Another point about communities since you mentioned the keys: in addition to not having anything like keys, in FFXIV if your party has someone who has never done that dungeon or raid before, everyone gets bonus EXP and money when beating it. So instead of being potentially penalized when your party has new players, you're encouraged and rewarded for helping them.

Mechanics where 1 person can make 1 mistake and wipe a whole raid are probably the dumbest thing about the genre as a whole, it's terrible game design. It isn't fun for the raid and it especially isn't fun for the person who makes the mistake and over the years it's contributed heavily to toxicity and fracturing in/of the community as a whole and seriously damaged engagement with raiding (something WoW in particular has claimed several times they want to improve yet they still put this shit in raids...). Everyone has that one (or more) friend who is a bit shit at the game but you want to bring them anyway because...well...they are your friend and you want to play with them. Most groups also have at least some players who are above average and they should, if they want to, be able to pick up the slack of the less skilled to an extent and I don't believe that this means every fight has to be a cake walk. The current design really has no place in a community focused game IMHO.

@Valek O'Keefe I actually agree and think it's ok to have one shot/wipe mechanics, it's a fine challenge. I genuinely hate the timers and key depletion systems of m+ though. These are the punishments that are not supposed to be in an mmo. They make ppl toxic and start punishing other players.
@errantpassenger3 жыл бұрын
@@memitim171 hard disagree there chief. if you're shit at the game you should have to get better if you want to clear the hard stuff. 1 person fucking up wiping the raid enhances the teamwork aspect, and makes the consistency of really good players stand out. being able to get carried through raids will only make the shitters even worse

I love the attitude people have towards FFXIV. Being angry at Blizzard all the time isnt a pleasant feeling, and now instead of malding about patch dates or systems I can just take my energy elsewhere to enjoy myself. Not to say I've quit WoW, but having a choice feels better than being stuck with Blizzard when you go without a patch for 8 months. However, FFXIV lacks content creators though, twitch viewers for the game are low (when asmon or rich arent live). Obviously some people see that as a good thing, but imagine a Barny64 or Captaingrim style video for Ashes of Creation or Shadowbringers. I hope asmon's presence inspires people to make content for the game because there's untapped potential there I feel. It reminds me of the launch of classic and I'm optimistic. B^)

The fact that you are so popular scared me, because your words would definitely have an impact on the community and the game. But seeing you actually enjoying it while still finding some of the less ideal things is very nice. I adore this game, I have a tattoo of it and I’ve spent so many hours playing it, and I would’ve been kind of sad if you hated it. I really hope you enjoy all of it. I have laughed, I have cried, I’ve been angry and upset. The characters and the story end up meaning SO much that sometimes it rips out your heart. I think it's more to do with the general theme that FF14's story hits again and again--that while there are exceptions, by and large, even your enemies are ultimately just people, either doing bad things due to circumstances forced upon them or due to misunderstanding or ignorance. Even the bigger-picture villains are themselves sympathetic, and not in a way that feels forced or cliche.

@broco11633 жыл бұрын
I think another element is the balance. Since FFXIV doesn't have 4 borrowed power systems and 30+ dps specs to balance with separate talent trees, their endgame dps meters only have about a 10% deviation, rather than the 50%+ deviation you see in WoW from best to worst spec. You will never have a WoW raid interaction like this in FFXIV: "oh you're playing Necrolord Feral? GTFO of my raid." "But I like Feral and I like Necrolord, I want to play what I like." "But if I bring you to the raid, your spec will underperform as a rule, sorry, bye." That also creates toxicity. Meanwhile in FFXIV: "Oh you're playing bard? Sure it's not samurai levels of DPS, but only slightly less, and you bring raid buffs, welcome aboard" Individual assholes aside, the systems themselves can predictably create foreseeable macro toxicity, and should be adjusted to prevent it.

