I live an hour and a half away from Muswellbrook here in New South Wales and when this song came out in '75 open cut coal mining was taking off as a US owned company Costain coal established themselves as the major producer of coal in the Hunter Valley [Muswellbrook is the centre of the Hunter]. Many speculators and investors poured millions of dollars into the area and the Muswellbrook area became the hub of open cut coalmining. By the mid 1980's, Costains sold out to other coal companies including US owned Peabody coal out of Pittsburgh. Ironically and perhaps coincidentally Steely Dan may have been more prophetic than they intended. signed: kangaroos off the starboard bow

Okay, so let's dive in to the nitty gritty of Black Friday by the Dan: Black Friday was indeed by in the 19th century, but Fagen is referencing a future event similar to that one, and similar to Black Tuesday in 1929. In 1929, many people lost everything and indeed jumped out of high rise buildings on Wall Street, so that's where we get "catch the grey men (men in grey suits) as they dive from the 14th floor." Interestingly enough, the "14th floor" in most high rises is actually the 13th floor, since they skip the numbering over their being a 13th floor (thank you superstition), so here's just a further reference to the bad luck investors will have when the market crashes. Fagen, IMO, is telling the story of a guy who is preparing for the next cataclysmic stock market crash, of course... and the guy that's going to make a fortune from it and run off to Muswellbrook, Australia, and hang with the kangaroos. It's interesting to note the original Ponzi scheme was in 1920, and it lead to a lot of copycats and lots of unsecured investments and that's one of the things that lead to Black Tuesday in 1929, and Fagen refers to erasing the "red words" in his "little black book", a clever way of saying he's going to erase any records of his ponzi scheme, and that's why there's all the references to running away from the states, changing his name, going into a hole where nobody will find him, etc... as criminals of that financial sort are pretty fervently hunted. About the only line I can't seem to find any real solid idea on is the "Archbishop's gonna sanctify me." I've seen some guesses as to it meaning the character will make a large donation to the church in exchange for the church offering immunity and giving him a pardon which sort of makes sense. Others still claim the song is about the rapture, but for the life of me, I don't see it. In any case, as usual, Fagen writes some brilliant lyrics. You still need to do Bad Sneakers, Home at Last, I.G.Y, and a few others. Be well, and hope you and the family had a great TGiving Daniel.

Great tune, but then again, all Steely Dan songs are great tunes. I have always believed that this track is in part a tribute to Jim Morrison and The Doors. Check out Roadhouse Blues on 1970's Morrison Hotel. Similar tempo and dark attitude. Morrison sings "Let it roll, baby, roll..." while Fagen sings "And if he don't come across I'm gonna let it roll". Never confirmed the link, just my own perception/speculation.

Great tune. Black Friday, a proper financial history lesson for Daniel. As to singles which reach the charts, why not pay tribute this Christmas season to the artist with far and away the most songs to reach the top 40, Bing Crosby. Fading out allowed the radio stations to fade in the next song. The stations squeezed more songs into less time. The DJ would often read the commercials over the fade-outs, too. Very frustrating to listen to that kind of station. As I remember, they were mostly on AM radio. FM stations were quieter, and they let the songs finish before they began the next one. I would put my little radio on FM and softly sing myself to sleep. Good memories!

I've always thought black Friday referred to the October 1929 stock market crash. The song mentions men falling from the 14th floor. There has always been stories of investors jumping out of windows on that day. So I assumed that was what was being referred to here. The music style is rock and roll meets jazz swing. That's one thing Steely Dan did often as I'm sure you know.

I'm curious what the one Chuck Berry song you have heard is. He's got quite a few songs that are pretty essential to the development of rock & roll. Then of course, he goes and records a silly novelty song called "My Ding-a-Ling" and THAT song, of all songs, is his only Number 1 Billboard Hot 100 Single. The ones most worth checking out IMO are "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Too Much Monkey Business," "Rock and Roll Music," "Johnny B. Goode," "Around and Around," actually gee whiz I'm looking through his singles discography and man there's just too many great tunes to list. Do some Chuck Berry sometime, and I'll recommend more songs lol. But a good Christmas song to do by him is "Run Rudolph Run." Cheers Daniel!

Record companies release a song as a single specifically because they think it will chart and sell well. Obviously, they miss sometimes but in the majority of cases, if it is released as a single it will have at least modest chart success. A few bands consistently put songs in the upper reaches - artists like the Beatles and Michael Jackson were uniquely successful at charting singles high on the charts. Other bands had more success with albums than with singles such as Pink Floyd. Dark Side of the Moon was legendary for spending not weeks, but YEARS on the Billboard Hot 100 album chart.
