How is it to road trip a Tesla Model Y? I took my 2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range on its first major road trip, the total miles travelled roundtrip is 1,489 Miles from North Carolina to Long Island New York. In this video, I share my experience using Tesla Autopilot in the Model Y, the Tesla Supercharger network, and how much it cost to road trip a Tesla Model Y. It’s quicker to unplug around 50-60% and go to the next charger.

But that’s gonna have me stop a lot more if I was to charge only to 50-60% from around 10%. It’s worth experimenting with though.

@@LamarMK the car charges the fastest from 10-50%. Riding that curve and unplugging will be the fastest way to road trip

@@matthewevans2831 Oh, that makes sense now. Thanks for letting me know that, this was my first major road trip supercharger experience. My aim now is to be at a Supercharger for no more than 30mins, figure that will give everyone enough time to stretch their legs and grab food etc.

Really loved you're video!!! Im getting ready to get a new tesla performance edition!!! Im giving up my mercedes SL550 so I'm excited about saving on expenses!!! My benz gets around 12 to 14 with 93 octane required! So a road trip can easily cost 2,500 dollars or more depending on miles and speeds driven!!! 200 miles on a full charge, wow? If you drive under 70 you can increase range .

On the trip from 100% to the 24 miles remaining it was at 7%, didn’t get to include that part of the clip in the video. You’re right going below 70mph would probably get it close to 300 miles instead of the 248 miles it did. Majority of the drive the speed limit was 70mph and I didn’t want to go below that.

​@LamarMK I've only rented Teslas on two occasions. I would do the speed limit on highways often and wait for somebody to "try" to pass me. Then, I'd teach them a quick lesson. 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds, fool. 😂

you should def not charge past 50% if youre trying to have the fastest road trip. its more stops but you will literally shave hours off of your trip. you will spend 15 min charging per stop and get half the battery vs 1 hour of charging and getting a full battery. its 4 times quicker to unplug at 50% and arrive with under 10%

Two - play the 5%-50% SoC game on superchargers to get the fastest charging times. Three - plan long charging sessions around meal times. Four - charge enough to get to the next charging station. Shorter stops are fasters.

I’m debating on getting this for my work commute. One way to work is 167miles then I drive back the next day I do this 8-10 times a month. Would a model y long range work for me?

Yes, it would. If you need to charge you can always charge on your way back home or you can charge overnight where you stay.

So our experiences are very similar in terms of its lost range. I drove from Long Island to Poconos, PA, which is about 145 miles; however, my battery dropped from 96% to 30% upon arrival. Unfortunate. Right?

Oh wow! Very similar range loss of indeed. With 30% left you’d probably still travel a bit over 200 miles like I did. People say driving under 70mph will maximize range, but I’m not into that I prefer to drive at or 5+ above the posted speed limit. That is why I’m not a fan of EV’s that are under 300 miles EPA, because in the real world it will be way less.
