Microprose isn't really "back" -- it was 'revived' by a dude who used to work for Bohemia (ArmA series) and only really has, unofficially, one of the previous founders from old... So far what I've seen is they're just churning out mostly "meh" stuff...

Silent Hunter games were the most immersive and atmospheric sims I ever played. I never felt U-boat was able to re-create that and managing the tunes on the ship is a chore. I hope MicroProse nails this one.

I like UBOAT, I feel like the game manages quite a lot of the things itself (maybe im playing medium-low managing difficulty?) but I definitely feel UBOAT beats the hell out of whatever the crap we call Silent Hunter 5 (or even Silent Hunter Online) - Ubi ruined those games.. SH3-4 are ofc AMAZING

@@slandshark It was such an awesome game for its time. My dad would only play war simulators and it was a bit advanced for me at that age so we would play together for hours. I'd be identifying all of the ships with the game manual and helping him hit certain hotkeys during combat, we had a blast with it. Once I was old enough to play on my own we then got competitive with it, seeing who could get the best tonnage each night. Would absolutely love to find another game like it that isn't super overly complicated or reliant on multiplayer.

Loved the Silent Hunter series. SH4 had a nice tin presentation with sewn badges photos etc. graphic were very much of the time. It was the atmosphere though, hearing the deep rhythmic pounding of a destroyers’ engines as it passed over you, you waited for the splash of a depth charge. Really got the blood pumping

Many PC sim games were so much more demanding of the player than modern versions of the same. I can't say if that's because PC users in the past were generally OLDER or modern audiences lack patience for the same experience. With Souls-like games making noise I thought perhaps the youth wanted to return to real challenge but that's the exception - not the rule.

I would love more pacific submarine combat. I feel like there is definitely a lot less pacific theaters in games because most of them focus on the western front and eastern. Hopefully this turns out to be a pretty good game and gets continued development because a modern pacific sub game would be awesome, no downloading old mods and such. I always enjoyed the Silent Hunter series but being so old, downloading the mods and having it work with a more modern computer is very annoying.

What really excites me is seeing views from the Japanese subs. I don't know any sub sims that give a Japanese perspective. I mean, there's War on the Sea, but that's painfully slow paced for one, and for another it's not a pure sub sim. I want something like UBOAT where I can walk around the inside!

I just would love to see a submarine sim game that has a “DCS-like” style of details and immersion. It should be as much close to real life as possible. It should have dynamic cross section and real sonar simulation with sound waves being actually calculated (similar to ray tracing).

@@theShermanator for now I can say for sure that cold waters have a kind of dynamic sound cross section. Don’t how how is calculated (probably hard coded values based on aspect+distance) but is still better than nothing. Staying head on an active pinging sonar will drop the enemy detection on cold waters compared to getting pinged from the side. Anyway if we can do ray tracing we should be able to do “sound tracing” applying the exact same technology and adjusting some values for the sound (like speed ecc)

I’m a very occasional, even rare RTS player but I love submarine sims. I recently started playing uboat which I have been loving. The last sub game I played before Uboat was Silent Service - the original - on my Commodore 64. It had such a deep impact on me I really took to uboat. I do love its complexity and detail but I will look forward also to the more simple silent depth 2 once it leaves early access.

U boat actually messed up the darkness and spotting range it's all over the place It shouldn't be pitch black at night as it's not so dark in real life unless it's a heavy storm. Will be interesting to see how they do this. Also it should be easier than the German Uboat games as the Americans were fighting a far easier navy than the germans vs the Royal Navy who were the peak of navy tech and most powerful in ww2.

Interesting. It seems like Microprose is making a bit of a comeback lately. Between this and the various B17 games they are working on, for example. It'll be interesting to follow this one. I do wonder if it will meet or exceed the benchmark set by the likes of 'UBoat' though.

I have a feeling its going to be pretty arcade. Nothing can really compete with the Silent Hunter series at this point. UBOAT wishes it could, but they never envisioned it like that from the start, they relied on mods and the community at first, and now they're finally jumping into it, but its too little, too late IMO.

I've been considering picking up Silent Hunter 4, but have been a bit hesitant cause I am not sure how easy it is to learn to play. This might be a good entry point into subsims, but to be honest, Silent Hunter 4 still looks pretty good despite its age, and its current (sale) price of $2.49 on Steam is really tempting.

