Just a quick note on your comments about covers. When the Beatles first came out it was incredibly rare for a pop artist to write songs, it was more like today where the songs were written by professional songwriters and artists used to be performers. It was the Beatles that really shifted the dynamic and pushed the industry to find talent that wrote and performed their own music. This is why John and Paul used to look up to Buddy Holly because he famously wrote his own music.

@@CallMeCaroline Before the Beatles, the biggest stars in music all put out songs that they didn't write. I'm a huge Elvis Presley fan of his early period (1954-58 before he went into the Army), but he did not write a single song even though he had countless #1 hits. He had great music, had a great voice, had a great band behind him (DJ Fontanna on drums, Bill Black on bass, and Scotty Moore on guitar) which many consider the first "rock band", and they were awesome! But they were all doing either covers of other people's songs or recording songs that were written for Elvis by songwriters (Primarily Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller). When The Beatles hit the Ed Sullivan show in February of 1964, it changed everything. Because when they showed up with I Want To Hold Your Hand and I Saw Her Standing There and Please Please Me, they weren't just songs no one ever heard of - they were THEIR songs. That was a whole new concept - these guys WROTE the lyrics, WROTE the music, ARRANGED everything themselves, PLAYED their own instruments, and SANG the songs while they were at it. All in one self contained unit. Honestly, it ticked a lot of people in the industry off as well. "Professional song writers" were left without a job if these guys got too influential. It might influence other people to pick up a guitar and write a song and play it themselves. And it did! Rock n roll exploded in the 1960-80s in unimaginable ways all thanks to the Beatles.

Elvis did write PART of Heartbreak Hotel--the song that really changed John Lennons life. But The Beatles amaze me (and almost all artists) with their brilliance and such variance in their songs and tunes. @@joe6096 There were some strong rock and pop acts that wrote, played and sang their own material before the Beatles. Big examples are Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and to a lesser extent, Paul Anka. (Anka had some great songs, but he was more pop than rock.) So the Beatles weren't the first to write and play their own rock songs. However, the Beatles' songs and hits just kept coming and coming. Combine that with Beatlemania and the message was unmistakable: Write your own songs, and have a distinctive look and sound. The Beatles weren't the first, but they are the archetype.

The first side of the four-sided White Album (a double album) featured Lennon prominently. Although the opening song is a McCartney piece ("Back in the USSR"), Lennon's stuff dominates thereafter, imparting that dark, rough tone so characteristic of John. It provides a sharp contrast to McCartney's party-boy humor---think "O'Bla Dee, O'Bla Da" or his gentle touch, e.g., "Mother Nature's Son."

@@kobcritic624 I know what you mean, and I won't pretend I don't. I have long suspected that McCartney's ascent as a hit-song writer with works like "Hey Jude" and "Let It Be" and "The Long and Winding Road" ultimately led to the group's break-up. The other three, especially John, must have resented what he, George and Ringo felt as their becoming no more than a back-up band for The Super Star. Yet despite Paul's flare for composing mega-hits, Lennon's genius endured. Songs like "Come Together," "She's So Heavy," "Because," "Don't Let Me Down" and "Across the Universe" attest to his brilliance as well as to his uncanny gift for complementing Paul in tone, in style, in personality. Without Lennon, McCartney might well have turned into a band leader like Lawrence Welk or Guy Lombardo. It was primarily Lennon who gave the group their dark, wild, rebellious edge---a dimension that would never have suited the Lawrence Welk Show. It was Lennon who could sneer at anything: organized religion; pop music; even his own group, the Beatles. God bless him. I sure do miss John Lennon---or at least the John Lennon I remember from my youth. I wonder what he would have thought of today's cancel culture. Well, not exactly. @@michaeldrwiega9325 Utter bosh. McCartney was at *least* as interested in experimentation and paving new ground as Lennon. Lawrence Welk, good grief. Who's the one who pushed for the through-line of Sgt. Pepper that helped make it such a breakthrough instant classic? Who worked w/the orchestra on "A Day in the Life"? Who enthusiastically brought Martin a bunch of sound snippets (e.g., his own seagull/laughing FX) to enhance the unique "Tomorrow Never Knows," which wasn't even his song? (McCartney was less likely than Lennon to mentally/creatively check out when it wasn't his own work--not that he *never* checked out, alas; unfortunately both McCartney and Lennon did with some of Harrison's output. But it's very clear Lennon had even fewer fucks to give in service of the others' creations.) McCartney's ambitious hunger to push himself gave us the aching emotional honesty of "For No One," the empathy of "Eleanor Rigby" and the thrashing "Helter Skelter" just because he wanted to show just how hard the Beatles could rock. And the unparalleled inventive beauty of Abbey Road's B-side medley, seamlessly tying together Lennon's exquisite "Because" as well as half-finished songs from both composers, would not exist without McCartney's work with George Martin. Look, adore Lennon by all means. I certainly do. There would be no Beatles without him, he was the original driving force behind the band. Above all, despite his demons that could make him such a prickly sod, he was a creative genius and a phenomenal singer who changed the world of music forever. The exact same can be said of McCartney. He's also a musical magpie with an all-encompassing thirst for all types of music and a passion for finding ways to incorporate different styles just to see how they might work together. Given his extraordinary output and lengthy career, the results of these experiments vary. Depending on one's taste, one can find them ranging from exciting to puzzling, from clever to eyerolling, from thoughtful to wrongheaded. And some--more than just a few, that's for sure--are quite simply incandescently brilliant. I've never understood the need some fans have to insult one musician in order to boost that musician's partner. Lennon/McCartney influenced, inspired and spurred on each other. So much of their early music gets dismissed because of the lovey-dovey, saccharine lyrics, but there is still great complexity in the music, and the melodies are some of the catchiest, most beautiful pop music that has ever been written.

