After hostilities have broken out in Central Europe, the race is on as a pressured US Navy escort force battle off Soviet bomber and submarine attacks on a perilous quest to reinforce NATO defenders in Europe. Meanwhile, in the Persian Gulf, the conflict between Iran and Iraq risks escalating into a larger confrontation between superpowers as both sides indiscriminately attack neutral merchant shipping. And in the Norwegian Sea, an outnumbered Soviet surface force challenges the might of a massive US Navy amphibious force bound for occupied Norway...
Brought to you by the lead designer of Cold Waters, Sea Power lets you control NATO and Warsaw Pact forces in a modern naval conflict. Graphics of Sea Power looks nice but for this era RTS would need to measure up to Harpoon which I put 1000's of hours of time into playing back in the day (90's), yeah I'm old 😶‍🌫. Note in game play seen here the Krivak class frigate gets hit (at around 6:18) and is seen burning stem to stern. Seconds later fires are out and no damage is seen 🤔. In Harpoon there were no flashy graphics but a huge # of units you could control from many different countries (especially if you got the four expansion packs). At this point in game development Sea Power is lacking in that regard. In a strat. game like this the tactical map (on lower left in Sea Power) is way more important than close-up views of individual units. In such a game there is invariably a ton of micro-management that needs to be done, so the tactical view was way more important. In Harpoon I'd turn off animations for in large scale conflicts would slow down the game play (& my computers CPU 😵) too much. Similarly had Harpoon 2 & Fleet Commander (available on Steam) games as well. Both had nicer graphics but game play wasn't as good. Kinda wish could load Harpoon again but no where to insert 3 1/2 floppy discs (game was on a lot of them) on my current rig 😋. PS / FYI - Sherm Harpoon is the game I learned the importance of SEAD in sea fighting conflicts (aka - Red Dragon) cough, cough 😉.

They need a Falkland war mission in this game and factions, RN and Argentine Navy. I mean it was a major naval conflict of the Cold war era and it did show the need for Anti missile systems like CWIS.

Well unfortunately we will have to wait for a DLC as the Royal Navy will not be available in the initial release of the game. Iran for the Persian Gulf scenario however is confirmed to be in the game.

@@johnmurphy5689 Maybe a whole Expansion dedicated to the Falkland war would be the for best thing, Gives them more time and room to fully build on the scenarios, Units and what ifs. Better to not rush everything into the game on Launch and as result have flaws in it.

This has been my most hyped game of the century. I’ve had this on my wishlist since 2019 and joined their discord to closely fallow the game’s development for about a year now, and these years of waiting have been PAINFUL but I’m sure it will well worth it in the end. And honestly I’m glad they haven’t released a release day yet. And are going with a slower but much more chilled “we’ll release it when we think it’s ready” attitude. Which after all these years will produce the PERFECT game. And not let anything get rushed.

They would be useful bait... there are a lot of issues with the fact they have cannons instead of missiles. The hard part is figuring out how to use those battleships when everything out ranges their guns.

@@peterthomas2923 I got it from Steam last year and it WORKS! i7, 16GB, Win 10, didn't need to do anything to it. Just worked. Sadly I cannot get it to run with the Warship Database Project which took the game to a whole new level.

Honestly this is pretty cool, I've been looking at getting back into naval strategy games.. I loved pacific storm allies as a kid (well I never figured out the campaign just did random battles) I went back and was sad at how bad the graphics and controls were and really haven't found a good modern replacement yet.

I've been following this game since it was very early after its announcement, absolutely cannot wait to play it. There has been modelled damage shown off for some US ships, I think it just wasn't ready for this showcase, but it will definitely be there.

How about some love for Harpoon. It's got to be one of the grand old games of Cold war naval combat. I would spend hours in middle school pouring over the ship stats trying to figure out how to win some scenario or another. Great times!!

Im really pumped about this game, but im a little concerned about aircraft and how they get implimented... War on the Sea was made by a splinter group of Killerfishh Games employees, and while the game can be fun, the employment of aircraft is an absolute headache and needs much more automation to really be effective. I'm hoping that Sea Power will have tools that will allow players to streamline and automate aircraft as smoothly as possible, especially with CVs operating in player fleets. Tools allowing players to set mission areas or patrol boxes, designating types of missions, and assigning CVs to automatically fill those missions would be great, or assigning those mission boxes to move with a fleet (CAP or ASW patrol), or to stay static in space (anti shipping strike, CAP patrol zones) would be amazingly handy. Aircraft are super powerful assets in these games, but they are extremely micro heavy, and it can take away from actually playing the rest of the game. Here's hoping Killerfish has a nice solution to aircraft management.

I loved Cold Waters and wanted surface combat, while DOT mod exists for CW it's limited and Sea Power looks like the game of my dreams! Def on the hype train! If this is a modern battle stations Pacific I will buy it on day one

I added Sea Power to my Steam wishlist in September 2020. Since then, I've finished Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, SW Jedi Fallen Order, Witcher 3, RDR2, and currently 40 hours into Horizon Zero Dawn. Just wondering if Sea Power will be released before I reach 150 hours in HZD...

