There aren't enough great words for Tammi Joe's calm voice during this harrowing experience. But, I have to say, the actual PILOT who was flying the plane was the 1st officer. Tammi was handling the communications, while her co-pilot did the actual flying. He was also a military veteran with lots of flying time prior to this experience. Darren should be praised for his job, as well.

Decompression/Depressurisation Events - Ejected, not Sucked Out! As a airline crew member and a former emergency procedures instructor, I would love for the wider public to understand that in one of these Decompression/Depressurisation Events there is no one or nothing being 'sucked out' of the cabin. The notion of items/individuals being sucked out is a misnomer that has been around probably as long as pressurised airliners. There is no vacuum at altitude nor does the speed of air flowing over the fuselage past any opening or breech cause a vacuum sufficient to 'suck' anything out. What occurs is the very high pressure inside that fuselage escaping through an opening. How large the breech is, be it a door or window, will determine how quickly and with how much force the cabin altitude reaches the aircraft altitude. A pressurised aircraft cabin has similar dynamics to an unopened soda can or bottle if the container is gently agitated, to increase the pressure to a similar pressure on the aircraft cabin, and then a hole is made in the container the contents are forced out at high speed and force until the pressure inside the vessel reaches the same pressure outside the vessel. The same is true in an aircraft cabin depressurising due to failure in the integrity of that sealed environment. A large hole such as that caused when the cargo door underwent an uncommanded opening on a United Airlines Boeing 747shortly after take off from Honolulu, this resulted in the loss of a couple of seat rows and passengers not wearing their seal belts. Massive force inside travelling outside, not vacuum or sucking. The same is demonstrated with the Aloha Airlines Boeing 737 over the Hawaiian Islands when through metal fatigue an entire section of the upper fuselage unzipped and departed from the aircraft. Incredibly this resulted in the loss of only one life, that of a wonderful, kind and well respected flight attendant. Due again to everyone wearing their seatbelts at the time. (If you have not seen pictures of these two events look theme up online they are be seen to be believed). Massive forces were experienced in both these events but the pressure equalised rapidly so the force of ejection settles just as quickly. In the event of the Southwest incident the breech was smaller so the pressure took a little longer to equalise. Unfortunately because the passenger was seated directly at the site of the failure the pressure was so intense initially it was sufficient to force her out through the opening in an extremely traumatic manner. An unimaginable and painful loss for her family and loved ones. I mean no disrespect to the memories of any of the people who lost their lives, or their loved ones affected by their loss, in the three examples I have raised. I hope this helps you to understand that in a Decompression/Depressurisation Event there is never anything or anyone 'sucked out' rather items or individuals are ejected out under the high force of pressure escaping from area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. You might also be able to describe it to others when this or similar incidents are being discussed. :)
@iiun4givenii8315 жыл бұрын
NthSyd747 Thank you for explaining everything in a manner where everyone can understand it. I always wondered what exactly goes on when a cabin depressurizes and if it actually causes objects and or people to be ‘sucked out’ so thanks for clearing that up for me. Also after such a event would crew members and or passengers be capable of walking around inside the cabin? After everything stabilized would there be a considerable amount of wind? And would the area that caused the depressurization be dangerous to be around? Let’s just say for example that the air craft is not descending in a dangerous manner and is at a altitude under 6,500 so lack of oxygen shouldn’t be a issue.
@iiun4givenii8315 жыл бұрын
If I’m correct anything over 6,500 ft is hypoxic and anything over 26,246 ft is when you require compressed air are oxygen? So when would oxygen masks be allowed to be taken off? I’m guessing once under the hypoxic zone but I am no expert. Well obviously if I was I wouldn’t be asking these questions.

being partially sucked out the window is in fact quite survivable (see flight 5390), even falling from 33,000 ft out of a plane is survivable (see Vesna Vulovic)... that's not what killed this passenger, it was the debris from the engine that hit her. probably a piece of the propeller that was flying about as fast as a bullet. So the "how can someone get sucked out through a small window" discussion is really stupid, it's only going to happen for the first few seconds of when the hole opens up, after that, the pressure equalizes so you can walk around in the plane without worrying about being sucked out. yeah it's super loud and foggy, and cold, and 300 mph winds blowing through hole, but no more danger of being sucked out .

It was awkward cause this is a secular program. I am mostly non-religious, I am not totally an atheist, cause no-one knows for sure. I have big problems with parts of the Bible, like most of the O.T., and I totally believe in evolution, but the 4 Gospels, which they themselves say are hugely incomplete, was written by people who presumably were there when Jesus was here, and when the situation is desperate, a higher existence might be just what one needs.........it certainly can't hurt.