Caroline should watch concerts from this period too. Their albums were basically live stage performances that were captured in the studio. They eventually began to learn more about studio recording which evolved into new possibilities. They were influenced by early rock & roll and these albums were of that genre. As the record company had them producing 2 albums a year, the Beatles were maturing during the innovative 1960's. It's amazing that they completed their Beatles music catalog while still in their 20s.

OMG you are actually listening to them in ORDER ?!! You are in for an amazing ride, once you get past 1965, you will get to experience the unimaginable change they made to music, in the order that it happened. Most ppl (who are like under 70) cannot imagine how radically they changed music, given where they came from, and where music went, mostly due to their incredible evolution, which should be more qualified as a REVOLUTION of music. Enjoy, and thanks for sharing your exp openly. I wish I could hear the Beatles for the first time now!! I heard them all pelle-mêle as a kid cuz they were still playing on the radio, on classic rock stations and they were my parents generation so there were Beatles records being played in the house, as far back as I can remember.

Oh Caroline, it is such a pleasure to watch you discover these albums. I'm having so much fun with your Beatles videos. I can imagine at times, that the same surprised expression in your face when you hear something intriguing in a song for the first time, happened similarly all those decades ago with the young young teenage girls of the sixties that are now old enough to be grandmothers. Regarding some of the comments and questions you made; here's some tidbits to put what you hear in perspective. Most of the cover songs they recorded were songs they'd been playing live in Liverpool for years (as The Beatles from 1960-1962). Also, please keep in mind that the record industry was in many ways still in its toddler years (to say infancy seemed an exaggeration). Not until after WW2 and most specifically in the late fifties and early sixties (even before the Beatles) did sales begin to target the youth. Music albums never sold as much as they did until after The Beatles. Another thing to take note is that your average artist would record material composed by a professional songwriter. Ever hear of Tin Pan Alley or The Brillo Building? These are places where producers would go to buy songs for the artists they were going to record. Very few acts did it all: sing and play their own material (Chuck Berry is a notable exception that first comes to mind; Buddy Holly another) and many that might have tried were not allowed to record them because the label wouldn't chance it with an amateur songwriter. Of their generation, The Beatles weren't the first to record their own songs. The Beach Boys in America before them had Brian Wilson as composer and head member of the band. But The Beatles, due to the extraordinary worldwide success they achieved within a years time (1963-1964), made themselves the standard for all to (try to) immolate. Their ability to come up with song after song, all melodically catchy and artistically good, lead them to not need to record covers, although they would continue to do so, albeit in lesser frequency, until 1965. Their next album, Hard Days Night was done under the pressure of being a soundtrack for their first feature film. Lennon claims that the majority of these new songs were "knocked off" by him.

