Bad Religion is one of the most deep, thought provoking, lyrical bands of all time period. They have two main songwriters Greg Graffin and Bret Gurewitz who are both virtuoso lyricists. I think you could really find breaking down their lyrics fun. Try songs like "Sorrow", "Generator", "Tiny Voices", "Stranger than Fiction", "Struck a Nerve" so many great songs.

"American exceptionalism." From Wikipedia: American exceptionalism is a critique of the United States of America that the country sees its history as inherently different from that of other nations,[2] stemming from its emergence from the American Revolution, becoming what the political scientist Seymour Martin Lipset called "the first new nation"[3] and developing a uniquely American ideology, "Americanism", based on liberty, equality before the law, individual responsibility, republicanism, representative democracy, and laissez-faire economics. This ideology itself is often referred to as "American exceptionalism."

Bad Religion, technically speaking, are among the first acts that played melodic hardcore punk rock... They specifically speak about America, because here in western Europe the so-called church-state separation is a reality, contrary to U.S., where religious freedom is a way for churches to have an influence over the state. In my country, Italy, we have a similar situation, but only with one church, Roman Catholic Apostolic one.

Punk songs are generally quite short and fast: the Dead Kennedys' "N@zi Punks F*ck Off" is just over 1 minute. Bad Religion are amazing. You should check out "Sorrow", "Don't Pray on Me", "Infected", "21st Century Digital Boy", "Skyscraper", "All Good Soldiers", and "Recipe for Hate". Okay, just all of it. Also, if you want to get into punk, I recommend NOFX, Descendents (check out the song "'Merican", in particular), Social Distortion ("Ball and Chain" and "Story of My Life" are their huge ones), and Rancid, and if you branch out into ska at all, you should hit up Operation Ivy, Less Than Jake, Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish, and Streetlight Manifesto. Happy listening!

God Song You can't always look at the lyrics as Greg speaking from his own point of view. On a lot of Bad Religion verses he is speaking from the point of an average person or American living in society. They are definitely one of the most complex punk bands from a lyrical standpoint. A lot of people quickly dismiss them because of their name or underwhelming, sometimes flat, vocals. But their content and composition is masterful on most every one of their songs.

Every Bad Religion song has a catchy melody..So it really doesn´t matter what other song you are going listen to..so just choose randomly...but the first Bad Religion song which I heard back in 1989 and which made me interested to this band was "Sanity" from their iconic album "No Control" which was their 4th album but so to say their "Break through Album" where they then became a wider audience. The song which I then heard the most of that album was "Change of ideas" but that track is just 55 seconds long..unfortunately... "Well the sheaves have all been brought, but the fields have washed away, And the palaces now stand where the coffins all were laid, And the times we see ahead, we must glaze with rozy hues, For what don't wish to admit what it is we have to lose. Millenia in coming, the modern age is here. It sanctifies the future, yet renders us with fear. So many theories, so many prophecies, What we do need is a change of ideas. When we are scared we can hide in our reveries but What we need is a change of ideas. Change of ideas, change of ideas, What we need now is a change of ideas." (I didn´t heard that song for over a decade but now noticed that I know still the lyrics..I´m impressed by myself.;-D) ....it is the "opener" for that album..but generally all the tracks on that album are not very long anyway and "Sanity" with its 2min 45sec. (I now just searched for that record in my record collection and looked that up now) is by far the longest followed by "I want to conquer the world" with 2 min 18sec...the rest of those all in all 15 tracks including the album titel track "No control" are all under 2 minutes...

To statements form band members: Greg: "Our song 'American Jesus' is about the supposition that Jesus treats America differently than other countries. During the Gulf War, George Bush said, 'We'll win, because God is on our side!'. What an amazing statement!" Brett: "American Jesus is pretty self-explanatory. It's about the idiocy of people thinking that they've got God on their side in a war, or God on their side in any kind of dispute altogether. Or the stupidity of, actually, nationalism. The stupidity of thinking that any spiritual concept could even include the idea of nationalism."

Excellent choice of song, I'm here a little late so I'll just drop my 2 cents and split. I think this song targets American Exceptionalism, Evangelical faith in general, and this odd little thing called Prosperity Gospel ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosperity_theology ). I think it also raises the spectre of religious influence on American politics (you know, that church/state separation that the Founding Fathers talked about), which is almost prophetic when you think of how much time has passed since the song was written. I really loved the point / counterpoint at the end... the parenthesised lyrics are wickedly effective, and a little scary, if people actually do think that way.

In my paper book dictionary 1993 the definition of nationalism is synonymous with patriotism. But online it’s about superiority and dominance over other countries. Changing the definition of words is Orwellian. Song was Ok. Catchy pop. Lyrics i don’t know. Seems like they believe the propaganda on tv and blame the people for it.

The meaning indeed changed... without starting a big debate, left leaning institution are changing A LOT of definition and words meaning. And the stuff online is RARELY written by right leaning people so... make your conclusion (you'll never find anything good referring to being proud of a nation these days...) // Bad Religion are excellent, many of their songs are very catchy and NORMALLY have ''political''/''societal'' message. Before being a BIG amateur of Symphonic Metal... I was a Punk ;) (in the 90s... I'm 43 now). In these days... the Mainstream stuff was VERY right leaning... so Punk were always more left leaning (denounce inequality, injustice, the ''ugly'' side of society... rarely anything positive, and... can't be a punk IF you are on the same side as the system so...), anyway :) 21st Century Boy is very nice, Against the Grain, and many more :) Thanks for this reaction... been a while since I listened to them :)

theres no reason to be loyal to a country unless you think its superior. It's blind loyalty to a myth constructed around lines drawn in the sand, and in the case of america constructed after a brutal colonial genocide of native peoples and a nation built on slavery. Patriotism is a feeling rooted in the ideology of nationalism, the two are inseparable. Theres a reason why the cohort of people who proclaim themselves patriots in the usa, and in my own country in eastern europe are fascists or close by ideologies Nationalism also didnt acquire a new meaning, its had the same meaning for a very long time, im sure you are familiar of the n@zi party, which referenced nationalism in it's party name. As long as nationalism is anything but anti-colonial nationalism/nationalism of enslaved peoples, it is a right wing ideology. one should be loyal to good ethics, not nation-states

This song is about Donald John Trump. Certainly. Sorry, Daniel. I had to say so out loud. Please don’t bar me from your channel for being honest. Even if it does predate hid presidency, America has been the Holy Land of materialism and now blatantly white nationalism since before my birth (1957). Look up McCarthyism, with it’s hate and paranoia. I don’t have time and you don’t have space for me to write the book it would need for me to completely support that statement. Most of my sources are those who proudly wear the Trump label “fake news”. This comment is as near as I can come to offending you without knowing if you’re a Trumpist Christian.
