Once a fire gets a foothold in a basement of a house, the structure is usually done for, as the fire can travel up through the walls, not to mention weaken the entire integrity of the first floor, resulting in everything collapsing into the already involved basement... My uncle was a fireman and pointed out just how nasty fires that originate in the basement can get! There's nothing with this house that can be saved other than the foundation after everything's ripped out...

Thirty seconds in and another development site. To be fair it's hardly this fire departments fault so ignore the arm chair experts. The house was lost before arrival. If you insist on keep buildings homes out of timber you just cannot expect anything else. Add to that volunteer rural fire dept with extended attendance times and back up even further away you have the recipe for the perfect house fire.

"To be fair it's hardly this fire departments fault so ignore the arm chair experts. The house was lost before arrival" Mediocrity Rules! Could it have been that they had no clue what firefighting is? "If you insist on keep buildings homes out of timber you just cannot expect anything else." A useless excuse for incompetence. Is that the one you always fall back on?

I wonder about two things. If the resources had been available at the outset, could this house have been saved? I am a great believer in closing interior doors at night and when everyone leaves the house. Could that have slowed down this fire enough to make a difference?
@zyglo9826
@zyglo9826 4 жыл бұрын
enid0mom...I was wondering the same thing. It would be interesting to know a few pertinent facts like: What was the response time? How long was the pre-burn time before the alarm was received? What did the initial assignment consist of? How long before mutual aid companies arrived?

Since the fire went up from the basement to the attic through the interior of the walls, closing the bedroom doors probably would not have affected the progress. It would help the residents keep smoke out of the rooms from a kitchen fire and slow the progress from the basement stairs.

It's amazing how fast a house fire spreads and climbs up to the roof....Gotta figure I'm a goner if stuck on the third floor of my tinder box house...
@aaronmichael7116

Kramden...usually, that indicates the house was built using balloon construction. We had a fire like that a few summers back. It started in the crawlspace, 3 feet high might I add, when the workers were doing some maintenance on the sub pump. They left for lunch, and about 10 minutes later, the home owner smelled smoke. He was spraying water from a garden hose into the side door when our Chief 2 arrived. Chief 2 reported heavy smoke from the driveway side door, homeowner spraying garden hose unto the side door, have E-3 be prepared to stretch on a working fire"...back to balloon construction, so we hit the orange glow in the corner at the C/D corner, and waited for more flame. No flame, but a frantic message, get out now, it's thru the roof...a mess everywhere, because I forgot to tell, we forgot to hand in our accountability tags
@fleetwin1
@fleetwin1 4 жыл бұрын
@@aaronmichael7116 I'm not sure I understand your final sentence...Please know I was not finding fault or criticizing the firefighters in any way.... I was just acknowledging that my triple decker is a tinder box, and most likely has that "balloon construction" you refer to....I have fire extinguishers all over, but they will be little help for a fire that travels up inside the walls. I have a semi-fire escape on our third floor bedroom, but need to investigate some sort of tossable escape ladder....

@@fleetwin1 hi Kramden....I'm so sorry if I came off as pissed, but I reread my last sentence, twice in fact, because it certainly is hard to understand. I was talking about these "accountability tags" we have, they have our name on them, and when we get to a scene, we are suppose to hand them in to the accountability officer, that way there they can keep track of who's where and when. I'm glad to read you have an escape plan, just be careful with that "balloon construction". Peace.

I pity the fire departments protecting the areas in which many of the critics here live. If those critics' homes burn and the departments do their best to contain the fire, those critics will probably sue the departments and the personnel who "fail" to stop the fire damage, to say nothing of the water damage. Those critics do love to show their ignorance.
@zyglo9826

Clifton Dean...very true. If you choose to live in a rural area with no hydrants and a volunteer fire department with a 20+ minute response time, you need to accept the fact that if you have a fire and you can’t put it out with an extinguisher, you’re probably going to have a total or near total loss. Instead of spending thousands of $$$ on all new appliances and furniture, a better investment would be a motor-driven pump connected to the well and about 100’ of hose. You just might have a chance of saving your house.

Say what you want. I know this house. My mother and father built this house starting in the 40's and finished in the 50's. Firefighters of a small town like this are mostly volunteers. Plus this was the far south end of fire district, about 12 miles from the main [manned] station. Rural, no water service. Considering all the fire department did a good job and are to be congratulated.

With all due respect this fire was worthy of an aggressive attack. If and only if there are no options for water other than Tankers then it’s a tough one. Not sure where the nearest mutual company is coming from but they should be on initial alarm of fire. Manpower also seemed light so very tough.

Remember, no hydrants, they are only relying on the small amount of water available from the first truck arriving and than hopefully more as the fire tankers arrive. Who knows how far they need to travel. That fire had such a head start before they arrived, even if hydrants were available, it would still be a challenge. Plus, if that home had "Balloon Construction, which I believe it did, the long studs were perfect unobstructed, passages for fire to spread to the attic and throughout the entire house. You need to look at the total picture before making a negative comment about the fire dept.

0:10 STOP right there. What is wrong with this picture? I bet not ONE of you can figure it out. If you Know me and you should by now, the answer should be on the tip of your tongue. 0:30 STOP right there! Did they do ma 360? If this is a basement fire, what are they doing wrong? 0:40 Anyone see something STUPID here? 2:10 I thought all firefighters where ready to go to work right off the apparatus! That's what all you LOOSERS tell me when I say that PROTECTION by applying water through the windows is faster and safer to eliminate the threat than initial Heroic Search and Rescue where you go into a 1400 degree structure to remove a victim in their night cloths and bring them through the fire you ALLOWED to burn and get bigger. Do you realizes that you don't have to be fully dressed to apply water to Visible Burning Material through the windows? They don't! 3:34 This is how you fight fires within 40 seconds of arrival. Of course, you have to be intelligent enough to know how to Surgically apply water to stop the threat before you could possibly run out. That tiny, TINY house and they couldn't stop the fire. That's because they didn't find the main source of fire and get Tank Water on it within One Minute of arrival. Then they didn't systematically follow it through to a effective conclusion. Go in the front door when the basement is burning? What the hell do you think you could accomplish doing that? Any fire you put out will be subject to the Blast furnace below your feet. These are the people you guys worship JUST for Joining Up, Dressing Up and Showing UP.

Why a lawyer? When you live in a rural setting you take into account that 1. It is a volunteer fire department with jobs and families. So it might take a little longer to assemble a crew. 2. You will not have a good water source and expect if your house catches fire then you have a good chance of it being a total loss. I carry extra insurance knowing fully that I have ZERO water supply around me and a volunteer dept. As good as they are two of my neighbors houses were total losses because of living rural. It happens.

@@ffjsb and even if they did, good luck winning a lawsuit against a government body at ANY level when challenging them in their official capacity... the legal doctrine of qualified immunity protects them... the courts position is (in this case), "better that the fire dept made a mistake while trying to extinguish the fire rather than standing by and doing NOTHING at all"... so in a case like this beating qualified immunity is a really HIGH legal hurdle to surmount

Right...they had 1 or 2 guys there when they got there. This isn’t NYC or Boston that has dozens of FFs and hydrants as soon as they get on scene. You could also see black smoke coming from the basement which means most likely there was heavy fire in the basement which means a probability of holes in the first floor. We have a saying in the fire service which goes risk a lot to save a lot and risk little to save little, there was little left to be saved here by the time they established a water supply.
