39:58 he realize that the rock his friend gave for “good fortune” is fake, its floating
@ActuallyAnanya28 күн бұрын
A couple of points for extra context: - in the poor family's conversation during their night at the rich house, the mom mentions that the rich family is nice because they have the luxury of being nice. When you are poor, you unfortunately have to put survival before niceties. - the rich mother is not on drugs, she's just incredibly naive and pretty much a trophy wife, the marriage probably involved her family's business merging with the rich husband's. I don't think the husband held much actual love for her. When they were messing around on the couch, they were basically doing roleplay as the driver Min and the girl they think he was supplying drugs to, and getting off on that idea. It is pretty messed up, and shows they aren't actually as nice as they come across. - When the Jessica says Min wouldn't be in this situation, it's not just that he wouldn't scheme. It's that his family has always been significantly wealthier than theirs, enough to go to university and then to study abroad. Again, the luxury of not having to live in survival mode. - when their house floods, Kevin notices the rock that Min gifted them floating in the water. That means the rock, which is supposed to bring them good fortune, is actually hollow - so it really is a metaphor lol. Ironically though, the rock being hollow might be the reason Kevin survived during the climax. - Kevin making enough money for him to buy that house is just impossible. It was already impossible before (it would take him 125 years at least to make the money needed) but now he has a criminal record attached to a high-profile case. It's a dream he'll never achieve. - there are some more subtle things mentioned in conversation, about the things that both the main family as well as the old housekeeper's husband used to do. Korea had its economic boom in the early 90s, but had an insane crash in 1998 when the market fell by 33% of the GDP. Millions of hardworking people with their own skills fell under the poverty line during this. A lot of families invested hugely into trendy businesses that imploded when the trend passed. Both the main dad and the basement guy invested in Taiwanese castella cake businesses, which was a real thing, only to suffer when that bubble burst. - finally, a lot of Korean movies are depressing because of this concept called Han, which doesn't have a real translation in English, but is like a mixture of grief, rage and resentment. Many believe Han is core to Korea's national identity, and looking to their past its easy to understand why. Japanese colonialism, a civil war, multiple military dictatorships and tragedies brought about by corrupt governments. The first Korean movie I ever saw is called Peppermint Candy, and it does a great job at showing how going through so many of these events would break even the kindest of spirits.

The rich family's "obsession" with america isn't just limited to that family. It's a very common perception in Asia that if something is "imported" or bought from Western countries, it is automatically of better quality and more expensive. "American" is also basically the catch-all term for anything (and anyone white) from white people countries.

Why are Korean movies so depressing? There's a Korean word that's almost untranslatable. 'Han'. It means something like engaged desperation and grief over how unfair life is. 'Han' is said to be the Korean national character.
@maliii26628 күн бұрын
Yep and it stems from the Japanese occupation of Korea and the Korean people basically being stripped of their identities. The sentiment can still be felt in various forms and contexts. (Sorry for bad English)

For as smart as the family was, they made a lot of dumb mistakes. Letting the woman in to begin with but also not finding a way to work together with her and the husband which I know is the “crab in a bucket” mentality at play but it seems like they screwed themselves out of a potential long-term gain by being short sighted once they were in the house. Also the fact they all fell down the stairs and didn’t immediately try to get back out of sight will always annoy me… also, if they weren’t gonna work together then they should’ve immediately taken out the wife and husband and left their bodies to decompose in the secret cellar. Like, we need to either go all the way or not go there at all but leaving loose ends was also not smart lol.

The flood scene brought so much awareness to these underground types of housing in Korea that they are now going to be phasing them out completely. Some years ago after this film came out they had horrible flooding that resulted in casualties with that type of housing that prompted the change. "The halfway underground banjiha home figures prominently in South Korean director Bong Joon Ho‘s dark comedy “Parasite,” a stark depiction of the rock-bottom existence the movie’s Kim family tries to claw out of and then descends back into. Bong has said the tantalizing in-betweenness of the semi-basement was a major inspiration in making his thriller exploring class disparities, which has connected with audiences around the world and made history at Sunday’s Oscars by becoming the first non-English-language film to win best picture. “Banjiha is a space with a peculiar connotation.... It’s undeniably underground, and yet you want to believe it’s above ground,” Bong said last May after the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. “There’s also the fear that if you sink any lower, you may go completely underground.” Bong said the film’s translators struggled to find the right word in English and in French because there wasn’t a direct equivalent. They ultimately settled on “semi-basement.”" This comes from an article on the LA Times website titled, "The halfway underground homes of ‘Parasite’ are real spaces of desperation and dreams" There is an article about it on the Guardian website titled, "Seoul to phase out Parasite-style semi-basement flats after storm deaths" if you want to read about it. Sorry we can't link anything on here anymore.

Wow, thanks for sharing! I never knew about homes like these before this movie, but I do not live in Korea so I figured it was cultural. Very interesting that even in SK they were a new idea to those who never had to live in such a situation. The massive change in elevation in that scene from the richest to the poorest "levels" always shocks me every time I see this movie.

It’s a sci-fi but it definitely counts as horror too because some of the things in that movie are horrific. You guys would be super disturbed. However, if you’re looking for other kinds of horror movies that aren’t sci-fi I’ve got a few good ones here too: -The Strangers -The Descent -Insidious (chapter 2 is the best one tbh) -The Nun 2 (specifically the second one cause the first sucks) -Ouija Origin of Evil -The Uninvited -Grave Encounters -Hell House LLC
