This was looked down upon by the country music folks back in the 70's - NOW they can't duplicate it even as they try over and over again. Lynyrd Skynyrd - the Outlaws - Molly Hatchet - 38 Special - Nobody can touch them today.

Can't believe there are still people just discovering this great music. I'm 57 and grew up on Southern rock like Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers. The Marshall Tucker Band is from my state of South Carolina. Glad that you like it. Southern rock is basically a fusion of country, rock, blues.

Great reaction with your Dad. MTB had so many great songs. I have to rank them 2nd to the Allman Brothers on my all time Southern Rock artists. Did you know that Toy Caldwell who is the lead guitarist only sang a few of their songs, Can't You See being one of them. Wait till you hear the golden voice of Doug Gray, lead singer of MTB! And Jerry Eubanks the flute player also plays Sax on their songs ! Here are a few more songs you might react to by MTB. Desert Skies Heard It In A Love Song 24 Hours At A Time Take The Highway

Born & raised in Memphis but was never a country, or even countrified, music fan. Grew up with blues, rhythm & blues, rock n roll, and rock. But... Love these guys (and, in a similar vein, The Allman Brothers). In fact, this song is one of my all time faves that I never get tired of. So unique and simultaneously ragged, rough, and angelically beautiful. Another great reaction Dad & son-- and I'd never seen this live before, so thank you!!!

I don't generally go in for a lot of C&W music. But one of my favorites is MTB's Heard It In A Lovesong. Sonically, it runs the gamut from traditional Nashville country to blue grass to New Orleans keys to hints of zydeco and a good dash of southwest Tex-Mex flavor in there as well. MTB was one of the more versatile country groups back in the day.
@TMF19543 жыл бұрын
Marshall Tucker Band was friends with Charlie Daniels, Allman Brothers and Skynyrd. They were discovered by Wet Willie. Charlie Daniels and Toy Caldwell were very good friends. Toy Caldwell helped Charlie along when he was first touring. Charlie Daniels opened for Marshall Tucker sometimes until Charlie became a headliner himself. Toy used to play at Charlie's Volunteer Jams. Toy helped Hank Williams Jr. with his first album that he did when he stopped doing his dad's music. Toy played with Lynyrd Skynyd when the did their reunion tour. Toy Caldwell was a multi talented musician. He wrote the majority of the Marshall Tucker songs. He could play pedal steel as well as the guitar. His biography and history is very diverse and interesting.

Great choice, Dad! 👍 "Heard It In A Love Song" is another good MTB track, but definitely a little less rock, a little more country. Toy Caldwell and the boys created something amazing with "Can't You See" but is it the apex of Southern Rock? I don't think you've heard enough to decide that, yet. Allman Brothers: "One Way Out" (at Fillmore East); "Blue Sky"; "Statesboro Blues"; "Jessica"; "Ramblin' Man"; "Midnight Rider". And then there's the Skynyrd catalogue, not to mention ZZ Top and others. Lots of incredible stuff left to discover.

Toy Caldwell lost both his younger brothers Tim and Tommy (bass player) within a month of each other to car accidents in 1980. He was also a United States Marine Corps Vietnam War combat vet (WIA). Great reaction guys,and yes - Toy Caldwell was a legend on the guitar,Mr.Thunderthumb - he was in a league of his own,the same as Duane Allman from The Allman Brothers Band was. Even Toys brother Tommy on bass,played with his thumb,as it was the way they were taught. The Marshall Tucker Band surely deserve to be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame,but it is not the institution it once was. Theres plenty of MTB to react to,especially with main vocalist Doug Gray and his amazing vocal capabilities. Take your pick to react to anything from their 70's early 80's period and you wont be disappointed.Oh and by the way - the actual Marshall Tucker,whom the band was named after,just turned 94 I think ? this past week - amazing,and Doug Gray was there to celebrate with him .

MTB blended genres of blues, jazz & country into their Southern Rock sound beautifully. One of the best bands ever. Catch EVERYthing off of the "Carolina Dreams" album. And of course "Searchin' For A Rainbow" from the album of the same name. RIP Toy Caldwell (The fastest thumb in the South), preceded in death by his brother Tommy (playing bass next to Toy), Rhythm guitarist George McCorkle has also passed. God rest their souls. MTB was a wonderful band to see live way back in the day! Doug Gray's (lead vocals) enthusiasm is absolutely contagious. No frills, no flash just straight up damn good music.