It's not easy to know the best way to react to The Beatles. Chronologically certainly makes sense to see the progression of them as songwriters. However they often didn't put their singles on albums so you are already missing out on some songs they felt were their most commercial. For instance She Loves You was probably the perfect 3 minute pop song. I can't wait to see your face when you start reacting to albums from 1966 onwards. Tomorrow Never Knows will either blow your mind or leave you perplexed. My father was musician in 1960's. He gave me his record collection in 1974 when I was 5 and it contained lots of Beatle records. At age 5 it was their early stuff that interested me. By age 11 I was getting into the later stuff, even if I didn't understand all of it.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying with some singles not being on certain albums. When I started collecting Beatle albums in the 70s I was buying mostly the American versions, and occasionally a store would have some British import albums too. It's ironic that she titled this video the Beatles 2nd Album because in the USA there actually was an album titled The Beatles Second Album. Meet The Beatles was their first album in the USA which featured more than half of the songs that appeared on With the Beatles. The cover design had the same photo but with some variations in design. Please Please Me wasn't released as their first album in the USA because the record companies figured it wouldn't have the impact of the songs that appeared on Meet The Beatles, and they were correct. The 3 featured songs that gave Meet The Beatles popularity were I Want To Hiold Your Hand, I saw Her Standing There and All My Loving. Ishould include This Boy to that list because all 4 I believe were performed during that US visit.

This is their early days when they were definitely writing love songs and relationship songo, many danceable. I love your enthusiastic stabs at anticipating the song style by title. I also just your analysis and commentary based on your knowledge of music and songwriting! These "First listen" videos are hits to me! I love 'em! Please keep them up and, yes, do them in chronological order. (For the Beatles, the whole "cover" deal came about because in Hamburg, where they really got tight and great as a band (seven hours playing a night will do that!) they didn't have writing time. Covers became the way to keep there show fresh (the club go'ers would request them or you'd find songs you wanted to try, work them up before the doors would open and keep polishing them up by playing them night after night. It was the band way! Once they hit it big in America, their manager and EMI records wanted to wanted to cash in on their popularity, so covers became the fillers on an nearly impossible record release schedule. Second time watching. It has become one of my favorite things at the moment to listen to the Beatles and watch you listening along. It is like I am sharing them with you or something. It is really delightful. You are so adorable and I love your insights to the technical side of things which I often have not noticed, or been able to put in to words before. The Beatles wrote and gave the Rolling Stones the song, "I Wanna Be Your Man." They played "I Wanna Be Your Man" on The Top of the Pops first show of 1964. It later charted at #12. Their first song, "Come On," which wasn't greatly promoted, had reached #21 the prior year. The media, and the Stone's manager, made up a rivalry between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, as the bad guys against the Beatles Good Guys, even having them pose unsmiling on their first album cover. In reality the two groups were never rivals. They were actually friends. In a conversation between Jagger and Lennon, John asked him what he thought about this rivalry they were supposed to be having, and Mick told John, the Stones never had a chance to compete with the Beatles. You guys have three lead vocalists to our one. The Rolling Stones actually beat out the Beatles in 1964, in two surveys, as the United Kingdom's most popular band, but after that, they were always trailing them in the charts, until 1971, after the Beatles disbanded, they were named, "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World," after the release of Sticky Fingers. Decca Records in London signed the Rolling Stones under recommendation of George Harrison. Decca had declined to sign the Beatles when they had the chance. I suppose they didn't want to make that mistake again. Regrettably for the Beatles, Decca gave the Stones a great deal, with freedom of production and ownership of their own song rights, which the Beatles had trouble with themselves in later years.

ALWAYS LOVED that! "TIL THERE WAS YOU" is from the stage and movie musical "THE MUSIC MAN" The Motown "girl group" THE MARVELETTES sang "PLEASE MR. POSTMAN" originally. The guitars on "HOLD ME TIGHT" always remind me of the rhythm of a chugging train and also when it slows down at the end like it's pulling into a train station. It 's my FAVORITE SONG on this album.....I LOVE how Paul's voice sounds when he says "YOU DON'T KNOW," especially the 2nd time he says it. During "YOU'VE REALLY GOT A HOLD ON ME" as far as I am concerned you can never have TOO MUCH harmony! LOL. Have you ever heard how THE STONES did "I WANNA BE YOUR MAN"" It's done very differently from the Beatles version. They gave it to the Stones and I think it was the Stones first hit. I love the call and response in this album, especially on "DEVIL IN HER HEART." Seems like it's not used anymore in todays music. I'm really excited for you and truly appreciate your analysis of the tracks as you listen to them. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

As you move forward, you'll find that all you CAN expect is the unexpected. I appreciate your reaction, you obviously know music and are having fun with this. I learned of the Beatles in 1964 and they are still my go-to artists. Meredith Willson would be pleased with your cover. ✌😁👍
