We love Kelantan!
We just arrived in Kota Bharu, the more conservative city in Malaysia. It got a very different vibes than Kuala Lumpur, and we love it so far.
Check us out discovering Kota Bharu:
-exploring the famous (Pasar) Siti Khadijah Market where we tried kuih akok,
-trying a traditional Kelantanese food (Malaysian food) at Nasi Ulam Cikgu where it served the crispiest catfish with some budu, sambal, and tempoyak, and
-visiting handicraft museum and world war 2 museum in Kota Bharu.
We ended our vlog by the Kota Bharu riverside, and flew our drone in Kota Bharu.
We hope this Kota Bharu travel guide can help you plan your trip, and decide on things to do in Kelantan, things to do in Kota Bharu, and things to do in Malaysia, as well as guiding you towards the BEST Malaysian food in the country. Check out more of our Malaysia travel vlog 2020 where we share our travel vlog, food vlog, and more!

As a kelantanese, here is my tips on eating sour mango. - Put soy sauce in a small dipping plate + a teaspoon of sugar + some belacan + one tiny cili padi or normal small red chilli. You can add a tiny pinch of coarse salt if you like more salty. Normally belacan, soy sauce and sugar already enough for me. That's how my late father taught me how to eat it😊 For Akok, I normally eat it as dessert after a meal or just as tea time. Coconut grater: you sit on it and cut the old brownish coconut open into half and grate the half coconut on the graters. Be careful it require a lot of force to grate with the grater before the machine was invented. The coconut grater is used to grate coconut then we pressed the coconut and make it into coconut milk (santan).

The hard seed like bean must be jering. Jering is like the father to the petai (stinky bean). The grandfather to the petai is the kerdas. If petai is on the scale of 5 in making your urine smelly, the jaring is a 9 and the kerdas past 10. Like petai, the jering and kerdas are consume so as to make your rice more appetising.

When you're in Kota Bharu, go visit the museum, local palace museums, local handicrafts such as batik, songket clothes, silverwares and bronze wares making, kite or wau making, wood carvings, the beaches, traditional Malays buildings and houses, etc. Kota Bharu is the place where you could find many Malay traditional and cultural elements, I must say. You can see all this traditional and cultural heritage statewide in Kelantan. I advise you to take this opportunity while you're there.

Finally trying Akok! Good job guys! You guys should try to find the one at a kampung stall where they cook the Akok live using coconut shell and husk. It taste better right after cook. The ulam you try to bite is called Jering (a type of stinky bean). It’s kinda tough to eat especially the ripe one as it gets harder as it get more ripe. To be able to bite into one of this, you should try the one which is not that ripe. It will be easier to bite and crunchy. The taste is somewhat bitter and the best way to eat it is with budu + tempoyak. The coconut shredder you saw in the museum is the traditional one where you sit on it and grind the coconut flesh onto the metal tip. Kelantan is also famous for its Wau Bulan (large kite) which is played after harvesting season and during windy time. During a hot day, try your self some Rantau Panjang style ice cream with lots of topping to go with it. It is easy to find along the roadside where the sellers sold the ice cream on bike. The ice cream usually comes with bread crumbs, peanut, and jelly. Percik is the cooking style where you grill the meat (chicken or fish or beef) and then cover with the sauce. Kelantan style percik uses coconut milk as the base of the gravy and poured onto the grilled meat. Yati Ayam Percik restaurant’s has the best Ayam Percik for you to try with Nasi Kerabu or just plain white rice. Before the occupation of westerners, locals use Jawi as a style of writing in Bahasa Melayu using Arabic alphabet. Jawi is still taught in national and islamic religious school and it differs fro Arabic in sense of how you write and the meaning of the words.

Kinda hard to find these days. Consider it rare..even in Kelantan. Usually packed in a cone-shaped banana leaf wrapping, eaten for breakfast or late supper. The rice is soft and more compact, but not as compact as nasi impit. The 'lauk' is usually prawn with a little bit of gravy. Sometimes they put fish too. Originally it's made for younger children and the elderly who can't chew as much.

I guess she's gonna grab another pack of akok later. Hope u guys will come across traditional akok stall and experience the making process. Gonna be all smokey affair.

Welcome to Kelantan! I hope I can be your local Abang Ajib which I could help you around. I am not that well-verse with location since I leave in KL for a long time. but it might helps. the sour manggoes need a sauce. the easiest way is to dip it into bowl of mixed of sugar, salt (small portion) , hot chilly and soy sauce.

Akok is a dessert, made from eggs, flour, palm sugar, coconut milk. Basically it’s like a baked custard. You should also try murtabak raja, buah tanjung, jala mas, kuih tahi itik among all. Also try nasi berlauk and nasi tumpang.

You should take a visit to the Kelantan State Museum. Kelantan history is very interesting. Used to be a prominent Buddhist Kingdom before Islam came. Can see several Malay Buddhist and Pre-Islamic era cultures still preserved in Kelantan State Museum such as the ‘wau’ (traditional kite), Kelantan Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet), Petalawati Bird replica (some sort of garuda), etc. Oh and Kelantan used to be ruled by Female several times hundred years ago.

You guys went to a wrong section of the Pasar Siti Khadijah to find kuehs. The kueh section is actually at the ground floor of the annex building. It is a smaller 2 storey building next to the main building. It is on the right hand side if you're coming from the main bus station. The second floor houses many stalls for dine-in. Kelantan Laksa and Laksam are dishes to try there. Got to go there again. Good luck! Another food place to check out is Pasar Kubang Pasu. It is about 150m from Masjid Muhammadi (KB main mosque). You ought to try Nasi Belauk Ikan Aya(tuna I think) there. They have nasi kerabu, nasi dagang, nasi tumpang etc as well. Eventhough there are less variety of kuehs over there, but the quality is better. Jalan2 cari makan!

Ivana made good choice to get yellow mangoes instead of super sour small hard green ones, I think the lady was surprised Steve wanted 1 kg of the sour unripe ones..lol so many to consume, hope you did not throw it away..healthy food, can slice it thinly to long stripes and make Thai style glass noodle salad dish or rojak style or dip into sugary salty dipping or like Asam boi powder provided by some ready cut fruit's vendors. Amazing drone view and editing and really both Ivana and Steve both very hard-working checking out places, museums, history, culture, food, etc.and capturing all to produce compact vlogs..both very hard-working..lots physical and mental work..like an 8am to 6pm job few days a week..