I just like to remind everyone 1945, February 6 - Royal Navy submarine Venturer becomes the only submarine to sink another submarine while they were both submerged when she sinks U-864 off Norway. Imagine a submarine game where youre commander or a low level officer and you learn everything about commanding a submarine... and you can ask any question and all of it is driven by actual AI you can talk to and they respond... all in VR. And then at some point you become commander of the submarine and you can give orders with your voice and the crew does it... things like that. Thatd be the most amazing experience ever... you would truly be in a ww2 or modern submarine and actual learn stuff... AI would be useful...

The entire Pacific Ocean? I wonder if that means you can sail out of San Diego Harbor, 1942, under escort of an old WWI destroyer about 15-20 miles and then on your own, treating every air/surface/sonar contact as potentially hostile…goal: never be detected!? Navigate by dead reckoning and celestial navigation all the way to Pearl Harbor, radio homing on a simulation of a vintage radio station the last 100 miles or so. That could take 10 days, running at 10 knots on the surface 24hours/day, with lookouts watching the skies all the time…hopefully it has radar modeled…realistically! …not just “canned” dots with a “pre-drawn” sweep. …actual radar beam propagation simulation. And high-resolution, real-life-like binocular views (VR would be cool). But I doubt it. And then deploy on a 30-day patrol out of Pearl. Obviously, no one is going to sit at their computer, day and night for 30 days, so hopefully you can set course and speed and then time compress to the edge of an event area. Something like, “Skipper! Radar contact!” But have that continuity of the entire patrol. Not just random events and not entirely scripted. So, you could navigate wrong and miss the action. If you’ve watched the 1957 movie, “Enemy Below”, you know it can be hours and hours, even days, of intermittently tracking a radar contact at the edge of detection range, always being mindful of position, submarine, systems, crew and supplies and fuel. Very boring to 99% of players. But maybe not if the simulation of the submarine (or destroyer) is realistic and immersive enough…sights and sounds (rumble and roar of the FM diesels, sounds of air blowers and fans, etc)…even recipes of what the cook is preparing in the mess. Maybe event some card game simulation to fill the boredom and give more immersion. Then one could add a kerosene-dampened cloth to (subtlety) add the smell! 😄

Well, I played a lot of Silent Hunter, and it worked like this, partially - you kind of can make that game as hard or as easy as you want, but yeah, that game has a 1x timer all the way to a like x8194 timer, meaning that, realistically you could sail across from LA to Tokyo in either real time or at up to ~8000x the time it would take :) - hopefully this is similar

So effing tired with WWII sub and tank sims already. Has the Cold War never happened or something? Should we still be left to beat the dead horse (DW, even with mods)?

@@theShermanator Well, apart from Dangerous Waters with mods, what else can you (still) play this moment if you want a more or less realistic Cold War experience? Cold Waters is a bit... hard to call a sim. And when we are talking WWII sub sims, the amount is almost as large as the amount of first person shooters set in the same period.

Not interested, I can‘t see the WW2 setting anymore. Why can‘t we get a new sub sim in the early to late Cold War scenario ? That would be far more interesting, especially the leap of technology in that era.

Great to see something new but I'm afraid this is going to be another "light Sim"... The trailed doesn't show any actual workings, no map, no calculations (I'd love a destroyer-style DRT), 'no TDC, and the periscope view is completely off with a German style reticle...

Silent depth 2 is already sinking. It’s absolutely 100% arcade. Microprose will go back into bankruptcy they keep releasing games like this. The mighty 8th redux is just as ass.

Unfortunately this game is complete trash... very disappointing. I understand it's still in Early Access but Microsoft completely bombed with this and don't think they will recover from this atrocity. Please read Steam reviews

Sea foam and waves - as the main visual feature: leaves a lot to be improved. Visually... it looks like some 2008/2012 release, rather than 2024 visual ocean surface. Just hope it will not end up - as SH5: moders community should "save the project"... ( In the presentation... stormy weather and clear sunny reflections - are avoided... it looks like some lake in Scotland... rather than tropical ocean... )

Fuckin Steam, I got so many naval and sub games, yet they only promote Manga and Fortnite shit to me. Wish I could list for developers/ publishers like Hooded Horse, Mircoprose or Slitherine and totally block Ubisoft (thx for SH5) and EA and the likes.. Thanks for bringing this up.

Very but always every game is American subs American airplanes only recently historically accurate other side gameplay became available. Heck even war thunder has a huge backlash 5 years ago over purposefully nerfing Russian tech tree and now we know why. Not interested in the American gameplay. That's all.

Well, UBOAT is a GREAT game! Also, Silent Hunter 3 and 4 with the UBOAT DLC shows a non US version of events. A British or Japanese or Italian submarine thing would be awesome but probably wont happen.