Forgiveness is not a natural trait in humanity. In point of fact, the Japanese, though they have stole some of their greatest concepts from christianity and project it as some kind of humanistic atheism, have to admit that they are calling out to something greater than themselves. Every other religion in the world doesn't have that feeling of going down to the bottom, lowest part of yourself and not falling into that same temptation. Buddha's technique for rising above the drama is deceptive, for example, because it hides a form of pride.

The theme of redemption and forgiveness really is a deeply entrenched motto in FF14's plot. Every expansion has it for so many characters.
@hiten_style3 жыл бұрын
I would say Cooperation in addition to that. Cooperation between people with different goals and different values is such a strong theme throughout the whole game. Finding common ground and agreeing to make progress towards a common goal. That is also something that rubs off on you a little bit if you immerse yourself in the story. At the same time, I hope that people don't interpret that as saying that being about competition and war makes WoW a bad story or a bad game. Almost all the greatest stories are based around conflict. Consuming media that is about conflict at its core doesn't automatically mean that it changes you.

Frenemies. Very popular theme in Japan
@Zakading3 жыл бұрын
@@hiten_style Very, very true.Even just looking at the post-ARR stuff, one of the main antagonists from that ends up being an incredibly valuable ally later on, despite literally every character hating his greedy monetarist ass (for good reason). The game still has plenty of legitimately evil antagonists, that don't get redeemed and honestly don't deserve redemption (the Pope, Zenos etc.) and several more that are clearly just evil assholes, but have good reason to be and manage to invoke pity for their fates (Yotsuyu and Elidibus, for example) so it's definitely not all just sunshin and happiness, but there's always a push, even in the most cold-hearted war scenarios, to minimize a loss of life and find a peaceful solution. If I remember correctly, some Garlean soldiers that get captured at some point are even shocked that they're still being treated like people and many NPCs inherently have shown signs of ignoring allegiance to save lives, healing Garlean soldiers after battle alongside their own people. TL;DR war in plot isn't bad, but it's a lot more interesting if the story and characters try to avoid unnecessary ones

Asmon, I feel a burning need to apologize. I'm a long-time XIV player who learned about you from your reaction to a XIV video, and at the time, I thought your critiques for the video were unfair and biased. I looked around for some info on you and quickly deduced you must have been some kind of WoW-diehard who hated XIV because it wasn't WoW and a whole bunch of other negative stuff. But ever since the Endwalker trailer reaction being pretty fair and this entire sequence of making an honest attempt to play the game, enjoying XIV for what it's worth, and providing genuinely good content that is not only enjoyable but also lets me think twice about things of XIV I just took for granted (I never considered the dialogue delivery before, good catch), all this has made me realize that I was quick and unfair in my own judgement. You are a perfectly cool dude who made me realize that in my desire to avoid the toxicity of WoW, I'd become a little toxic myself. So my bad, Asmongold, and I look forward to more of your content.

For me hearing of this, my expectation was "If he's streaming it, the chat's probably gonna rile up a lot of negativity, and the whole thing's just gonna be miserable and he won't last a week" but "I think if he approaches it like the outspoken Classic WoW guy I often agree with in videos, I think he'll have a good time". I was quite happy to see the latter prove true but ALSO that his chat's been pretty darned great, a big departure from how twitch chat usually is in general, especially for an audience so big. Usually you hit 4-digit audience count (yet alone 200k) and it's nothing but toxicity and copypasta spam, even with a positive or chill streamer. Also props to SE for cracking down on the griefers.

