What would really be helpful if somebody put out a "bait chart" of what to look for and when. From other fisherman I've heard that fluke followed the squid into the bays during the early months. Well did we have that or not? I'm guessing no since that isn't what they were spitting up when I caught them. I've seen them spit up shrimp yet why don't the bait shops sell it as bait? The sand eel "hatch" or spawn or whatever dance they are doing just happened in the sound and clearly video's were showing a very good bite during that time. We just had a really good first half of striper fishing in the bays due to a strong bay minnow presence (I'm guessing that is what they were). The rip at Orient was quite busy for stripers this year. Porgy's do their spawn and they disperse to where I'm guessing the clam beds/oyster beds are. The bigger Sea bass seem to prefer the Sound over the bays since all I catch are midgets. I'm just starting to see a crab hatch in some areas so I'm guessing that will be the new bait of choice (I'm assuming these are fiddlers). While at Plum guy there were a lot of 3-4 inch fish jumping out of the water. Again not sure what they were. Haven't seen bunker yet. Sorry for the long post

great questions man - i wonder a lot of the same things. Its not easy to track the bait in so many different areas but I agree its the key to so much of where the predator fish will be. this is such a great topic though would love to hear what other people think as I'm trying to figure it out as well. the northeast is a very dynamic fishery with a lot of different migrations all happening at the same time throughout our season, I love it!

Peter an amazing video. It looks like you had the entire sound to yourself with not a ripple of water and not a single boat. I fish up and down the sound and I can’t get a day like yours to save my life. Greetings from Gio Western Long Island Sound.

Thanks Gio, lol thankfully the area I was fishing is far from any inlet so I knew boat traffic would be minimal. That fog can be a bit intimidating but theres something eerily peaceful about it too. Hope your finding the fish man, see you later

Nice day Peter. I was never a fan of the "reverse drive." I have the forward only. My first was the short black fins. I liked them better than the turbo fins. Hope you can get yours tuned up. I tapped the thumbs up 👍 button to feed the algorithm monsters.
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
you are the best algorith feeder Francus thank you! I did figure out what was wrong with the MD180. It ended up being that that back idler cable was too tight and pulled the sprocket out of alignment so I took out the back part of the sprocket with the bearings and re-greased and repositioned and loosened the cable a little. Seemed good now but we'll see. But yeah we gotta be careful to not tighten that back idler cable too much as it puts a lot of force on the sprocket when pedaling. live and learn

I was out that same morning. Water like glass, it was beautiful. Found myself in a cinderworm hatch in our area and that basically derailed my sea bass plans for that morning since current started moving quickly by the time I got to deep water. Outside of that, most of my success came on 5in gulp also, particularly salmon red. Sea bass has been tough so far, but seeing water temps hold in the low 70s should hopefully improve it in deeper waters soon 🤞
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
thank you for sharing the report man, I really hope the sea bassing improves. Thats pretty cool about the cinder worms, did you find stripers in the mix there?
@steverazzano3 ай бұрын
@@PeterRanieriII oh yes, that was why my morning plans were derailed. They were so thick that they were running into the bottom of my kayak. Going to bring my fly rod out with me next time so I can catch them a bit more effectively if the worms are around again.

2nd comment... I use spinner baits to catch flounder in Florida. But....I'm fishing mud flats. Anyway... I use an Eagle Claw 90° L shaped arm. Not because they're the best. But because they have the smallest blades which let's them sink quickly and they sell them without the jig. Only the arm and the blade. So you can put any weight jig you like. I think your fluke might like a little spinner. They're only a buck a piece. BTW.... Did you know where the term "buck" came from??? .... Deer/BUCK skins were used for currency before George Washington was put on green parchment.
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
thats a very interesting method to get flounder. I did use a spinnerbait once on an underwater video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poSWhn6obKiWms0 skip to 17:50 to see fluke semi interested. didnt know that about a buck, thats awesome

Another Great Video! I really appreciate the underwater camera work! You've inspired me to get back fishing on the Sound - now with a sit-on-top kayak (years ago I fished from a small motorboat). Question: do you think fishing is better on a pre/early weekend compared to late/post weekend given fishing pressure - even if modest?
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
Awesome ricky thats inspiring to hear your getting into a kayak on the sound! I love the sound, especially the places with less boat traffic. I personally haven't really noticed if the beginning of the weekend vs the end of the weekend fishes differently due to fishing pressure. I actively try to fish places that don't see a lot boat pressure. If your going stripers or weakfish I think you need to focus on places that don't see a lot of boat traffic though and early morning is best. For the bottom fishing like seabass, fluke, porgy I don't think the boat noise or traffic matters that much but obvious places can get fished out, thats for sure
@fishydubsfishing65163 ай бұрын
I bet some fresh strips of nice freshly caught porgy would get them Seabass fired up
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
love the way you think! now wishing I wouldve kept one in the beginning and tested that out, thank you for the thought!
@robertstorms55393 ай бұрын
@@PeterRanieriII I would think that fluke would be more interested since other video's have show that instead of squid Fluke are eating small porgy's.
@kasey73033 ай бұрын
Fantastic video. Why do you use the stringer? Do you ever worry that a huge predator fish will be attracted to it, when you have fish on it?
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
@@kasey7303 thank you Kasey, I only would use a stringer in places I know sharks and seals don’t frequent. The western Long Island sound hardly ever gets those and it just makes bleeding out the fish much easier. But they will only be on the stringer for about 5min then they go in the cooler

27:20 Did you eventually untangle it? I ran into similar not-so-good situation twice. In both cases I had to row my boat back to shore(long distance for rowing) and untangled it at home. I still can't be comfortable at fishing while motor is spinning.
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
lol I did eventually get it untangled but it took some time, yes its very frustrating. What I did last time was take the propeller off which isnt so difficult but then i lost the wingnut in the process 🤦♂️so this time i just manually did it like that for a solid 5min. yeah idk the solution but I think I just gotta be more aware and yeah dont have a line in the water while its going is a good rule. braid would be much worse!
@xykkkk3 ай бұрын
@@PeterRanieriII LOL, Good to know it's untangled. Can't agree more about braid part. It's better to have a wingnut than mine requiring 19 mm deep socket to unscrew. 😅

Hey Philip that is indeed the chesty: amzn.to/3A0GTjU The trick is actually my pfd. I have the camera sitting on top of the pfd where the zipper is. That is what allows it to kind of be high up near my neck.

Great video Pete! Did the Gulp work better than using Pro-Cure?
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
Thanks Dan, the gulp def outfished the pro-cure. I would still get a few taps and bites on the soft plastics with procure but everytime I dropped gulp they would swallow it, I really didnt even move it many times, just drifting a small piece on the hook would get bites immediately.

Why do you keep messing with your drag. I have always learned that it should be set when you start fishing and it is finished.
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
@@milstuff4530 I guess there are different schools of thought with it. You can certainly be right that it doesn’t need to be adjusted if you set it right when you start but my opinion is that it should be adjusted throughout the fight. Once I feel the first head shake of the fish I gage how big it might be and lighten up usually in case it takes a hard run. I’m only using 8lb test too so maybe that has something to do with this habit I’ve formed
