel vlogger yet to have visited there. It would be a first and totally worthed.

I understand that Moldova is least travelled by tourists, seeing that it’s so clean and organized.
@CarlosCatari3 жыл бұрын
I was there last week, I come from Canada, and it is really surprising how clean it is, for sure it's cleaner than Montreal, Canada (even though that's not too difficult). Lovely place Moldova!

I agree Steve, who likes liver placinta in the morning ? However it must have been nice, if well prep . As Ivana said, it was yum. I grew up eating on a regular basis chicken liver fried on pan with cottage cheese and tomatoes. But never in a pie. I would try this Moldavian way.....
@irinaveverita15923 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't recommend you to do this. Go to "La plăcinte" there is much better! And yeah, if you want to buy "a half" of smg, never show the way like he did. Here it has another meaning, and it's not a good one!

You both can make a comparison between Romania (being in European Union since 2007 ,ex satellite of USSR until 1989) and Moldova , not member E.U. (still being under russian influence since 1940) what is your opinion, JetLag Warriors ?

Dear warrior, indecent underarms you show us. I am a Romanian lady from 30 years of being Canadian from Toronto. I did not see Moldova, we use to call it Basarabia, a pretty name. Unfortunately, I did not travel anymore back home for 10 years being a lonely senior lady. I like your channel congrats. I am going to watch you further! Stay healthy and enjoy. Love Iris
