Finally The Kinks. My second favorite group in the world. Brothers Ray (songwriter & lead vocalist) and Dave (lead guitarist, backing vocals) harmonize like most siblings do. After a rollicking start, Ray became a great songwriter of the human condition and observing everyday life for our pleasure. The corresponding single DAYS is another great little song. This album, from 1968 was overlooked by the American public as The Kinks fell out of favor. Only to return with Lola in the 70's and continued to wax and wane throughout their career. Plenty of material to absorb. Face To Face, Arthur or The Decline of The British Empire, Lola VS The Powerman and the Moneygoround, etc., etc.

This album sold so poorly on release that it's sales figures were lumped in with the previous album (either Something Else or a greatest hits album released around the same time depending upon the source). Over the years, critical acclaim and sales grew and now it's one of The Kink's highest selling albums. This album and "Do You Remember Walter" came out in late 1968 or 9 years before ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky".

Glad to see you got it back up. The Kinks were a another curveball for sure. You're definitely keeping us on our toes. The Kinks are great, I absolutely get a Sgt. Peppers feel to this album. Has a carnival vibe in a lot of spots. The harmonies are Beatles-esque for sure. Do You Remember Walter was about 9 years before Mr. Blue Sky. I guess ELO were Kinks fans lol. (Although I've read that ELO actually cited the McCartney section of A Day In The Life as their inspiration for the opening of Mr Blue Sky). Keep up the great work! Love your constant positivity.

Why do people always cite the Beatles as being the source/first for aspects of music recorded by bands that were their peers? The kinks were around since 63', they were contempories in the same melting pot of influence and experimentation - so why presume the harmonies were bealtle-esque, just because they were around at the same time. I could say that the beatles harminies were kinks-esque, but that would be just as silly - no band had a monopoloy on harmonies!

I’m discovering this album too - a very nice surprise! I am hearing some kind of brilliant combination of Beach Boys vocals and superb Beatles-style harmonies. I agree with you this is very Beatles-esque though The Kinks have a genius of their own. I like the idea behind the theme too. "Preserving the old ways from being abused" sounds even more relevant to me 50 years later. Picture Book is great fun and rightfully I think a recognized hit. The music is light and the lyrics are funny but clever too and all in all this 1st side is a very pleasant uplifting experience. Thank you 1000 times for another exciting and brillant video Crystal. You know what's funny? Weird Al wrote this song in 1980, then there was an issue with the Kink's record label, so it was shelved until 1985 - by which time the Star Wars movies were seemingly over and some of the lyrics seemed out of date, with "Luke" saying, "I know that I'll be coming back someday. I'll be playing this part til I'm old and grey. The long term contract I had to sign says I'll be making these movies to the end of time." I was a big Weird Al fan growing up. (I wasn't allowed to buy comedy albums because my father was a musician who was strict about albums only being about the music and not for jokes, but I could buy Weird Al albums and pretend I was listening to music while secretly enjoying the jokes.) And I probably listened to this song a thousand times, thinking, "Well those lyrics didn't age well." Flash forward to today, and the lyrics make perfect sense and are funnier than they were in 1985!

I daresay the Kinks are prized for Ray Davies' lyrics and melodic prowess more than for musical innovation, but there often is a good deal going on underneath the surface of those simple arrangements. "Sitting By The Riverside" provides one example, where the pastoral sweetness is threatened by dissonance that, on the verge of becoming full-blown cacophony, suddenly resolves into peace. Knowing how Ray can inject snippets of pathos into an otherwise sweet and fun song with just one word - or the smallest vocal tweak - I tend to assume such musical moments are just as subversive in their own way. Sometimes he does it so subtly that fans can disagree as to the feeling he wants to convey. This may be their most straightforward album of all those from Face To Face onward, but it includes at least one prime example of that dichotomy in "People Take Pictures Of Each Other" on Side 2. I hope you'll continue on your Kinks journey; even without digging into the lyrical twists, their music is just so darned fun to listen to!