I guess if it is indeed Fleet Command of the 2020s let's hope it has better AI, which was a major weakness of Fleet Command, and keeps it's database open for modding (especially the NWP mod level of modding for Sea Power).

I would like to see player control over carrier based strike packages, so I can do things like send three flights of six A6 Intruders, who can each launch six missiles, for a total of 108 simultaneous Harpoon missiles arrival on target. That's the doctrine for punching through Soviet defenses, so I would expect it to be in the game. That's just one example of the fun I can envision.

I played and enjoyed Fleet Command from Jane/NWS/Sonalyst/Stream, only one problem with et.al, "Crash To Desktop". Trust modern software will not have that problem.

I would like to see some kind of French ship inside the game ! They really had their own systems, missiles and even design compared to other nations ! For instance a Suffren missile launcher frigate would be awesome

This is going to be fun. There's a mod for Cold Waters where you can play as a small ship. So I edited the ammo and spam missiles on enemy fleet, or spam torpedoes on enemy sub.

Cold Waters only did sub sim which played alright, kind of like modern "Sub Command" from Sonalysts. I loved Dangerous Waters (also from Sonalysts) which allowed control of every platform individually and simultaneously as a fleet. It looks like Sea Power will be a modern graphics version of Dangerous Waters, and the gameplay looks very similar, just 17 years later. I wish Sonalysts came back with another entry in their great naval sims!

One scenario that I think might be Interesting would be an In-Game Adaptation of @Rimmy - Downunder Gaming's "Back Again: 1975" Vietnam War interactive Series from the ArmA 3 Community where you Have an Allied Carrier Force with the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), HMAS Melbourne (R21) and the HMAS Brisbane (D 41) providing Offshore Naval Gun fire and Air Support to American and Australian Forces Landing Via UH-1D Huey "Slick" Transport Helicopters in and around the Vicinity of Saigon. To quote Warpugs with some of the Troops Landing in Saigon Itself.... "I Literally just Watched one of our Hueys land on top of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon while in Zeus mode. *We're going back Rimmy! The Same way we F!cking Left!*"

I'm with you on the damage modeling needing to improve in these games. Seems like they work on everything else, and then tack on 1998 damage effects as an afterthought. This isn't just in these games, but lots of games out there. The only games I can think of that do it right is Post Scriptum/Squad, and also the Graviteam games which have very detailed damage modeling.

I enjoyed cold waters subs and dotmod's surface action. Would they be retaining the functionality of submarines from cold waters so we can choose to play either? Unlike cold waters lone wolf gameplay, I can foresee micromanaging a fleet might take some fun out of the action if AI or automation isn't well implemented.

I can't believe what I'm hearing.Did devs really mentioned Iran-Iraq war? I'm sure they've hited there head somewhere beacuse I rarely hear anyone talk about it(despite being an all aut war with the the involvement of both superpowers). I think if its about sea battles it probably would be about tanker war or operation praying mantis.Thank you very much. I'm gonna keep an eye on this one.

Yeah operation praying mantis was the last time the u.s was involved in a "real" naval battle. Theres a pretty cool documentary on KZbin that has both sides of the battle with an interview of multiple sailors on the Iranian warship sunk that day.

My biggest question is will these be huge realistic maps? such as can ships attack each other from 100s of miles away with missiles or is it going to be some unrealistic scenario where ships are 2 miles away spamming missiles at each other?

Cold Waters feels like a sim arcade; coming from dangerous waters, I never felt like I got the sim experience I was hoping for from the game. Granted, I like War on the Sea, so this may surprise me. I tend to wait for reviews from this company.

It would be good if they allowed damage control to be a factor or even a playable part of the game. The USS Stark was saved from sinking after two Exocet hits because of excellent damage control by her crew. The Moskva was lost because of poor damage control. Having been on multiple ships in the 1980s, and three deployments, and having worked on the Outer Air Battle extensively, I would love to see a realistic Backfire/CVBG engagement with F-14s, SAMs and EW accurately portrayed. Will they model SS-N-12 salvoes correctly? Lots of questions. I really want this game!

This for sure has massive potential. I realize its in Alpha however, The grafix look quite outdated to the max, I watched it 3 times and you can pick things out quite easily. Hoping that this will improve to suit modern GPU's. Great review, Thanks man.

The damage model needs some more work, that fire on the Russian cruiser, should have left lots of blackened paint work, and there was no damage to the mast and sensors after the missile hit.

they made HighFleet, many asset is from Cold waters. they still use YU-5 asset for ASROC. but one thing for sure, this game is very moddable.

I Hope to see in game Italian ships. Italy during cold war has a very powerful and modern ships. I Hope to see CV Giuseppe Garibaldi, Missilistic cruiser Vittorio Veneto and other ship like Durand de la Penne destroyers! At the same time, It would be great have in game a scenario and a campaign in mediterranium.(PS. You get a new subscribers)
