Ringo is an idiosyncratic drummer. He created a unique drum arrangement for each song. That’s actually rare, especially these days. And it was just perfect for that song. He was also left-handed playing a right-handed drum kit, so there is a cool natural slight lag in his attack, when he wants it. It sounds laid back when he wants, or he’ll be right on when the phrase demands it. His dedication to serving the song and not to showing off with flash is what makes him one of the best ever and a great model for young drummers to emulate. It’s also true of Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones, who was already a hot, successful jazz drummer when he took the RS gig - and never left. It was always just what served the song. But the sheer variety in their music puts Ringo in a league of his own.

People who say Ringo is a "terrible" drummer usually aren't drummers. Ringo was the perfect drummer for the Beatles. He always played to the song and could serve as another compositional element for the band. There are many Beatle songs that can be identified just by listening to the drum track alone. For decades pretty much any time that the various drummer magazines ("Modern Drummer", "Drumhead", etc.) would have a "best drummers of all time" poll, Ringo would usually finish in the top 20 (if not the top 10). Totally support that philosophy. Listening out of context is fine, but not as educational to new Beatles listeners. And people who rank the Beatles albums are just weak in historical context and have an insecure need to classify, categorize and put the Beatles in a handy box set of bad, mediocre, good and excellent to satisfier their incessant need to organize, classify e rather than just enjoy the music. Many of these numbskulls don't even have a music degree. Often it's out of context of the era the Beatles came from and worked,. all based on musical preference, that ironically evolved FROM the Beatles music and era, as did their music evolve from the previous eras. there is no need to classify the Beatles, they are in a class by themselves or no one would be listening to them today.

As someone mentioned above, if you want to do their "last" album you'll probably want to do Abbey Road because that was their last recorded LP - their actual "last" album is technically Let It Be, but the music was recorded before Abbey Road and during a difficult period for the band (although many of the songs are still excellent); also it was produced by Phil Spector instead of George Martin, and with very little input from the group, which gave it a different feel.

The thing I've learned about the early Beatles is that George Harrison was influenced by a jazz guitarist, Wes Montgomery who liked to play octaves, ie a high E and the next octave down together, plucking them. Ringo is a great drummer. He is in fact a very special one because first: he is lefthanded with a righthanded drumkit what makes his playing unusual - maybe that is the reason for some people to believe he would not play good; he just plays not according to common standards. And second: he is one of the very few drummers that write drumpatterns for each song so there is no song like the other in relation to the drum play. And last: he can keep the beat like few others.

In the ensuing years, you realize a WHOLE lot of things that they did that were great. Vocal arrangements, basslines, songwriting, song choice, the covers they did were better than the original, drum fills, melodies, rhythms - you name it, they were great at it. Can't wait until you get into their more innovative works later on, but it's nice to watch someone listening to these for the first time. At some point, you throw up your arms and think that a great percentage of their songs are miracles. For "just a little band from Liverpool" (which is what they refer to themselves), they were as in touch with the cosmos as anyone, Beethoven, Coltrane, whoever you want to put in there.

Yeah, that's what's tough to understand. They used some sounds from the time, like the doo-wop "ooohs" and "aaahhs," but they put their own stamp on it. In order to really understand their impact, I think you'd have to listen to nothing but 1962-3 top-40 for a month or so, then listen to this album. They had such a strong influence on everything after that much of what sounded revolutionary then sounds normal.
@dynjarren83553 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Gerry and the Pacemakers and the Dave Clark Five. Their supposed Rivals. And sure those groups had some hits and weren’t bad. But when you compare them side by side to the Beatles. Their music sounds simplistic and clunky. Whereas the Beatles sound modern and sophisticated even. Those other bands could not compete. They didn’t have the songs. Somehow the Beatles wrote brilliant songs and sang and harmonized better. It’s not even close. And they had an original sound and style. I Feel fine and Ticket to Ride are brilliant pop rock songs. The other groups had nothing even close. And the Beatles output was amazing. Album after Album. The others sputtered out after a couple of albums. They had no material. So the Beatles destroyed the competition and dominated their Era. Hands down! And fifty years later, their music is still popular. I don’t know anyone who cares about Gerry and the Pacemakers or The DC5. They have been forgotten. The Beatles are Forever!

But they weren’t competing with the Beatles. No one could. They carved out their own fan base and musical territory. Now that I think about it, British Rock in the Sixties was an embarrassment of Rich’s. The Who, the Stones, the beginning of Led Zep, the beginning of Pink Floyd Etc. That Era will never repeat. It was a golden time. But the Beatles were the leaders and led the way. Thanks for reminding me. 👏🏻🎃

