Our RSM used to tell us it was designed by an officer’s wife and was selected in a competition as it had the most brass to polish!

When I joined the RUC reserve in the mid 80's I was issued with a 37 pattern haversack, dyed black, with a single strap allowing it to be worn as a "shoulder bag" or slung across the body from one shoulder to the opposite hip. it was rarely carried, maybe on a range day for your sandwiches and waterproof trousers, or on a "big" day when you were stuck on a point.

Interesting, makes sense. The UDR used blackened 1937 Pattern when first formed, so it's possible when it was surplus to their requirements it was passed on to the RUC.

There are photos of Tankers in Kenya ( during some post WWII unpleasantness ) with Black Boot polished 37 pattern webbing, belt, one Universal pouch, and a Brace strap supporting it, they were carrying Sterling SMGs of course. Lots of odd gags are possible.

@@RiflemanMoore my dad and uncle used it when in the UDR in the early days. I used it in the Irish guards army cadets in the early 80s. And my dad and other uncle used parts of it in the RUC as the gentleman above said as a lunch bag . When my uncle Sergeant David Brown was kill by the ira bastard's in 82 I remember his black bag being used to keep his hat in for years by family members.And for year's I used an royal air force backpack as a school bag.i still have it in boot of the car as a tool bag.

Excellent video, I've been mulling over the idea of putting together a set of pre war dated webbing. It'll take too long to track down in fear. I'd bought some binoculars for my collection and the case was dated 1938,lucky find there.thats what gave me the idea

What was the original or most common colour of 1937 pattern? I always see different colour variations with some troops wearing green webbing and some wearing beige or tan.
@davidbrennan660
@davidbrennan660 3 жыл бұрын
It varies depending on when, where and who was using it..... sometimes ( very rarely) it was used as a disruptive pattern camouflage scheme using one than one rather than a solid colour..... going on some era photos unless they used paint...... as with most things above the power of God, fury of the CSM permitting of course. Research can be fun.

When you live out of a Small Haversack, you soon wish it was called the “slightly larger pack”... trust me. Wearing it high on the back is the most comfortable way of carrying it, even though with the Gas Cape rolled on it and the Tin Hat worn it is a nuisance when prone. Nice Aluminium water bottle, impressive.......of course the era British water bottle is rather poor compared to other era European and American designs. One Dent on the Enamel covered steel bottle destroys it and likely causes it to leak..... done that just falling on the darn thing in an Assault course...... go buy another or more likely get it from the collection and buy another one..
