I'm familiar with the rules of mah jongg. The version they are playing is like gin rummy, but with those tiles. You have to have a certain combo of runs (sequential numbers), 3 or 4 of a kind, etc. So in that scene where Rachel and Eleanor are playing each other, Rachel had a winning hand, but due to her game theory background she knew the last tile that she picked up would give her the win and that it was also the tile Eleanor needed to win as well. Rachel gave up the tile when she placed it down and Eleanor took it. When Rachel showed her hand, she was showing Eleanor, I had the chance to win everything, but I'm giving you the win of this tile as well as having your son back. In Rachel's monologue she is letting Eleanor know that it came at the cost of her acknowledging that the "win" was given to her by a poor girl, both in game and reality.

Nick's job is actually associate history professor, if I remember correctly. The reason Rachel never figures out he has money is because he chooses to live in a one bedroom apartment. He even ests most of his meals in the cafeteria. And never buys truly expensive things. Looking back after she funds out, she realised that all though there are no labels on his clothes, everything is very well tailored. In the end, the only Nick's mom comes around is because of who Rachel is😂

Yep. Grew up in a semi rural middle class suburb outside of LA, so I had friends from various groups. And yep, this is what they were called by their family who lived in the ethnic parts of The City. And they would get called Oreo, Banana, Coconut, Apple, etc. The White kids were either called worse or nothing and ignored. It is Wild. Three of my Asian friends told me about the hierarchy within the Asian community, like how Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are at the top and it goes down from there. And two of them were Chinese with relatives in Hong Kong and how without saying anything or dressing different, they were Immediately pegged as American/Western. My Korean friend said it's true for his family, too. When I told some of my other friends this, they said it happens to them when they go to visit in their family's country, too. I'm like, Dang

Rachel LOSES the mahjong game so Eleanor could win. From what I understand Rachel and Eleanor needed the same winning tile, and Rachel had it. Rachel knew this and instead of keeping it for herself, she gave it away, knowing Eleanor would take it. It's such a badass move and its to show Eleanor that she was wrong about her, and that she is willing to give up her passion (Nick) so that he could be happy and not have to turn his back on his family.

Hi Cory! I’m from Singapore and available just fyi. Anyways, I have a friend who actually is extremely wealthy I feel like a peasant next to her even though my family is financially okay by Singapore standards. She lives in a gated community where the 1 percenters live that has mansions, condos, restaurants, boutiques and every amenity imaginable. She lives in a condo and drives a golf cart to her parent’s mansion for dinner every evening. They have a yacht in their backyard. We once watched crazy rich asians in her parents home theatre and she turned to me and said, “I wish I lived like that.” and I was like, bitch you better be joking. Her family is extremely humble and nice too

@@JT-cm9dipretty much! Being “rich” in Singapore would mean you’d be able to afford a landed property (not enough land= expensive) or a condominium with luxury amenities, both which cost millions. Alternatively, some are able to afford historical buildings (look up Singapore colonials and shophouses), much like nyc pre war buildings(?) which is what my family lives in. However there are the CRAZY rich which is what my friend is. Look up “Sentosa Cove” and you’ll probably be able to see the kind of properties and the cost to live in that gated community.

Notice how ingenious the costume design is. During the scene when Rachel was shopping, her mother told her that strips are for funerals. Fast forward to the bachelorette scent and Astrid was wearing stripes while they bury the dead fish, and metaphorically burying her marriage as well.

That "boat hotel" is Marina Bay Sands. It's very popular and has an infinity pool on top, which is probably its biggest selling point. We stayed there once for our trip and during that visit, we mostly stayed at the hotel and enjoyed ourselves lmao. I don't remember it being that expensive back then, but it probably became much more expensive now, especially after this movie.

