One reason I love Neil is his harmonica playing; my daddy died when I was only 4 ( I'm 58 now), and I have very few memories of him. He was only 35 when he died in a car accident. But one thing I do remember is he played the harmonica and I have memories of sitting on the front porch step beside him while he played the harmonica for me. He called me his 'Sugar Booger', ha. So Neil always makes me connect in my heart to Daddy.

Many musicians are afraid to play their new stuff in concert because people don't know it. People like to hear familiar music and are not as welcoming to new music. Brave musicians do it anyway. It takes a lot of courage to go on a stage, by yourself, play two instruments, sing, and bare your thoughts, your music, and feelings to thousands of people. And do it for over 50 years. Neil is masterful at it.

Daniel, Neil Young has many different styles to his music. On songs like Old Man, Heart of Gold and Love is a Rose his music sounds like Dylan but his voice, not as much. Neil went through phases where he played country, folk, grunge, a sort of heavy metal, '50s style rock-a-billy, new wave, computerized/industrial, blues and maybe soul (he was in a band with Rick James). Eventually you should do Ohio, Tonight's the Night, Needle and the Damage Done and Long May You Run. It's also about time you also checked out Linda Ronstadt, maybe You're No Good or When Will I be Loved. She also did a few Warren Zevon songs that are really good.

Daniel, can't begin to explain to you how much your listening, exploring the meaning and lyrics to our music means to me. I have been on a quest to pass it on. So many of these artists created the lyrics, the music, played all the instruments, recorded the songs, self promoted and then took it all on the road for us to enjoy. It is a magical era never to be duplicated and I want to thank you for keeping it alive!

1972. 8th grade. Older brother left for Navy boot camp. I took the family stereo system from his bedroom and put it in mine, with the speakers on each side of my bed and pointed inward toward me. I grabbed a random album from his collection that turned out to be a live recording called Four Way Street, by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. I wasn't paying attention, and ended up playing side #3. The third song that I heard was Neil Young doing Cowgirl in the Sand. I seriously recommend finding that specific recording of that song, and listen to it.

I've always loved singing, and was blessed with friends when I was young who played an instrument. Piano, guitar, and in an oddity, I was in a barbershop quarter, where no instruments were required except our voices. But by 16, I did a defensive move, because you can't always find someone who can play, bought a guitar and taught myself how to play "cowboy chords". And learned how to sing and play at the same time, even! It has worked for me, and I encourage anyone who has the urge, give in! Other than sore fingers for about a week, you will get better than you think you will, quicker than you thought you would. And a decent starter guitar runs about $100, so it's not even that expensive. Until you get into electric and demanding a tube amp, but that is another story, and not needed to begin.

One of the best sounding summers memory with a strange mishap locked beside the music. Neil Young was on the radio when we took refuge in Dad's new Torino. We were trying to avoid several families of displaced and pissed off bees that an orchard's chauffeur accidentally dropped on the road right alongside our campsite. Many campers chose the suggested avoidance method called running away until your run runs out of run. A rare communal swim broke out and then the screaming just stopped and we were alone listening to Heart of Gold. Terry Jacks with Concrete Sea was next and America, A Hive With No Frame. My Dad added a Doris Day tune from memory...whatever will bee... Antihistamines for all.

ds9 Neil released the studio version in 1970 I think, and I remember it received tons of radio play. So he would have been about 25. Not old at all but maybe he felt that way. Yeah I like Neil Young, he of sad, pained voice and acoustic guitar: a terrific combination. for good folk music. Thanks for these reactions, I've really been enjoying them. I'm 43 and I've been listening to Neil Young (and other singer-songwriters from the 60s and 70s) since I was in grade school. At lot of my peers considered it old music even then. They would give me a hard time for my musical tastes as they were listening to goofballs like Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli. That fact still makes me smile! Meanwhile I was learning all about Billy Joel and Harry Chapin and Cat Stevens and tons more. It's awesome to see younger people appreciating these great tunes. By the way there are tons more great Neil Young tracks. Just off the top of my head may I suggest Everybody Know This Is Nowhere and Cortez The Killer. Rock On!

Daniel, YOU are just AWSOME!!!! You are such a joy to listen to! Damn, you are smart as all get-out, and so sensitive! Neil is another of my favorite artists! He is at least top 20, if not top 10. He has such a huge catalog!!!!! "Harvest" is a fantastic album, and just one out of so many!!! I can't wait to see you react to more by him! I love how you research! I do the same thing, looking up words I don't know, or going off on related tangents! Dylan is notorious for blocking. And I don't think "Heart of Gold" sounds anything like Dylan. They are sorta in the same genre, but each is totally unique to himself! I'm a much bigger fan of Neil than I have been of Dylan, although in the past few years, I have come to appreciate more of Dylan than just the "hits". I do, however, still have a vivid memory of being 12 years old, and being totally captivated by hearing "Like A Rolling Stone" for the first time on the radio! It was his first famous "electric" song. I was crazy about it! And that was over a year after I became hopelessly in love with The Beatles!!!! Anyway......... Looking forward to more Neil, and whatever you come up with next! ;)

I was about to comment on how inquisitive Daniel is. That's exactly how I was. Those same tiny drumming patterns or violin like guitar in the background that he hears, that's how my mind was at such a young age. I kept it going and eventually owned 600 albums and play guitar too. Even if I didn't play guitar at all, I would still be a huge rock fanatic. Nuff about me, this kid is great, I'm telling ya, he's gonna go far.

Neil had polio as a child and his left side doesn’t work so well. Unbelievable that he can still sing and play two instrument’s.
