By now you know that Paul recorded this in his farmhouse in Scotland (except for Maybe I’m Amazed) and played every instrument himself. Here’s a not so fun fact… the editor of Rolling Stone, a Lennon fan boy, had the writer who originally gave this album a rave review - change it to a negative review before it was issued. Jann Wenner was trash. He lead an anti-McCartney crusade for awhile. It became trendy to bash Paul because people wrongly accused him of breaking up The Beatles - when it fact it was John - while Paul fell into a deep depression. The whole thing is heartbreaking and pisses me off (and I wasn’t even born yet.)

This is still my favorite album of all the albums McCartney did without the Beatles. There is such a simple, beautiful rawness to it. I believe that this album was released before there was any announcement that the Beatles had broken up. Some say the album contributed to the break up. As usual, your analysis and commentary goes places I hadn’t thought of. I appreciate you.

Side 1 is mostly acoustic songs and feels like a "roots" album of sorts. I can picture Paul recording this on his farm in Scotland with his wife, kids, and sheepdog Martha all listening in. I can hear a sense of alienation/separation and freedom in these first 7 songs. This feels like a deeply personal album for Paul. Lots of introspective lyrics and feel to the music. 🎵🎵🎵

Robert - John had announced to the other Beatles that he was quitting the group on September 20th, 1969. Paul was crushed that the group was over - and he retreated to his farm house in Scotland and fell into a deep depression. It was his wife, Linda, who helped get him out of his funk by telling him to go back to what he loves the most - making music. So he started recording at his home in December of 1969 and that what would become this album.

'Front porch' was such an apposite comment because I think, after The Beatles, he wanted a home made diy feel to the album. I don't think it won him much praise at the time and that's why Ram followed. I can't stop playing the thing. Every Night is my fav on the first side: the beautiful wordless chorus is pretty much You Never Give Me Your Money but it feels like a totally different song. Junk is painfully tender. Your ear seems to pick up something different at every step and this is very much a musician's take on a favourite album of mine. Love the Jaguar shirt.

I was a senior in high school when this album came out. I listened to it over and over. And I still love it... especially knowing it's 100% Paul (with some lovely backing vocals by Linda). Surprisingly, it was not particularly well received upon release. Sure, it wasn't the Beatles, but it was still the first solo album by (arguably) the most talented of the four. And it did not disappoint me in the slightest. Personally, I believe this album is an understated glimpse into the true essence of what makes Sir Paul a musical genius.

Crystal!!! I’m so happy to see this today. We’re feeling the effects of Hurricane Idalia and to be greeted with this made a gloomy day much brighter. Perhaps not coincidentally, the sun started shining shortly after this video dropped. ☺️ What a debut for Paul McCartney. Very similar to John Lennon’s debut album. Stripped back, raw, minimalist rock and pop. Paul recorded this incognito at Abbey Road under a pseudonym Billy Martin. The big hit from this album is “Maybe I’m Amazed”. All of the other Beatles praised it.

Oh, Crystal. That was just magnificent! ❤ I'm so tickled that you tackled "McCartney" at this juncture. Are you aware that Paul played all of the instruments? The only participation from another were the brief vocal harmonies from wife Linda. This album was released a couple weeks before the final Beatles album, "Let it Be." In the solo album, Paul included a q&a with himself. And in it, he asked himself if the Beatles would ever play together again, and he said no, they had broken up. That news went global the day after the album's release, sending shockwaves through the musical world. I remember precisely how devastating that announcement felt to me and countless others. 😭 Do you have the lyrics for that beautiful original tune you shared at the end? I found it incredibly touching. 🥰 It's such a treat to listen to your current analysis of this legendary music, Crystal. You love it every bit as much as I do. 👏😁 Big hugs and heartfelt thanks to you, sweet Crystal. 🤗❤️

Deb - Paul's first solo album ("McCartney") was released on April 17th, 1970. The "Let It Be" album was released 3 weeks later - on March 8th, 1970. Paul's solo LP was #1 on the U.S. Billboard album chart for 3 weeks... until "Let It Be" went to the #1 spot. For the next 4 weeks "Let It Be" was #1 and "McCartney" was #2. If they had waited to release "Let It Be" for a few more weeks - Paul's first solo album would have topped the U.S. chart for 7 consecutive weeks. It was a huge success in terms of sales and chart performance.

You are correct - that the LP was poorly received by the critics... but the album was a huge commercial and chart success. It was #1 for 3 weeks on the U.S. chart - and was kept from being #1 for 7 consecutive weeks - only because the "Let It Be" album was released just 3 weeks after Paul's album - and it went to #1 putting Paul's album at #2 for the next 4 weeks. While the critic's reviews were biasedly negative... the fans went out and bought the album in droves and loved it.

@@moviemaestro800 wrote this: "The Beatles were the biggest thing to ever happen in pop music, at the time, so an album from just one of them was still going to do quite well". Ringo released his first solo album about a month before Paul's and it peaked at #22 in the US. Ringo released his second solo album in late September of 1970 and it peaked at #65 in the US. John released his "Two Virgins" album on November 29th of 1968 and it peaked at #124 in the US. John's "Life with the Lions" album was released on May 9th of 1969 and it peaked at #174 in the US. John's "Wedding Album" was released on November 7th of 1969 and it peaked at #178 in the US. John's "Plastic Ono Band" album was released on December 11th, 1970 and it peaked at #6 in the US. That's SIX different solo albums released by John (3), George (2) and Ringo (1)... before Paul's solo album was released - and NONE of them did "quite well". They all did very poorly. And, yes, The Beatles were enormously popular when ALL of those 6 albums were released... but none of them did anything at all close to what McCartney's album did. Ringo had a second solo album come out 5 months after Paul's... and it was a commercial and chart failure. John's "Plastic Ono Band" album came out 8 months after Paul's - and it also was a commercial and chart loser in comparison to Paul's (selling about one fifth as many units and barley making it into the top 10 for a week. It wasn't until George's triple album "All Things Must Pass" came out at the end of 1970... that another solo Beatle album did well commercially and on the charts.

This album was trashed for being trite and insubstantial, just Paul dicking around on his farm with his family (though it was actually recorded in London). I feel that this album is just as personal and revealing of Paul's mental state post-Beatles as Plastic Ono Band is for John. John's album is about anger, pain and disillusionment. Paul's album is about overcoming depression one day at a time. Every Night talks about how he can't get out of bed, but the music is so supportive, it feels like he can't get out of bed, not because he's depressed, but because the bed is so comfortable. Junk is one of Paul's most underrated lyrics and one of his most profound. Dismissed as a shopping list of rhyming pairs, it is both simple and multi-layered. It is a song about disposability. On one layer, you can read it as a gentle polemic against consumerism and wastefulness. But in its essence, it's bemoaning the loss of value and it also applies to people too. How can something/someone mean so much one moment and be thrown away as trash the next? Glasses is very creepy and ends with a lift from Suicide (a song about domestic abuse and how it erodes your spirit resulting in a form of suicide). Maybe I'm Amazed is uplifting but he's not out of the woods yet. It includes the line: Maybe I'm afraid of the way I leave you. He's talking about death here, either by suicide or accident. It scares him and he doesn't want to leave his family in the lurch. Anyway that is McCartney.