Your one of the few who recognize Lennon's voice for what it was. He finds a very strong attitude or character for each song in his solo parts. In early Beatles it was Lennon's voice (and of course the writing) that carried them beyond just being a good pop group. McCartney and Harrison's voices would develop, but year one was the year of Lennon.
@tubularap3 жыл бұрын
Ringo was a great drummer, and fitted perfectly with The Beatles music. My guess for the reason of this down-talking of Ringo being "not a good drummer" is that Ringo never broke out those endless drumsolo's that other drummers of those days 'HAD' to do. As a drummer he never took the spotlights, and that became an exception. (Btw; Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones also stayed modest.) Drummers of the other famous bands all had to have their moment to shine. Overly affected 'artistic' drumsolo's that took the swing out of a good song, and were just showcases for the 'forgotten' band member in the back. At live concerts I always dreaded the moment that "the drumsolo" had to happen. I really liked that Ringo stayed a solid foundation and served the band very well.
@tubularap3 жыл бұрын
@phillydisco - True. The down-talking of Ringo's quality was not from the 1960s but came later. Indeed after the other drummers soloed their egos to great hights and that became the 'feature' to judge drummers on, in hindsight Ringo's modest attitude may have affected the judgement of those that complained. This all is my own guess.
@cuebj3 жыл бұрын
@phillydisco very good compare and contrast with Moon. Who probably my favourite band apart from, Sex Pistols and Public Image Limited. At 66, I'm still getting into Beatles more than I did when younger. Moon got Ringo's son, Zak, into drumming so he plays more Moon style. Who and Moon were primarily an angry young man's band reflecting both their personalities and their early audiences. Beatles appealed to girls first - from office workers taking lunch breaks in Cavern onwards. Beatles warmed up the girls and the boyfriends benefited! Ringo had played professionally in Butlins summer seasons so catered for all age dance halls including all the traditional steps for ballroom as well as rock 'n roll. Keith Richards once remarked about many bands able to rock but few could roll. Much as I love The Who, I'd have to concede that they are a, perhaps the prototypical, rock band without the roll

Macca said he heard other groups play Long Tall Sally and he said we were going to do Long Tall Sally so now what are they going to do? The other groups already did it. So he realized that if they had their own original songs the others couldn’t copy them. And they wouldn’t repeat the same songs on stage. John always sang sharp, George always flat, and Paul usually sang on pitch. When they sang together in harmony their pitch differences also created an expansive chorus effect. Ringo always sang very flat, sometimes dystonic, and I can't think of any case where Ringo sang in harmony with the others or they with him. I believe that Ringo sang the lead on one song on each of their albums. Paul really understood counterpoint, which enhanced the harmonies and also allowed him to play the interesting bass phrases that you will enjoy over and over again as you progress through the albums. Paul also has a great sense of rhythm, which you can hear in those bass phrases. Paul played drums on one song that I know of: The Ballad of John and Yoko, apparently because Ringo wasn't in the studio at the time it was recorded.

Just so you know, I usually don't watch reactors who pause. In fact, it's been one of my pet peeves! But the way you are doing it, makes all the difference! I just love your attention to the details in the singers and songs! You really are starting to "get" all the things that made The Beatles so unique and exciting, and completely irresistible! As you pointed out, even in their earliest days, they packed every song, no matter the length, with so many unexpected surprises! It was so much fun just anticipating "what they would do next", both within individual songs, and from song to song and album to album! It is also a ton of fun watching you react, and remembering that whole "first-listen, glued-to-the-radio" experience! Also, gotta tell ya that I LOVE your whole "Meryl Streep" vibe! She has been my favorite actress since 1978! Thanks for your work, and your willingness to tackle The Fab Four's discography in chronilogical order!

Completely delighted with you. So, you intend to jump to their last album next? No no no. "With the Beatles" (or Meet, for the English release) please. You can have so much fun with these guys. Yes, copyright is a real challenge, but this one came out so WELL! Subscribing.

I’m glad the Beatles won the poll of who you should listen to!!! I’d love it if you’d eventually do this with George Harrison as a solo artist. :-)

Lennon has the most profound voice. Anna is 👍❤️ twist and shout is amazing. The harmonies are so good, you could not hide them low and barely audible

Love your video. In reference to Ringo’s drumming: simply put, they wouldn’t have been the Beatles without him. Ringo plays uniquely to each the song. Check out Sina’s video, What makes Ringo a Great Drummer.

I do think when listening to the Beatles for the first time, it helps to go chronologically, so that you can hear the progression of their music and the different styles each member adopts, so that just be listening to it, you can tell who wrote what song. Also, as a drummer, I can guarantee that Ringo is a spectacular drummer, he’s the reason I became a drummer and why I adopted his style.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO. As a Beatle fan it makes me so happy to see other people truly experience their music for the first time (truly= thoroughly, focused, and diving into their albums). And it made me so happy seeing you discover all of those tiny bits that make Beatles so special and to name them the way you do. And react to them also so emotionally and actually DIG their music, it's contagious, you know :) It reminded me so much od the freshness I felt when I started to be a Beatles fan (around 1995, 12 years old then). Thank you for this video, I've subscribed and definitely going to watch the whole series and share it to my Beatle friends! It's great that you knew about the A and B side though.. it was originally LP sides, not cassettes 😉.

This is such a great video to watch as a life-long Beatles fan! It makes me appreciate the music even more to see its effect on someone who's just hearing it for the first time. It's especially emotional seeing you being so taken with John Lennon's vocals, as he famously hated his voice and his vocals. He used to ask producers to "put ketchup on it", meaning either heavy reverb, or several extra vocal tracks on top of his vocal, so his voice would be masked or hidden away from plain sight. It's hard to understand how he could feel that way, but I suppose we're often our own worst enemies. If you want a clear example of his powerful voice, check out "Out The Blue" from his album Mind Games. Love

You didn't hear this from me, but John Lennon would sometimes sing "Listen do you want to hold a penis?" during their live performances

We hear our own voices very differently from how other people hear them. Maybe he was unfortunate in how he heard himself. Clapton took a long time to be confident to sing in public too