Very interesting you say at 11:09 that it could be used in a comedy film and as an intro scene. Hot Fuzz (comedy film) used it to introduce the village the first time Sgt Angel sees it in the day. Short clip here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXvFmYWQpsaYrMU

Alright, now if this channel really takes off and the notion that the proper unit of engagement for classic rock is the SIDE, not the song, is brought back into the popular consciousness, then we'll really be getting somewhere.

love The Kinks, Ray looking at the everyday and putting it to music, the small things but the big ideas. and quite personal at times but stuff everyone can understand. Oklahoma USA is heartbreakingly beautiful especially when you add the story of his sister dying of a heart attack on his birthday while at a local palais dancing to a song from the musical Oklahoma. Like McCartney could do with Penny Lane or Junk, Ray could bring to life places and inanimate objects and find the magic in the everyday.

I was never much on the Kinks but I thought Arthur was a great sadly overlooked album.

Hello Crystal and hello everyone... Hmmm... With all due respect... Has no one really noticed what's going on here? 'The Village Green Preservation Society' doesn't have not even far production values on the level of 'Sargeant Pepper', let alone such post production... It doesn't have the eminence of the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop and expert in classical music recordings like George Martin directing everything... nor do they have sky-high budgets of promotion like those of the Beatles... Friends, just like 'Something Else' is the anti-1967 album, this record is the anti-Sargeant Pepper... Simply because you will find no connection with exuberance... That's why 'The Village Green Preservation Society' is pointed out as not only the first conceptual album, but also the genuine ancestor of Indie Rock. I think that you should reconsider certain pre-established notions in the common consciousness of the general public. The Kinks cannot be compared to the Beatles simply because they were never an MK Ultra device of mass cultural distraction. In fact, if there is one constant in the Kinks' career, it's their refusal to be what the Beatles represent so well. The Kinks have been such professional misfits, with their ridiculously disgraceful behavior, self-destructive strategies and epic battles up and down the stage, that they could never have gotten that certain "Disney treatment" some others enjoy... Especially the Beatles. Even so paradoxically, there are few precursor groups in as many aspects as the Kinks: distortion, Hard Rock, Power Pop, proto Punk, proto Metal, controlled feedback, eastern drones, Brit Pop, Indie Rock, Vaudeville Pop, conceptual video clips, thematic albums, conceptual LPs, Rock Operas, sociological poetry... anglocentrism in pop culture...

After all the great albums of these past months, this Kinks album is kind of underwhelming..«Something Else» is really a stronger collection of songs.

Both are very good. But this album is more unified, with more of a concept, so I like the ambition.

Ray Davies is still the most under-appreciated song writer from the Brit. Invasion. So perceptive and witty. IMO, Arthur is in the top 10 all time great rock records. Crystal, I'm 70 and have been a Kink fanatic since they broke. I have 100% of their albums and have seen them at least 17 times, including Philharmonic Hall in March, 1971, when Ray fell back into Dave's back line. The stories I could tell you. Every Kinks Show was such great fun. Sir Ray was a natural front man.

Apparently you use some kind of program that evades the KZbin monitoring algorithm by regularly/randomly splicing up the song. Well what good is disguising the song from the algorithm if you're also making it unlistenable for the listener who has not already heard it? So I guess your show is only for people who already know the music? There is no good reason for you to embrace this format. Other reactors are able to play entire songs. So could you but instead you lazily and mindlessly embrace an app that completely ruins the listening experience and is an insult to to your audience and to yourself. Maybe have a little more respect for people and a little less respect for technology.

If you knew KZbin's guidelines about copyrighted music, you would know that playing a song in its entirety, let alone an album, is not permitted. And if you can't appreciate a brilliant artist doing an excellent job for free, you better move on instead of making insulting and irrelevant comments.

@@StephaneSmarties How can I appreciate a "brilliant artist doing an excellent job for free" when she uses an annoying app that jumbles up the music so much that you can't appreciate it at all? Let me repeat my question. Is this channel only for people who have already heard the music in question? Because no one who hasn't already heard the music is able to appreciate it(or listen to it at all) once it's been disguised(disfigured) by that stupid app. Stop making excuses for her and answer the question.

@@StephaneSmarties Exactly where have I been impolite? For some reason you interpret legitimate criticism and direct inquiry as something offensive and/or impolite. That's just your way of avoiding giving a clear and concise answer, I guess? Anyway, aren't you violating the principle that you lead with in your first comment? Something about not commenting on things about which you know nothing? Stop answering(poorly) questions meant for other people when it's more than likely that you'd struggle to answer for yourself(before the Lord).