About flying mounts - at first when they introduced flying in Heavensward, only a few mounts that would make sense they could fly - as you said - were able to do so, but players kept pestering the devs to give flight to more of them, esp ones that were hard to get, so they added more and more and finally all of them were able to fly
@LunaMirage3 жыл бұрын
Yea, it was quite annoying having to switch mounts. Especially if you liked a particular mount and then knew it couldn't fly..... In Wow you can have an addon for it, you can change your UI a lot more, and etc. You can change a lot in FF14, but it's still also a console game..... It's important to remember that it's still also a console game and that even on PC I personally don't really want to have to install 3rd party applications to enjoy the game.
@jaeusa1603 жыл бұрын
FF14 being what it is though, writes up lore for practically everything, no matter how silly or ridiculous or incredulous some cases may be. Mostly it's just "Sure, it flies due to Wind Aether" and sometimes it's a bit more elaborate. Likewise, various flying mecha note their weapon systems are disabled or cosmetic to address the logic of "Wait, why can't I fire missiles". I wonder if he's seen the X-Mas bear that throws exploding magical presents...
@camil-jr3 жыл бұрын
The whole lore concept of flight in FFXIV centres around utilizing aether currents to fly anyway, so really it doesn't even matter what you're using to fly, it made more lore sense to have all mounts fly capable.
@SethalaTheGamer3 жыл бұрын
I believe they made all mounts fly around the same time they added swimming to the game. So, every mount needed an animation for swimming. Since swimming animations usually work for flying animations, they could easily just make every mount use the same animation for both and not have to do any real work to make flying mounts possible. (There are a few mounts that have distinct flying and swimming animations, of course; not all of them use the same for both. But a lot of them do, or at least have very minor variations between the two.)

It was a nice change in many ways, you could use the mounts you aesthetically liked to use without caring about flying or not, plus it has led to some comedic things with them playing around at how to make certain 'ground' mounts fly. Overall one of those changes that you wonder why it wasn't always the norm.
@Mekose3 жыл бұрын
The best selling point story imo is that when they released one of the new races, they said they didn't have the development time to make every headpiece work for their unique head shapes, so no glasses, big helmets, etc. The community didn't have a backlash, but said they wanted all those options added eventually. So a few of the devs took their free time and worked over the weekends to manually adjust the existing head pieces to fit the new races. I've never seen such incredibly attentive and passionate devs from ANY game, indie or AAA, let alone an MMO. For starters, Yoshi-P does a monthly live stream where he talks about content and does Q/A. I remember one time someone suggested a small QoL change; and I watched Yoshi wrote it down on his notepad on the spot; and within a week that QoL change was added to the game. It still blows my mind.

One of the things I had to learn was that "hitting level 80" doesn't mean the same thing as WoW. In FFXIV, you can play every class on the same character. No need for alts! And the crafting is very deep, not like wow at all. I love it.

The best part of leveling alts in FF14, is all the massive bonus xp you get doing it. You can level an alt in half the time or less, compared to leveling your highest level job. I'm not a regular on your channel but the almighty algorithm showed this to me and I find the analysis fairly interesting. One thing to know about the GCD and off-GCD abilities that the game doesn't really tell you about: Even off-GCD abilities have a tiny GCD in themselves. What that means is that you cannot fit an unlimited amount of oGCDs in a single GCD, and that is also where a possible delay is coming from. Generally the GCD is 2.5 seconds long (minus haste, and there are a couple abilities at 1.5s), and in each one you can fit 2 oGCD abilities. Any more then that and you will block your next GCD ability. The same goes for potions, although they are even "slower" then a regular oGCD ability. That also means that in some fights you will have to figure out when to activate certain oGCD abilities so you can fit everything you need. Another thing the game doesn't really touch is slide-casting and the action queue. Slide-casting: Basically about half a second before a cast ends you can start moving and the cast will still finish. This is not a delay per se, this is by design. Action queue: When you press an ability in the middle or towards the end of a previous cast, that cast will start immediately once the cast is finished or the GCD is over. This makes it a lot easier to chain combos without looking at the GCD all day. With oGCD abilities there is also a peculiarity there in that they don't cancel when you start casting the next GCD ability. I think you played Warrior so it's hard to describe there. But let's take a Scholar for an example. I cast Broil, take someone into my target, press one of my oGCD abilities still during the cast, and then go back to the enemy and hammer away on the next broil. What ends up happening is that once the first cast is done, it immediately sets off the oGCD, but also starts casting the second cast at the same time. Unfortunately this is not explained in the game but something you just figure out yourself over time.