Fun fact, a lot of jobs in Singapore are IN THE AIRPORT, Singapore realized the place with the most people and tourist…is the airport! So they made a lot of things and incorporated it into a mall/hotel/ place for work for most people in Singapore since it is a small country. The building with the boat is a hotel with the largest infinity pool. Hence the big boat. Nice place to stay in! Also the part where the information spreads fast, comes from how everyone from Singapore knows everyone else in Singapore.

haha as a fellow singaporean myself, its true that some people are filthy rich. but a majority of us do live comfortably in the middle class and it is a struggle sometimes to keep up with the inflating costs in singapore. of course, theres more to us than just being rich in money. We are rich in race, culture and identity which makes our country greatly different from others. I bet none of you knew that just a few decades ago, Singapore was poor in every aspect with no resources and weak after the Japanese occupation. But we rose from that and achieved prosperity and religious harmony. I encourage you to visit Singapore when you get the chance, the diversity and culture here is beyond your imagination.

So the children in the beginning of the movie are Nick and Astrid and they're cousins. And as to why everyone was amazed that the grandma showed up to the wedding was because she doesn't ever go to events. She was really only there because Astrid asked her coshe because she was hurting from her fight with Michael in the car. It's a small but important moment because it was stated multiple times that Nick was the grandmother's favorite. But the scene shows that she still does love and care about Astrid very much.

The movie was intentionally made on a lower budget than it could have been precisely because the screenwriter Kevin Kwan, who also wrote the book it's based on, wanted to show Hollywood that Asian-American studios could be commercially viable. The budget was so low that Michelle Yeoh (Eleanor) loaned the emerald ring from her own collection. In what is probably a coincidence, Crazy Rich Asians and Black Panther both came out in 2018. While they are very different films, both put marginalized communities in the spotlight in major release Hollywood films.

People who are really rich aren't typically jackasses because their lives don't revolve around how much money they have (they have so much of it). While nouveau riche people, like celebs (you know, millionaires), wear their money on their sleeves and try really hard to make their wealth noticable, because in some way their wealth is fleeting. In asian cultures, nouveau riche will care about how much money your family has. The really rich people care about what your ancestors did for the country, bloodlines, purity (yes, it sounds crazy), etc...

Y'all, Singapore is The place to have a hangout or move to when you feel the Western countries are taking too much of your money through taxes. It's why Johnny Depp left France (other than his divorce). He said France always had their hands in his pockets and he bailed. Plus, he's an Anglophile. But it's the top reason wealthy people leave America now. And one of the places they flee to is Singapore. I can't remember his name (Sergei? something), but the guy who was involved in the creation of Facebook and sued Zuckerberg for his share of the billions made from it, got his money, packed his wallet, and moved to Singapore. Don't know if he's still there, but if I recall, he gave an interview and said he researched places to go, tried Singapore, and loved it because it was The best place to be wealthy, live a great lifestyle, and have your money left alone for the most part. It's ostensibly the new Hong Kong, which was a huge destination for wealthy people for the same reason, but Hong Kong had this East-West appeal due to all the time it was a part of the British Empire. But when it went back to China at the turn of the last century, the majority of the wealthy Hong Kong people packed their businesses, money, and well educated families and ran as fast as they could go. They naturally went to North America and Europe, but a good number of them went to Singapore, which is filled with Chinese people who speak English and other European languages. I think someone told me Taiwan is also a place they fled to, just not in the same numbers. From what I'm told, China has Shanghai as their wealth zone and hoped to keep Hong Kong, but no one was buying their promises and bailed. Not sure if the people who stayed regret it or not, but I kinda fell out of that topic after a while and moved on to others. But, it's extremely fascinating. There's a guy who's a KZbinr who's family came to America from Vietnam and struggled Here. He did well in school and set out to get rich in NY. The lifestyle was crazy and he eventually got burned out from the rat race and fast competitive living from having so much money. So, he took off to Singapore for a vacation, realized he was happy there, came back to quit his job, pack up, and say goodbye to his family, and moved there. He made a whole video about it and it's excellent. Eventually, his parents moved there with him and he's not planning on coming back anytime soon because he says it's calmer and psychologically better there. I found his video while on a kick watching videos of different people who left America and moved to other countries. I ended up watching mostly videos about them moving to Asia because they tend to be Far happier than other places. It's incredibly insightful and fun. You guys should Definitely check out those videos. I'll post the one with the Vietnamese guy if I find it again. Btw, great video as always

I think they might, because it kinda left us at a cliffhanger in the movie.
